Victoria Mboko completed her Montreal miracle with a 26 64 61 triumph over her tennis hero Naomi Osaka.
The 18 year old was stunning for two weeks with her silky smooth powerhouse game and without a doubt well on her way to more sensational achievements in the years to come.
Mboko settled down after a mediocre start, with the crowd energy fueling her comeback. Once again, the mentally fragile Japanese veteran seemed oversensitive and unable to cope with audience favoring her challenger. Mboko rolled through an easy third set in which Osaka seemed to subconsciously surrender.
Osaka was devastated by her latest agonizing loss, so close to the big title that has evaded her since 2022. The distraught former no. 1 and four time Grand Slam champion gave a short speech which neglected to mention the new champion. “I don’t really wanna take up too much time. I’ll just say thank you to everyone. Thank you to my team, the ball kids, organizers, and volunteers. I hope you guys had a good night.”
Starting the year ranked 333, Mboko has skyrocketed to no. 25 in the world and she has won 53 matches since January with six titles including this WTA 1000. Her total prize money in 2025… $1.14m.
