Shapovalov’s Reddit AMA

Denis Shapovalov took time out to do an “Ask Me Anything” interview with tennis fans on Reddit. Here are some of the best excerpts from the 19 year old Canadian who is currently ranked 25 in the ATP and looming large in the Indian Wells round of 16 where he will meet Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz…

What is the oddest match you played?

I remember playing Tennys Sandgren in the finals of a futures. It was so windy and we were both kinda complaining the whole time. At one point it felt like something was happening every point – umbrellas on the court, sirens going off, chairs flying around.

Comments on the success of Andreescu and Felix?

Both are amazing – but it’s not a shocker to me that they’re doing so well. I’ve grown up with them so I know how good they are and how bright their future is.

Favorite players to watch, male and female?

Roger on the men’s side. Halep and Osaka on the women’s side.

Which major would you like to win most?

Honestly, any Slam would be a dream come true.

Favorite memory at a Grand Slam?

Playing on Arthur Ashe Arena against Jo (Tsonga). Playing one of the best matches of my life (won 64 64 76 in 2017).

Best and most unqiue Experience you’ve had due to your tennis career?

I think meeting Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky – two of my biggest idols.

How much did it mean to you to beat Rafa Nadal in Montreal (2017)?

It meant a lot to me. It was a big jump start to my career. That whole week was a life changing week for me. So definitely one to remember.

Looking at your age and ranking you are obviously considered to be a future elite player (slam winner, number 1), but do you ever think of the careers of other players that have been in a similar position in the last couple of years but didn’t quite live up to the hype (Gasquet, Dimitrov, Tomic) and worry about it?

No I’m not worried at all. Every player goes through different paths. So I’m gonna go through my own path.

Most nervous you’ve ever been in a tennis match?

That’s tough. I think the most nervous I’ve ever got is playing against Jo (Tsonga), serving for the match in the fifth in Australia (lost in 2R 2018 36 63 16 76 75).

Can you tell us about your workout routine? What exercises are helpful in injury prevention? What exercises help to get the flexibility required?

I do a lot of core and shoulder exercises to make sure my posture stays good.
