Speaking of rivalries…

ivo
The Ivo Karlovic vs Tommy Robredo rivalry resumes this week in Barcelona where the 35 year old Spaniard was granted a wildcard.

Robredo has locked horns with the 39 year old Dr. Ivo three times and lost all three in close matches. First time was in 2004 in Rome 76 64. Then two years later in Las Vegas, with an identical score.

The third clash was in 2008 Hamburg on clay with Ivo again prevailing 36 62 76.

Will the Barcelona fourth showdown be the charm for Tommy, who is ranked 202 to Ivo’s 76?

Robredo has won 12 career singles titles to Ivo’s eight.

Nice win for Rubin over no. 1 seed in Talahassee, Kudla, 3 and 2. Going down to Futures might’ve been move to kickstart Rubin’s season.

Our friend, Brydan Klein, has had it very tough as late as his ranking at age 28 has sorely dipped to no. 413. Just goes to show you how hard it is out on the pro tour to keep a good ranking.

Going back to Sloane and tanking – I think you could say Kvitova didn’t give 100% v Kerber because she’d left it all on the court in the Fed Cup where she gets inspired and Angie gets buried. But Petra didn’t show that, she just kept on playing and stayed in the match to the end.

Sloane should learn from Kvitova – first, how not to insult your opponent.

I also did a photo shoot for Elle Romania…uhoh…☺

Why don’t we just forget about the tennis and have a competition for whoever’s done best fashion shoot ?

(consolation prizes for those who’ve never been asked)

Wonder if these fashion magazines seek the players – or do the player’s teams practically beg these magazines to feature these players?

    Scoop
I think if the players are photogenic and are high ranked, or icons in their countries, or all of those things, their PRs canvass the top glossies if they aren’t approached first, and say the players are available.

Kerber was on the cover of German Grazia at the end of 2016, but this year only made the cover of a mag called ’emotion’, some pop psych thing I suppose. Petra routinely makes covers at the end of the year, Muguruza I suspect gets a bit of pushing because she’s not No 1 now and is in danger of over-exposure.

If you’ve got a copy of Mewshaw’s book, read about Sabatini’s experience with Vogue. Telling.

CoCo ousts Siegemund in Stuttgart, leaving Angie the only German left standing, and Garcia (henceforth known as ‘the squeaker’) gets through 7/5 in 3rd v Kostyuk.

I certainly hope Marta isn’t being groomed as the ‘new Sharapova’.

Kerber retires v Kontaveit – leg injury. Stuttgart not a happy place for her this year.

At Stuttgart – 3 retirements this afternoon – last one, Muguruza retires v Pavs. What is going on with the WTA ? Porsche will be asking for their money back.

Vekic beats Tomjanivic, in the battle of their boyfriends hate each other. Handshake might have been must see

  • catherine · April 26, 2018 at 4:03 pm

I’m going to be nasty and suggest Muguruza must have pulled a muscle doing all those poses for Vogue. Honestly, when did she last finish a match ?

And Angie probably strained her thigh prancing around for the Porsche promotional magazine.

So what’s awaiting Halep, Elle’s cover girl ?
Retirement on the grounds of over-exposure ?

Jo Blow – Tomjanivic and Vekic are best friends 🙂

I guess that’s how Kyrgios knew about Kokanokis

Catherine, I read that book by Mewshaw but I don’t remember that part. Can you nutshell it? Pretty good book, enjoyed it. Mewshaw was definitely trying to get some sex and sizzle into that book but it was more of a tease without any shocking revelations such as some of the insider talk I have heard which is downright astonishing stuff.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 26, 2018 at 7:38 pm

The site sure is taking a gossipy bent this week 🙂 Well I guess it’s better than political yapping 🙂

Basically, the Mewshaw story is about US Vogue deciding to do a photoshoot of Gabriela wearing various fashion outfits and the runaround which accompanied the whole project – all absolutely true to life from my knowledge of that world (not extensive but enough)- and then in the end the Great Goddess Anna Wintour looked at the contacts and nixed the whole thing because she thought Gabriela photographed as too ‘athletic’ and maybe not sufficiently anorexic. Read into that what you like.

I was being a bit jokey about things in Stuttgart but actually I think 3 retirements in one afternoon is not funny at all but you won’t find any discussion of that on the WTA site. Wheels are coming off in some areas of the women’s game. Too much off court stuff.

Barbara Rittner must be tearing her hair out. Not only did Germany meekly succumb in Fed Cup but not one German got past the 2nd round in S’gart. Goodbye to the Golden Generation. Like Italians.

I wouldn’t believe a lot of that ‘insider’ stuff you hear – most of it’s about as accurate as the story we discussed earlier here regarding a very famous player.
Only a few weeks ago I heard it again. It’s rubbish.

That’s a shame the fashion world is that shallow. That’s really terrible. Sabatini should never have endured that. What a wacky world. A model once told me her roommate would open a can of tuna and leave it out a day then eat it to get food poisoning so she would lose weight.

  • catherine · April 27, 2018 at 7:55 am

The fashion world is famously shallow. I’ve seen, and used, some great photos of Sabatini so maybe the Vogue photog didn’t understand his brief or Anna Wintour couldn’t see very well through her sunglasses.

I’ve heard a number of repulsive stories about models and their weight but I’ll spare T-P readers’ feelings and not repeat them.

One of the reasons Gabriela retired was to get away from the spotlight, I’ve always believed.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 27, 2018 at 8:50 am

Agree Catherine, Sabatini never seemed comfortable in the spotlight, she’s more or a private, introverted person and she struggled with English. But she had great character. Monica Seles was very and forever touched by the sympathy and class gestures Sabatini made to her after the stabbing. She was the only player to vote for Monica to retain her no. 1 ranking which really made all the other players look like cutthroats with no consideration or empathy. Sabatini had it and Seles respected it very much. She still mentions it.
