When Batistuta Met Djokovic

Argentina’s soccer legend Gabriel Batistuta recently was in Serbia and made a point to visit the Novak Djokovic Tennis Center in Belgrade. Even better, Batistuta was fortunate to meet the man himself.

Regarded as one of the greatest strikers in soccer history, the 2004 FIFA World Player of the Year was thrilled to meet Djokovic. “Thank you Nole for this meeting at your training center,” Batistuta said in an Instagram post. “A fun moment with a lot of anecdotes and experiences. Soon we’ll see each other again.”

Djokovic replied with a comment on the Batistuta post: “Thanks for the visit Gabriel. I’m very happy to find you in our country and my center. Serbia loves you very much.

At international level, Batistuta was the all-time leading goal scorer for Argentina with 54 goals in 77 official matches – a record he held until June 21, 2016, when Lionel Messi broke his record. Batistuta competed in three FIFA World Cups, scoring ten goals. This made Batistuta Argentina’s joint all-time top scorer in the competition, and the joint 8th highest World Cup goal scorer of all time.  Batistuta is also the only player in soccer history to score two hat-tricks in different World Cups.
