stanw
By Scoop Malinowski

Status: 2014 Australian Open champion, 2015 Roland Garros champion.

DOB: March 28, 1985 in Lausanne, Switzerland

Tennis Inspiration: “I like to see Sampras play.”

Last Book Read: “I don’t really like to read books but mostly I read the magazines.”

First Tennis Memory: “Of course I think my first good memory was the French Open junior (2003 d. Brian Baker).”

Favorite Sport(s) Outside Tennis: “I like to watch soccer and the ice hockey too because in Switzerland it’s very good.”

First Car: “A Kia (blue).”

Current Car: “Audi.”

Favorite Meal: “Depends, I eat sushi a lot, it’s easy.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Yes, vanilla.”

Pre-Match Feeling: “Just before to come on the court a little bit nervous, of course. But I enjoy this moment.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “Winning the Australian Open, for sure. And the Olympic Games (doubles gold medal with Roger Federer in 2008).”

Most Painful Moment: “That was when we lost in Davis Cup to USA. 2012.”

Favorite Tournament: “Australian Open. French Open.”

Funniest Players Encountered: “I think, because he’s a good friend, Benoit Paire is quite funny, quite strange on the court. And quite a good person off the court.”

Toughest Competitor Encountered: “Nadal.”

Embarrassing Memory: “Not really, I don’t have really.”

Why Do You Love Playing Tennis: “It’s special. It’s a game. You play game, you play with a ball, you play against someone, you’re alone on the court. You need to find solutions every day, every match because every match is different.”

Favorite Players To Watch: “David Nalbandian. (Why him?) Because he’s playing so easy. You think he’s playing not full and he’s just playing with his touch and with his talent. I like to watch him. Andy Murray. Roger Federer, of course.”

One Of Your Best Matches: “Against Nalbandian in Barcelona (2008). I won 6-3 6-1 but I was playing unbelievable.”

Stangest Match: “I didn’t have any crazy match…I remember one match for sure, against Djokovic this year. Amazing match, playing five hours.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “I don’t know the word in English – when you stick together with the… [loyalty?] Yes loyalty. You stay with the person but you never go off.”

Nice one Scoop. When was this taken — perhaps middle of last year?

One suggestion: I think you should include the word “interview” somewhere on the website (perhaps in the Mission statement on the side — or in the keywords section of the HTML page), since I have noticed your biofiles do not come in Google search results when somebody is searching for “interview” and player name.

Thanks Gaurang. Yes I did this with Stan at US Open last year after his second round win.

Nice read. Stan’s never been embarrassed? Bet he ate a triple bagel against someone once that was embarrassing. BTW there’s a typo he was born March 28, 1985 not 1975.
