Xinran Sun Makes Huge Statement In Beijing

About a decade ago, former Australian Grand Slam champion Peter McNamara told me at US Open that the pool of junior tennis talent in China, where he was working as a developmental coach, was astounding. McNamara stated with full certainty that it was just a matter of time before China became a tennis super power and potentially would dominate tennis.

When a serious tennis guru like McNamara spoke, you listen and his words convinced me.

McNamara said the female juniors had the better competitive mindset than the boys because boys are more valued in Chinese culture so the girls have an extra motivation and determination. But the overall tennis talent being developed in China was stunning to him.

While we have seen several super talents emerge from China, like Li Na, Jerry Shang, Yibing Wu, Peng Shuai, Qiang Wang, Xinyu Wang, Zheng Shuai, Qinwen Zheng, so far only Li Na fulfilled the McNamara prophecy by winning French Open and Australian Open in singles.

But now a young, new Chinese talent has emerged as an outstanding prospect. The 16 year old Xinran Sun totally dominated Eva Lys in Beijing 61 30 in her WTA Tour Level debut and showed all the qualities and attributes to be a great one. She was pinpoint perfect from the baseline, dictating the veteran from Germany all around the court. Also she has the laser focus and fist pump intensity which indicates she wants to be the best and she believes she can be the best. If you saw her play today you know you saw something special in the making.

Sun speaks with a certainty, confidence and force that is unusual, particularly with a young adult. “I take my mentally stronger and stronger. 0-3 or 1-4, I think I can come back. I always be strong like Qinwen Zheng. I’m her fan. She’s amazing. Both matches 0-5 (at 2026 US Open), I always believe she can come back because I know her mental is strong. I really want to be player liker her.”

Sources tell me Sun, who is sponsored by adidas clothes and shoes and Wilson racquets, has played in three junior Grand Slam finals already – she won girls US Open last month – and she has spent time training in Serbia with her top inspiration Novak Djokovic.

Source: “She moved to Serbia for tennis training since she’s ten, I saw she sat on the side of the court when Novak was practicing and preparing for Shanghai Masters 2024, in Belgrade. That’s also her base. Her play style copies Novak, very smart on shot selection and patient in long rallies.”

I first sun Sun play on a You Tube video a couple of years ago at Les Petites in France and she beat Michael Chang’s daughter easily. She is a tennis machine.

I saw Sun do an interview on Tennis Channel podium after winning US Open and she is a very strong young woman, fearless, bold, confident, well spoken and not intimidated at all by the bright lights of the media. She was born to be a superstar. And she is well on her way.

Postscript: Sun followed up the win with another over 27 seed Bucsa 75 64. Another electric win, crowd in hysteria, initially Sun’s reaction was pure joy then a bow to Bucsa at the handshake, as fans were in delirium she went out raised her arms in triumph then quickly composed and marched to her chair. She is not satisfied with these two wins, more work to do. All the signs are there, this girl is the real deal and not just another fly by night Raducanu or Lys.
