Roland Garros Talk: Is Serena Breaking The Rules?

serena

WTA player Arina Rodionova asked a very good question on Twitter.

Nothing against Serena’s outfit, looks pretty cool actually. But just wondering how is that allowed by the rules if we are only allowed to wear legging until the middle of the calf the longest, and ALWAYS have to wear skirt/shorts on top of the leggings. Were there any rules changes?

If there were no rules changes, why is Serena getting special privileges? Her catsuit leotard looks more appropriate for a yoga or ballet class, not a Grand Slam major.

Serena says she is wearing the catsuit style for medical reasons, to do with her blood-clotting condition, so I assume she would get an exemption for that.

I imagine she is on blood thinning medication permanently – don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

  • Scoop Malinowski · May 31, 2018 at 8:15 am

Oh, it’s another TUE (therapeutic use exemption), those sure do come in handy ๐Ÿ™‚ Wonder if WTA no. 89 would get the same privileges?

  • catherine · May 31, 2018 at 8:37 am

Don’t think it’s the same as a TUE exactly, and I can’t imagine many players wanting to sport that outfit – but it’s true Serena does spontaneously develop blood clots, which could easily have killed her by now so she’d want to take preventative measures. Don’t see it gives her any advantage actually.

In other events she’s worn a dress/skirt, but with her arms and legs covered.

  • Duke Carnoustie · May 31, 2018 at 12:26 pm

This guy Serena married sure is an odd one. But he’s rich and that was clearly her No. 1 criteria. I really don’t see this marriage lasting once he gets to know her and her eccentricities better.

I’m with Scoop on this TUE. I thought Serena was being treated unfairly all the time – yet she gets to use the most TUEs. Ridiculous.

Also anyone else sick of Caro as much as me?

  • Duke Carnoustie · May 31, 2018 at 12:34 pm

The great Gojo fined for “tanking” his first-rounder

    https://www.ubitennis.net/2018/05/peter-gojowczyk-fined-e25000-poor-performance-french-open/

One great thing about women’s tennis is no one can be proven to tank a best-of-3 match. Or do the ladies just not do it? Maybe they are better thespians than the men.

One way to avoid these fines is to smash a racket or two, like Coco today. No one suspects you are tanking if you break your equipment. Let’s hope the players read this site.

  • catherine · May 31, 2018 at 12:38 pm

Still, how does Serena’s outfit at RG give her an advantage ? Can’t work that one out.

  • catherine · May 31, 2018 at 12:45 pm

Duke – CoCo always smashes a racquet or two, she doesn’t have to tank either – by a third set she’s usually worn out.

Yes, you can tank a 3 set match. I’ve seen quite a few women’s matches where the 3rd was a joke. But maybe people expect women to fold up like that ๐Ÿ™‚

On this topic I always refer to the famous Wimbledon final tank.

I doubt players read T-P. I doubt they read anything much on tennis apart from Twitter.
Except Johanna Konta. She obviously reads her reviews.

  • Scoop Malinowski · May 31, 2018 at 1:58 pm

Zopp popped out Bemelmans 64 in the fifth again. Nadal brutalizes poor Pella with a thorough beatdown. Coric quietly taking care of business as is Gasquet.

  • catherine · May 31, 2018 at 3:40 pm

Serena bts Barty – as I predicted. But in 3 sets and looked like a good match.
(the outfit Serena wears is designed to help circulation and prevent blood clots forming. Wouldn’t have any performance enhancing effects.)

3 Germans got through today – Kerber, Georges and Petko. Angie may go furthest. I notice she isn’t wearing the clothes she modelled in adidas’ photoshoot for RG. Neither was Ostapenko – the stuff she wore in the promotion was awful.)

Angie’s serve might be a problem. 5 dfs in her match.

  • Scoop Malinowski · May 31, 2018 at 3:47 pm

Catherine, the outfit is performance enhancing because it is so tight it cuts the wind resistance friction that looser fitting attire would create. ๐Ÿ™‚ Lawsuits could be reasonably submitted against Serena and against RG organizers. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • catherine · May 31, 2018 at 3:59 pm

Well, it’s up to designers to create styles which reduce wind resistance to the minimum without players needing to climb into a catsuit. They’re probably already working on it ๐Ÿ™‚

Those lawyers aren’t going to get rich on this.

Serena served 9 aces, 4 dfs. Quite a few UEs.

(For the first time in a long while Julia G served no aces at all.)

  • catherine · May 31, 2018 at 4:09 pm

Style wise – I’m wrong Kerber is wearing the new adidas stuff (it’s a bit fussy) but because the highlights are so bad I didn’t spot it. Eg You get 2mins from a 2 1/2 hour match. Might as well not have them. People are complaining.

  • Scoop Malinowski · May 31, 2018 at 7:11 pm

Shapovalov with another bad loss – to Marterer. The same Marterer who Sandgren beat in Melbourne. Maybe this Marterer guy is breaking out this year.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 2:35 am

Three Germans will play next round and all will lose – Petko to Halep, Kerber to Bertens and Georges to Serena.

Julia’s sudden loss of ace power will hurt her and she’ll be outrun and outthought tactically. Serena’s bandwagon is rolling. She’s already in the final. Her fans are having hysterics.

I would like my predictions to be wrong but they won’t be.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 2:43 am

Hartt – if you are around, what did you think of Denis’ play ? His attitude seems quite positive, in what he said post-match.

I’m having a bad time at this RG – can’t find (free) streaming and useless highlights. Flashscore are good for stats though.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 2:52 am

400 Youtube comments on Serena’s highlights by early this morning. The WTA probably want her to go on playing until she’s 50. Of course a lot of the comments weren’t about Serena’s tennis skills but a hit is a hit and most women get no more than 60 or so and some get none at all.

    Sharapova gets second to Serena.

  • dan markowitz · June 1, 2018 at 4:12 am

I don’t see how Serena’s outfit helps her and I think it’d be ridiculous for anyone to file a lawsuit about it. Give Serena credit. Barty came out swinging from the heels, but Serena took her down. What she’s doing is amazing and frankly her match today I found more compelling than either the Nadal blowout or the Izzie servefest against Zeballos.

Got to hand it to Kevin Anderson, he’s making a nice late-career surge after a spree of injuries, and he took down the tough Cuevas today. Nishikori v Paire was the only five-setter with Kei coming back from two sets to one to notch the final two sets.

  • dan markowitz · June 1, 2018 at 4:30 am

I like that Serena’s getting her groove on. Her statement of: I’m not yet at peak form, but I feel now that I can get there, should give pause to all the rather mediocre female players out there. What is it, the last six slams have all gone to different players on the women’s side which means while Serena was away from winning slams, no one really stepped up.

I don’t know Serena’s hubby, but I hear from people watching the HBO show on Serena that he’s really a great guy who loves Serena with a passion.

Didn’t Anne White wear the same outfit basically that Serena’s wearing at Wimbledon like 20 years ago?

Am I really writing about women’s tennis!?

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 5:39 am

Dan – I think Scoop was joking ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes – Anne White did wear a similar outfit at W’don, I saw her, but the reason was the cold or something like that. Can’t remember if she had to change – she may not have won her match anyway.

Barty didn’t have the confidence or the experience maybe to lift her game when it mattered – she’s had a fairly poor year in singles. Might end up a better doubles player.

I think you’ll find the same in men’s tennis when Fed/Nadal go. For a while there won’t be a dominating player.

Alex seems a nice guy – contrary to some views expressed, I doubt Serena married him for his money.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 1, 2018 at 9:37 am

Beating Barty is a big win for Serena and her best in 2018, and it could be the kind of win that restores her missing confidence. Serena vs Maria, hopefully it happens this weekend, will be the match of the year in WTA. Don’t forget Maria dropped those personal lines in her book ‘Unstoppable’ about Serena in the locker room crying.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 9:54 am

Exit Svitolina. I’m very surprised – bad for Elina and bad for the tournament. Don’t know if there was any injury problem etc. We’ll find out.

If not, then I’d say this is a setback. I really thought she’d make the final this year.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 9:56 am

Scoop – when you say ‘dropped’ do you mean she included them or didn’t include them ?

  • Hartt · June 1, 2018 at 10:05 am

Catherine, as you can imagine, I was glued to Shapo’s match. He wasn’t at his best, with a poor first serve % and way too many UFEs. With his high risk game, he needs to be “on,” especially against a solid player like Marterer. But I am not too concerned. He has gone from not winning any clay court matches last year, to being quite respectable on the surface. As he said, European players, who grow up on the surface, have a distinct advantage.

But Denis does have a very good attitude. He understands that he is still learning his craft, and his main job right now is to improve as a player, in order to have good results down the road. He was very clear that he wanted to play as many clay tourneys as possible, whatever the results, to gain some much needed experience.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 10:08 am

Buzanescu, who beat Svitolina, has never won a main draw match at a GS before. She’s 30 years old too. Not an upcoming junior.

I hate say it – this kind of result gives women’s tennis a bad name. Kudos to Mihaela but Svitolina is ranked No 4 in the world and she was just blown away. Big hole left in the draw for Madison Keys to walk through.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 1, 2018 at 10:10 am

Catherine, Sharapova put the anecdote in the book. It showed Serena vulnerable. Calculated personal stuff revealed by Maria. Surely Serena will have even extra incentive to bash Maria.

  • Hartt · June 1, 2018 at 10:12 am

Since the discussion about Serena’s husband continued, I have to put in my two cents worth. If anyone married for money it would have to be him, because Serena is far wealthier. But he has enough $, that he doesn’t need to marry for money. By all accounts, he is a genuinely kind person, who not only loves Serena, but has a lot of respect for her. I liked him as soon as I heard he adopted a black cat because they are harder to find homes for. I wonder how his cat and Serena’s dog get along!

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 1, 2018 at 10:15 am

I know it’s early but at this point I wonder if Shapovalov is just one of those super athletes who is physically blessed and can play super tennis? It’s a big step to become a dominant force in the ATP. He set the bar of expectations very high with the early success but let’s face it, his career is stalled right now. Was it too much too soon? Or is a coaching change in order? I know Marterer is good and he showed it in Melbourne, making 3R or 4R and giving a red hot Sandgren a dog fight. But Shap should handle a guy like that, he’s expected to. The can’t miss tag continues to slip off Shap’s shirt. Could he be another Dimitrov or Baghdatis? Such early potential but disappointing results?

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 10:16 am

Thanks Hartt. Denis does impress me with his attitude. He’s not ‘afraid’ of clay and will persevere until he’s got the hang of it.

Glad to see Kasatkina got through, although with a strange scoreline. I hope she can progress. Serena is good to have back, but she’s not going to last forever and the women’s game will suffer unless some new and consistent player starts getting big results.

I’m truly a bit shocked by Elina’s dismissal.

  • Hartt · June 1, 2018 at 10:20 am

The Romanian guy at Match Call Migrants posted a link to a WTA piece about Buzanescu from a few weeks ago. She had such severe problems with injuries that she thought she would have to quit tennis, and was working on her PhD. After unsuccessful knee operations the pain continued. But she played some tennis in Holland, and discovered that suddenly she was pain-free. So she probably would have had a bigger career if it weren’t for the injuries.

That said, I was shocked that Svitolina lost that match. I thought she was a strong contender for the title.

  • Hartt · June 1, 2018 at 10:26 am

In Shapo’s match, he showed his inexperience on clay when he became very upset when they continued to play in steady rain. He kept complaining to the ump, asking if lightning had to strike for play to be stopped. He hated the rain in his eyes, the heavy conditions, especially the heavy balls. Marterer just quietly went about his business.

Shapo was happier once they had new balls, ones that weren’t soaked, and he settled down. After they did have a break the conditions were much better and he was much happier. But that is something he will have to learn – how to play in those conditions.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 10:44 am

Hartt – Denis should’ve been around in the 70s when the courts in Rome looked like a messed up playground and they used Tretorn balls which were unpressurized and when wet must have weighed as much as cannonballs – wood racquets too ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 1, 2018 at 10:59 am

Buzarnescu buzzing Hartt is a big upset. Buzzy never had won a round at a major before this tournament so yes that is a terrible loss for Svitolina. Or maybe Buzzy is our new Younnes El Aynaoui.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 1, 2018 at 11:06 am

Hartt, I can’t buy that excuse. I didn’t see the match but I know these tendencies. Players are struggling so they manufacture an excuse for their losing play. Wally Masur’s famous quote about players lying and fabricating excuses to protect their ego. Nadal used this raining excuse vs Djokovic in Paris a few years ago in the 2014 final. Rafa was in control and ready to win the title then suddenly Djokovic won EIGHT GAMES IN A ROW, to go up a break in the fourth and he had a break point for the second break. Nadal was complaining about the wet conditions and was bullying the chair umpire to stop the match and continue on Monday. Nadal’s badgering won out and the ump stopped the match I think it was deuce and Rafa came out on Monday and broke to get it back on serve and then won the fourth set 6-4 and title. But it was in my opinion calculated excuse making by Nadal. If he had won those eight games in a row and was on the verge of closing out the title, Rafa would have played on and won the title. but because he was losing and in danger he used the rain as his excuse to stop the match and force it to the next day. It was very clever. I think Shapovalov was taking a page out of the Nadal playbook today by blaming the rain.

  • Hartt · June 1, 2018 at 12:40 pm

Scoop, I am afraid I got the matches confused, the one where Shapo complained so much about the weather was the match against Millman, that Denis went on to win.

Generally, Shapo did not make excuses for his loss to Marterer. He acknowledged he did not return well, or serve well. If he did talk about a difficulty it was playing against a lefty. He got a taste of what his opponents are up against. ๐Ÿ™‚ And he gave full credit to Marterer, who did play very well.

Denis will start preparing for grass next week, going to Stuttgart where he plays the tourney the following week. He has a lot of tourneys scheduled, it will be interesting to see if he actually plays all of them. Of the grass season he said: “I’m excited, you know? It’s a short part of the season, but for me it’s the funnest part.”

  • Duke Carnoustie · June 1, 2018 at 1:04 pm

Catherine, the coverage is bad for me as well. I can find some streams but not too many.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 1:36 pm

Duke – yes, they seem variable at the GS. There was a good one at the AO but it’s gone now. Someone has started putting longer highlights on Youtube though the quality isn’t the greatest and they are a bit hit and miss which matches are covered.

  • catherine · June 1, 2018 at 2:52 pm

Kyrgios has entered the Surbiton tournament, next week, along with a few other dropouts from Paris. Maybe Svitolina will turn up – I think it’s a mixed event and she lives in London.

Surbiton and Beckenham used to be good pre-Wimbledon grass events – interviewed BJK at B’ham once, in a caravan – but B’ham’s been gone for a while.

    Those were the days ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Scoopmalinowski · June 1, 2018 at 4:47 pm

Kyrgiot is like a Harlem Globetrotter or WWFwrestler right now. Hes not serious about applying his talent to fulfill his potential. Can’t take him serious at the moment. Still waiting for him to wake up and put it all together.

  • Duke Carnoustie · June 1, 2018 at 6:19 pm

Nick’s stock is slightly higher than Jack Sock. Expect Fed to reward them with coveted Laced Cup spots no matter how fall they fall.

Sasha showed me a lot today. I thought h eddd was heading out.

Anyone see the Dutch girls comments on the WTA, Rachel something? Nothing big but said she is happy Serena is back. What was more interesting was she sort of dismissed Eli and Simonas tour dominance as a result of SW being out. Which is true but shows the girls don’t fear those two.

She said she does fear Shazza. Part of Shazzas m.o. is to be aloof to intimidate and it works. Good for her. Clowns like Kyrgios and Sock could learn from Masha.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 1, 2018 at 10:00 pm

If Sock and Nick had Maria’s obsession with winning, they’d be top five players. and if my grandmother had…

  • catherine · June 2, 2018 at 2:53 am

I didn’t see the comments Duke’s referring to but honestly, everyone’s living in a dream if they think Serena’s going to be around for very much longer as a top ranked player and somehow the rest are all going to fall in behind her and know their place.

The game changes, in the same way the men’s game will change when Federer retires, and that’s a good thing. There’s a period when someone dominates and then there’s often a kind of interregnum.

The ‘girls’ may not fear Simona or Svitolina, or Petra for that matter, but all the top 10 deserve their rankings. Petra’s won 4 tournaments in 2018 and those titles haven’t come to her by accident.

And Sharapova ? Aloof and feared or not, she hasn’t been overpowering since her return. Her reputation has outrun her achievements.

If rain doesn’t interfere 3 Germans play at the end of the women’s program – Petko, Georges and Kerber. They’ll all go down like ninepins, one after the other. Must feel like Fed Cup ๐Ÿ™‚

  • catherine · June 2, 2018 at 2:59 am

Scoop – if Nick is serious about W’don then it would make sense for him to enter a tournament like Surbiton and get grass practice in a low key event.

  • Scoopmalinowski · June 2, 2018 at 6:55 am

Until Nick wins three or four matches in a row, he can’t be taken seriously. He might be better suited to work as a circus clown or minor league hoops player if he keeps wasting his talent.

  • Dan Markowitz · June 2, 2018 at 7:30 am

Don’t think you can knock Kyrgios so much. He obviously has a body for whatever reason, posture, doesn’t work on his fitness enough, he’s knocked his body around a lot playing hard court tennis and hoops, that doesn’t hold up to the rigors of the tour.
But when right, he’s at a much higher level than Sock, who I don’t feel will ever recover to a Top 20 level of play while Kyrgios could easily do so.

  • catherine · June 2, 2018 at 7:39 am

Bad Petra day, sorry Hartt. Goes out to Kontaveit – 10 dfs didn’t help.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 2, 2018 at 8:26 am

Dan, his body is fine, his fitness is fine, I question all his bogus injuries. When he claims his elbow is hurt and serves like a monster for three sets it makes all of his alleged injuries suspect. I think he plays when he wants, and when he doesn’t want to play he concocts an injury. The body and physique of Nick are more than adequate to beat Nadal Fed and Djok the first times he played each. the body and physique of Nick are sufficient enough to serve how hard he can and create the power from the baseline and his movement is very good too when he wants to play. With Nick it’s all about when he wants to play, when he doesn’t want to play it’s obvious. Not really condemning Nick, he can do it his way, he’s having an excellent career. So did Philippoussis.

  • Hartt · June 2, 2018 at 8:51 am

Catherine, I watched that match. At least it was close, and Petra wasn’t quite good enough. But Kontaveit deserves credit, she played very well for the most part.

  • catherine · June 2, 2018 at 8:58 am

This French Open is the worst tournament I’ve seen so far for highlights, not to mention streaming. The official RG highlights are about 2 mins, no WTA or ATP highlights of many matches. If you want to see anything of Svitolina/Buzarnescu on Youtube you’re out of luck.

I assume RG have the filming rights all locked up with TV companies. The other GSs will be the same.

I’ve resigned myself to seeing tennis action in lesser events, no GSs any more.

  • catherine · June 2, 2018 at 9:07 am

Hartt – I don’t know what Petra’s record is like at RG. Will look it up. But I didn’t see her as a favourite this time. She’s probably looking forward to the grass.

Unfortunately, for the reasons I mention above, I probably won’t see any of the match.

Petko/Halep coming up. If I were Andrea I’d rush the net on every point. At least it would be over quickly.

  • Hartt · June 2, 2018 at 11:17 am

The Slams are the one time I get decent coverage of the women’s matches. But there are 3 or 4 matches shown on TV at the same time, so I have to choose, and sometimes end up watching some of my faves among the men.
