Billie Jean King’s brainchild World Team Tennis is coming back after a half decade hiatus.
After five years of dormancy (2021 was the last season), World Team Tennis has new ownership and is preparing for a 2026 season to kick off this December. WTT announced there will be three city-based teams, based in New York, Miami and Toronto and there will be a six-event schedule. Brooklyn’s Barclays Center; Sunrise, Fla.’s Amerant Bank Arena; and Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum have been selected to stage the competitions. There will be additional dates other than the season opener re-launch on December 2 (at Barclays Center) – to be announced – and each team will play two home and two away matches.
WTT has picked a new league CEO – Stephen Amritraj.
Player to compete in the 2026 season have not been named yet but one commitment has been obtained from WTA world no. 3 Jess Pegula. The services of Nick Kyrgios would be a very logical acquisition for WTT which apparently has no involvement with founder King.
The once popular league which formed in the 1970s and has featured Chris Evert, Andre Agassi, Martina Hingis, Pete Sampras, Mats Wilander, Vitas Gerulaitis, Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Leander Paes, Serena Williams, Venus Williams will also present a new competition format. Teams will contest five sets with no-ad scoring – starting by alternating men’s and women’s singles for each of the first four, followed by a fifth-set mixed doubles tiebreaker, so eight total players will be competing per match.
