Why Is Carlos Moya Not In The Hall of Fame?

Carlos Moya was ATP World No. 1 in 1999, he won the French Open (1998) and Davis Cup. Moya won twenty ATP World Tour singles titles overall.
Moya’s last major appearance was losing in the first round at the 2009 Australian Open. The five year period has lapsed but Moya has still not been nominated for the Newport Hall of Fame election ballot.
Moya’s credentials and accomplishments compare or exceed inducted Hall of Famers like Michael Chang, Andy Roddick and Gabriela Sabatini, among others.
Is it just an oversight – or is there some sort of subconscious bias against clay court titans, particularly Spanish Grand Slam champions? Juan Carlos Ferrero (one Roland Garros title, No. 1 in the world), Sergi Bruguera (two Roland Garros titles) and Alberto Costa (one Roland Garros title) have not yet been nominated to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot.
Carlos Moya was a super champion and a credit to tennis. Richard Krajicek, the 1996 Wimbledon champ said this about the exceptional sportsmanship of Costa and especially Moya: “In general, he’s very disciplined. That’s also what I saw with Costa, Alberto Costa, he’s also very mature for his age. Even now, sometimes I go crazy on the court. Then you could see my emotions much better. These guys are unbelievable. I don’t know about Costa, but Moya I’ve seen before. He’s a very fair player. When I look at him, he says the ball is wide, I really believe him. Very fair. He would never, no matter what the score is, would never take a point. The way he behaves on the court, I think that is a very big plus for the Spanish, those two. I don’t know about the other ones very well. But, those two, I really see how well they are on the court. That’s a very big plus for them.”
Carlos Moya deserves to be honored with a Hall of Fame ballot nomination.

Caro really is the greatest player ever not to win a major. It has to happen soon but I keep saying that.
All this means is that Serena will be back on top where she belongs after she wins the Aussie Open.
Serena = Fed. Start and end any discussion there.
Fed slyly pulls out of Paris to protect himself. He will win London for sure now.

It does have to happen Duke. And when it does she will be the first Polish born person to win a singles major title. Lukasz Kubot this year became the first Polish player to win a Wimbledon title (doubles).

Oh – I thought Caroline is Danish ? It’s gets very confusing 🙂
Duke – it’s far from a given that Serena will win in Aust. And although Woz played very well in Singapore the GS do not bring out the best in her, for whatever reason. But I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Caroline was born in Denmark, the daughter of Polish immigrants. She speaks Polish with her father during OCC. But. as Catherine said, she is Danish, and not born in Poland.

Zhuhai – good chance to estimate Sloane’s progress. And Coco ‘s attitude after a break. Kerber is playing but her trip to China may be short – she’s drawn with her old adversary Pav and Ash Barty. If she has to lose I hope she loses well – ‘fail better’.

Wozniacki was only born in Denmark because her parents lived there for her father's pro soccer career. I know a woman from Denmark who played with Caro when she was a teen. She was older than Caro but Caro was extraordinary.

Wozniacki doesn't have what it takes to win a slam. This Singapore court was tailor made for her retriever game as it was so slow it gave her tons of time to run everything down. None of the other courts on tour at the slams play anything close to this so her 90% defensive game won't be enough. Good on her for capitalizing on winning at Singapore though. Would've been a big surprise if she lost to Venus on that slow court.

Caroline has Danish nationality and represents Denmark in the Olympics. I think she actually lives in New York.
But where you live doesn’t matter – Raonic, Pliskova, Djokovic, Kvitova all live in Monaco or have places there. Lots of others probably. And Angie as we know lives in Poland.

Onto another topic, why is tennis evolving into a niche sport in the U.S. We have seen that many tournaments have disappeared from the States and it is less accessible to watch on TV unlike 15-20 years ago. Please don’t tell me it’s because U.S. players are not champions because I do not believe that is the reason.
The U.S. sporting public simply seems to have lost interest in tennis. What is a shame is I believe this is the most grueling sport, mentally and physically. The players have never been better athletes than this era yet no appreciation in a sports-loving place like the U.S. It baffles me.

Caroline’s official residence is Monte Carlo. So many tennis players take advantage of the tax haven that there probably could be a tennis tourney made up just of its residents. 🙂

When ESPN puts you on tape delay, or outright doesn’t even broadcast big tournaments in Aug, for the Little League World Series, the Sport is in deep doo doo..
ESPN has bailed on Tennis pretty much, seems like they are on the end of any deal they had. They started bailing out of Majors they had rights to,dumping matches on TC.
Judging by Public Court use in NYC, Tennis is way down. They even lowered the price on permits, and they never lower prices on anything. You do see a lot of immigrant parents pushing their kids to be tennis players.
Harry and Johnson flame out of Paris. Johnson, understandably having a rough second half of the year, but Harry loses to a LL, bad loss..

I would be interested to hear what other American posters on this site think about Duke’s question on why tennis has lost popularity in the US.
I can talk about what has happened in Canada. Tennis did not have much of a profile in Canada until Roanic appeared on the scene. Whatever happens in the rest of his career, Tennis Canada has to be very grateful to him for increasing awareness. Suddenly we had better TV coverage and more mention of tennis in the media. Both Bouchard and Pospisil helped continue the interest.
And now of course the youngster Shapovalov is raising awareness even more. The TV audience for his matches in Montreal this summer was huge. Denis has that “x” factor that gets people excited about him. He has said that one of his goals is to get more Canadian kids interested in tennis in this hockey-mad country.
Tennis Canada has been working hard for several years to increase the number of people playing tennis. And, despite our long winters, has had some success. Someone like Denis should have a real impact on interesting more people in actually playing.
So here having a few good players has made a big difference. We don’t have the long, rich tradition of top players that the US has enjoyed, so these players had an impact. I hope with young players like Auger-Aliassime and Andreescu in the wings the trend will continue.
