Please Tennis Gods, Make A Djokovic vs Federer Final in Cincy

By Scoop Malinowski

Though Novak Djokovic has stated on the record his greatest rival is Rafael Nadal and not Roger Federer, which some may perceive as a veiled knock on the King of Tennis, many tennis observers actually prefer the Federer vs Djokovic rivalry above all else in tennis today.

There seems to a slight bit more acid between Fed and Nole, dating back to their early contests, when Federer yelled at the Djokovic clan to shut up during a match in Europe and also when Dijana Djokovic, Nole’s mom, infamously said “The king is dead. Long live the king” after Novak trounced Fed at the 2009 Australian Open semis in straight sets.

Federer and Djokovic have played 45 times, with the most recent match being at 2016 Australian Open semis with the Serbian dominating 61 62 36 63. Djokovic also won their previous meeting at the 2015 ATP World Tour Final 63 64 after Fed beat Nole 62 75 during the round robin.

In 2015, Djokovic won their major meetings at US Open final 64 57 64 64 and the Wimbledon final 76 67 64 64 though Fed won their 2015 Cincy final 76 63.

Overall Djokovic leads the head to head 23-22 and their most recent matches show that Djokovic has established a mental edge and superiority over Federer which surely Fed will eagerly want to reverse if they can win their semifinal matches in Cincinnati today – Fed takes on Goffin while Djokovic plays Cilic.

Djokovic always seems to play Federer with an extra level of intensity, concentration and superhuman performance and if they meet on Sunday on Ohio, you can be sure Djokovic will be prepared to handle a vicious, furious and desperate onslaught from Federer.

And without a doubt, Djokovic would like nothing more than to sustain his mental and physical edge of Federer and possibly even eliminate him as a threat in the next two or three years.

Hopefully the stars will align and Goffin and Cilic will understand what’s really at stake for tennis and play their respective parts to make way for the two kings to duel once again for the 46th time.

Can’t wait to read which one of them Subconsciously tanked before Flushing, if they do play each other.

  • Hartt · August 18, 2018 at 5:02 pm

Scoop, you got the first part of your wish – Novak just defeated Marin in 3 sets.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 18, 2018 at 6:09 pm

Joe, the first set will be key, whoever usually gets it, the other semi tanks the second, the first set is the set to watch.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 18, 2018 at 6:11 pm

Cilic had won their last two meetings after Djokovic won the first 12 or 14. Good win for Djokovic, he loves to play Federer. Translation: He loves to inflcit beatdowns on Roger.

  • Hartt · August 18, 2018 at 8:22 pm

Goffin had to retire because of his shoulder, which apparently was a problem even before the match. So the final will indeed be Fed vs Novak.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 18, 2018 at 9:59 pm

Let’s hope for a good match. I fear someone will retire and make it an abomination.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 18, 2018 at 10:03 pm

Meanwhile Winston-Salem gets underway tomorrow as well as Tennys Sandgren faces Berankis around the same time for those of you who want to skip Fed-Djoker for the first Tour-level meeting between Sandy and the Lithuanian.

Also of note, Ryan Harrison plays the Croatian Borna Gojo who I mentioned previously on Monday. Gojo is a home favorite who will have the crowd on his side as part of Wake Forest’s NCAA title team that featured no U.S. players. Will the crowd be against Harry? This will surely upset him and fireworks could explode.

Goffin is the top seed in W-S but will likely pull out.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 9:20 am

Goffin was showing signs in the Delpo match that his shoulder was hurting. I was surprised the announcers missed it, they usually see it when the big stars show a slight trace of hint of any discomfort. Maybe they were too focused on watching Delpo.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 9:24 am

Duke, I think they will battle it out today. At least for one set. Too much at stake. Fed needs to beat Djokovic for his psyche. To balance the h2h. 99th title. Djokovic going for career Masters collection. First in Cincy. Wants to extend h2h vs Fed in his favor. First set will be magic. If it’s close, the loser could tank. Both players will surely try to blow out the other to make it an easy day. Fascinating duel, will be a ferocious battle.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 9:25 am

Duke, I think Gojo is that infamously bad line caller, videos of his bad line calls went viral with some ATP players criticizing how bad his calls were. Harrison might have been one to stick in his two cents. Fritz did for sure.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 19, 2018 at 10:47 am

Scoop, I hope you are right on this match. I don’t think Djoker’s game is up to snuff and I see Fed winning in straights. I hope I am wrong.

Correct Gojo is the bad line caller and Fritz called him out. Harry will no doubt be aware of this and want to humble the kid. How will the crowd factor in? It will be fascinating to see.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 12:44 pm

Duke, the specter of Roger Federer trying to “crush” Djokovic will surely give him extra alertness and energy and motivation. We will see both at their best today and if one gets thrashed it’s because the other was too good. I suspect Djokovic takes secret pleasure in beating Federer from all the early defeats and also especially the 2011 Roland Garros finger wag by Fed. This is a tennis rivalry as fierce and acidic as any other.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 19, 2018 at 4:35 pm

Simona really throws in the towel sometimes. Still she had played a lot of tennis the last 2 weeks.

Goffin pulls out of W-S, as expected.

Rain in W-S now so I will watch the Cincy men’s final instead!

  • catherine · August 19, 2018 at 4:56 pm

Simona will be playing even more tennis if she goes to New Haven as promised. Bertens ran off with the towel.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 19, 2018 at 6:27 pm

I certainly didn’t see that coming. Fed had held serve every time in this tourney and was broken three times. Djoker’s defensive abilities confounded the Swiss.

Now we see how critical a factor in Fed’s rise the last two years was the decline of Djoker. The favorites in NY are Rafa and Djoker for sure, though keep in mind they could be in the same quarter. Fed better hope that is the case.

These tourneys have proven that the big guns will keep on collecting trophies, especially with Wawrinka finding his form from a ghastly loss to a loser like DY to taking Rafa and Fed to the wire.

The NextGen looks more and more like the WaitTillNextYearGen when it comes to Slams.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 6:36 pm

Djokovic has now dominated Fed in all their major matches for the last four years. He had his A game today, just like the Wimbledon final. Djokovic at his best is superior than Fed or Rafa. His h2h records vs both are your proof. Today was another day of magical tennis, Fed desperately wanted this win to prove to himself and Djokovic that he can still beat him in a big match but he can’t. And may never again. Federer had several outbursts which showed how important this match was. Djokovic said before that whoever believes in the victory more is who wins. Point blank saying he’s better and he has greater belief. These losses or torture for Federer, he hates losing to Djokovic. A few more of these could hasten his retirement. Terrific match and another dazzling display by Djokovic.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 19, 2018 at 6:44 pm

Scoop, I was struck too by how calm Djoker as today as opposed to the anxiety he showed vs. Cilic. Most players are intimidated to this day vs. Fed but Djoker just relishes the matchup since he knows he is better.

I am not sure Djoker has the same belief against guys he has lost to like Kyrgios, Zverev and Tsitsipas that he may not have that mental edge against.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 19, 2018 at 7:00 pm

Let’s not forget this assessment by the legendary Robin Soderling, the only other player besides Djoker to conquer Nadal at RG:

“If they are both at the top, I think Novak would beat Roger more times than the opposite. ‘He moved so well, got so many balls back. That’s really tough for Roger because he might play too fast, he would panic a little bit.”

The Swede is correct. Djoker at his best has played the best tennis the world has ever seen.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 19, 2018 at 7:07 pm

Tennys Sandgren match postponed to tomorrow in W-S.

  • Gaurang · August 19, 2018 at 8:06 pm

Wow! Djoko completes the Golden Masters.

However, read in some forum that Lendl also won all of the 9 Grand Prix Super Series tournaments. However, they are not counting it since ATP Tour renamed the tournaments in 1990 and took over the entire tour from that year. So they are only seeing 1990 onwards.

Still a big achievement by Novak since Agassi, Sampras, Fed, Nadal, Murray — the other 4 big Masters players since then have not been able to do this!

Novak played well today and was very calm, but Roger made lot of unforced errors, played far below his best. I dont think age was a factor for Roger — I think it was more of the mental edge Novak has over Roger since he has won 6 of their last 8 matches, and simply that Roger’s reason to be super motivated is going down. He has won Cincy 7 times, and he knew that Novak lost 5 finals here. This may have caused a drop in the motivation to win the 8th one — instead he may have been okay with Novak winning the 1st Cincy title.

I remember in a post-match speech in one of the final losses of Novak against Roger, Novak said that he would have to wait until Roger retires to be able to win this tournament. I think Roger may have been feeling bad that …. well…. he is just not retiring… so let him win one!

Regarding the general level of play — as I have said before, Novak has taken tennis to heights that were never achieved by anyone. And this is not just superior shotmaking — since perhaps Fed and Nadal do better than Novak in that — I mean, in simply match-winning ability. Novak is the strongest match winning machine the world has seen.

Roger and Rafa though have played really well in the last 1-2 years. Their game has reached their peak, and I believe has reached very closed to Novak’s peak. It will be interesting matches going forward if Novak reaches his peak again (he is close).

  • Gaurang · August 19, 2018 at 8:09 pm

Btw, Lendl won all the Super series at a time when they were not as furiously competed as today’s Masters tournaments are.

Scoop, did the 9 Super series tournaments in 1980s require mandatory participation by top players like today? Were they as tough as today’s Masters?

  • Chazz · August 19, 2018 at 8:12 pm

It bears mentioning that Federer has not beaten anyone in the top 10 since February and has lost in 3 finals, the others to DelPo and Coric. His level has dropped since the AO and it was bound to happen sometime. Although Djoker has won more in recent years I would hardly call 24-22 convincing.

  • Gaurang · August 19, 2018 at 8:12 pm

Novak is coming back to his best tennis. And should be able to defeat his old foes easily.

But his biggest test is going to be against the next gen players: Kyrgios, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Theim, Del Potro, Shapavlov, Chung, and even Goffin when he’s playing well. He still struggles with these players. And he would have to adapt his game to be able to defeat them especially Kyrgios.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 10:01 pm

Duke, Federer evokes the very best out of Djokovic, Fed does that to a lot of players. To play Federer is like the biggest match of everyone’s career. That’s a lot of pressure Fed has to deal with every time out, most matches for Fed are just another match. But Djokovic absolutely has solved the Federer puzzle and Federer has created a monster. Djokovic is the perfect storm, the perfect tennis machine, perfect poise. I think it was extremely interesting that the Cincy crowd was louder and more animated for Djokovic. Finally tennis fans and masses are beginning to appreciate what a magical, wondrous, marvel of a special champion Djokovic is. Thank you to Roger for creating this incredible tennis machine though of course Federer tried to destroy the machine for many years but he only made it stronger, smarter and the ultimate tennis playing machine.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 10:02 pm

Soderlingdadamus got that one right. Well said by the hard hitting Swede powerhouse. Nadal even said after the 2016 Doha final that the best most perfect tennis anyone ever played against him was by Djokovic.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 10:09 pm

Gaurang I disagree, Fed wanted this one bad, he was ornery and irritated out there, he was giving it his best but he simply can’t handle Djokovic’s A game. It’s kind of like being chased down by Halloween Jason, Djokovic just keeps coming and coming and raising is game. Fed played very well but began to crumble under the onslaught. Fed did not subconsciously tank this match, no way, he wanted to block Djokovic from getting this new record and he wanted to level the h2h at 23-23, now it’s 24-22 Djokovic. Fed exploded a couple of outbursts and exhortations after winning big points, he wanted this win desperately. Very desperately. To create some doubt in Djokovic’s mind and to build his own confidence that he can beat Djokovic again in a big match. Now Fed has serious doubts if he can do that. And Djokovic is now even more mentally certain that he can continue to dominate Roger.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 10:11 pm

Gaurang I don’t know about the 80s, I was into hockey and boxing back then. In the 90s most of the top players played the Super Nines, even Pete played clays, even took a 0 and 1 drubbing to Santoro once in Rome or Monte Carlo.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 10:12 pm

Gaurang, after Wimbledon Djokovic said in some ways he feels he’s better now than in 2015.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2018 at 10:23 pm

Djokovic post match quotes: “(Federer and Nadal) they make me play my best tennis. They make me improve. They made me think about what I need to do in order to try to be the best player in the world. Having not played Roger for over two years was really strange, to be honest. I thought that we haven’t played for maybe a year or something like that, but then I remembered that actually the last time was in Australia. Was quite a long time ago, which is unusual, because we got to play so many times over the decade.”

  • Gaurang · August 20, 2018 at 4:42 am

Scoop, well I think agree that Fed may not have given the trophy so easily. But I just feel, still, that he is not as motivated to win yet one more masters title. He has achieved it all — 20 slams — what more can one do? A record that is likely never going to be surpassed in the next 50 years. (only Rafa has a chance if he stays healthy for a few more years). I think for the remaining career, Fed will mostly focus on winning slams, and will take it easy in the masters.

I am not sure whether Djokovic is playing better than ever. I think he is getting there, but significantly below his standards. He wouldnt have gone to 3 sets in 4 matches here if he were at his best.

But Djokovic’s current game is fine tuned to defeat Nadal, Fed and other players of his generation. I think he will fall short of defeating Kyrgios, Zverev, Tsitsipass, Chung, etc consistently.

I believe Djokovic needs to adapt his game to be more aggressive, and go for winners earlier (he can do it). He will need to be more aggressive in his service returns, try to go for outright winner instead of returning deep straight. He will need to improve his backhand down the line and use it as a weapon much more often. He may need to hit flatter often to get an advantage earlier.

We have seen Federer and Nadal adapt their games for the new generation. Fed improved his backhand to become a weapon, and started to use drop shots much more. He invented SABR. Nadal became much more offensive, improved his backhand a lot, and improved his wide serve to an incredible level winning the point often in 1-2 shots.

  • Hartt · August 20, 2018 at 7:22 am

Scoop, there is no way Fed played well in that match. Even at the beginning he had to fight to hold serve. His first serve % for much of the match was around 51%, that spells trouble for a guy who depends so much on his serve. He had 39 UFEs in 2 sets. His FH was totally MIA, he was hitting those shots into the net or long. He couldn’t return to save his life. Even Novak commented that Fed wasn’t returning well. Novak also said that Fed wasn’t moving well. I hadn’t noticed that, but since Novak had the first hand view, I will take his word. Fed made DFs on key points, leading to a break of serve more then once.

Jonathan, on peRFect tennis, who knows more about Fed’s game than anyone, rated his performance as poor.

Yes, Novak’s good form played a role in Fed’s poor play, but it was only part of the story. Fed was missing easy shot after easy shot. Any decent player would have beat Fed yesterday.

That is not to say that Djovak did not play well. He did, and certainly deserved the win.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2018 at 10:42 am

Hartt, it’s Djokovic that made him appear to play badly. Djokovic is the best returner of all time and his returning affected Fed’s serving. Fed looked good all week and he looked very good yesterday too but his best tennis has repeatedly failed to overcome Djokovic. Same pattern repeats itelf over and over in their recent major matches, the matches start off at a superb level then eventually Djokovic takes control and Fed falters. Same pattern. Djokovic has proven he is the superior player.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2018 at 10:50 am

Gaurang, you forgot the part of how important it was for Fed to break the mental edge Djokovic has over him, and also the head to head record which he could have leveled with a win yesterday, now he’s down 22-24 to Djokovic. These are important aspects of the mental warfare between the two. Right now, in many ways, after losing all the important matches to Djokovic since 2014, Fed is now second banana to Djokovic. And Fed does not like that at all, we all know Fed is not particularly fond of Djokovic so to now be his second banana is deeply irritating to Roger.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 20, 2018 at 1:02 pm

No question a stinging loss for RF. The hate is real. He didn’t reach out to Djoker and offer any words of wisdom when Djoker was going through his marital woes and hired that crazy guy. Fed just sat back, laughed silently and collected Slams. But now he can’t hide from Djoker anymore.

Roger only likes the players he dominates, like Roddick and Stan. Those are his buddies. Players who are serious threats he can’t be true friends with. Unlike Djoker, who is friends with Murray. This is why Roger really is the ruthless competitor he is.

That finger wag at RG was Rog reminding Novak he wasn’t there yet. Then later on Novak hit the “lucky shot” heard round the world at the Open that rattled Roger. It is epic stuff. Yesterday was just a superior player beating an inferior one.

Scoop is right. Djoker’s contortionist returns rattled Fed and he went for too much. That accounts for the bulk of the errors, Fed going for too much out of fear.

I also think Rog doesn’t have the match practice these days he needs. But the draw in NY could work in his favor and he could sneak this out. I won’t count him out.

I will count out the NextGen. Domi Thiem is nowhere to be found these days.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2018 at 3:16 pm

Duke, Djokovic has inflicted too many heartbreaking losses on Fed, and vice versa early on. But Djokovic has pulled the reversal and seems to have Federer in a stranglehold now. It’s very possible, even probable now that Djokovic is going to dominate Federer from here on out. That has to be Fed’s very worst nightmare scenario. And also it’s a nightmare for Fed’s legions of fanatics and fans. No one likes to be on a sinking ship. It’s possible a lot of Fed fans could hop ship over to the Djokovic Armada. The way the Cincy crowd was louder and more animated for Djokovic was astounding. Djokovicmania?

  • Gaurang · August 20, 2018 at 7:34 pm

Look at this Fed post match interview:

    https://youtu.be/o1TCUTpEOIc

He seems almost indifferent to the result.

  • Hartt · August 20, 2018 at 7:53 pm

Scoop, Fed did not play particularly well in the tournament as a whole. He was fortunate to get Gojowczyk and L. Mayer as his first 2 opponents. Stan was more of a test and he did get the first set against Fed. But Roger has owned Stan on hard courts, so winning that match wasn’t a big deal. And Goffin, shoulder injury and all, took the first set to a TB. If David weren’t injured he could well have won that match.

Given Fed’s level of play he was lucky he did not have to face either Raonic or Cilic, because I am far from sure that he could have won against either of them.

  • Hartt · August 20, 2018 at 8:07 pm

I didn’t think that he sounded indifferent to the result, more that he did not want to dwell on why he played poorly. After acknowledging that his RoS was “awful” and that he hadn’t moved well, he wanted to change the subject away from his 2nd serve returns.

What I found concerning was Fed saying he needed a rest. After playing no matches after Wimby and then 4 matches plus a set at Cincy, he needs a rest? He is getting old!

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2018 at 10:09 pm

Fed shook the loss off well, he usually does after losses to Djokovic so as to not give him any extra satisfaction. Fed seemed more distraught after losing to Anderson at Wimbledon, remember he even said it was the worst part of tennis to have to talk to the media about such a tough loss. Of course Fed is going to on the surface shake any loss to Djokovic off as no big deal but this loss may have been a lot more damaging to his psyche than anyone realizes.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2018 at 10:11 pm

Well Hartt, Federer has looked substandard all year after Melbourne. He’s been a little off from last year’s heroics. To be expected at one year older. But still he’s looked fantastic for 37. One thing is clear, Roger is not the best player in the world right now, it’s Rafa with Djokovic a close second despite what the rankings say.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2018 at 10:13 pm

Hartt, Fed did not look so tired all week despite the scheduling chaos. He’s super fit as always. But it was a physical hectic week, his first tournament since Wimbledon and losing the final 64 64 is still an excellent result. Perfect prep for US Open.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 20, 2018 at 10:52 pm

Let’s not pretend that Fed is a bum walking around with a wooden racket. He is 37-5 and been in the final of every tourney except SW19 and Miami.

I just think he is not playing enough tennis. Skipping the clay season makes sense to get ready for SW19 but getting ready for hardcourts is another matter. He is also having trouble playing consecutive days now.

It’s why with a favorable draw he has a chance in NY with the extra rest in between. But this could be his last crack. On the other hand if he draws someone like a Rublev or Tiafoe in round one, he could go right out.

Fed definitely didn’t want to give Djoker the satisfaction of beating him. Still he has a nice cushion of seven more Slams than Djoker.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 20, 2018 at 11:04 pm

Harry kicked the ass of the college player Gojo in W-S tonight. Gojo is a big guy with a big forehand and bog serve yet he was out-aced 12-1. Harry was pumping himself up with the crowd against him and said in the interview after he understood the crowd was on the side of the home favorite. Simply put, he made the kid look like an amateur.

Harry v. Gilles Simon tomorrow night.

  • Duke Carnoustie · August 21, 2018 at 12:21 am

I will say that Pliskova is the worst No. 1 ever, worse than Dinara. The only thing that gone right for her this year is her wedding. That and getting some revenge over Coco.

Remember she was the No. 1 seed last year at the USO.

  • catherine · August 21, 2018 at 2:22 am

I’m late to the party here but I’ll just say Federer is 37 and this should be his last year playing.

Duke – It’s not just that Ka Pliskova’s doing horribly – the great Czech women’s tennis empire is crumbling. No more Fed Cups for a generation.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 21, 2018 at 7:22 am

Roger get a bad draw? Never gonna happen. The tennis gods won’t allow it. The world no. 2 is having a fine year and is still a threat to be no. 1 if he wins US Open and plays a lot of fall events.

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 21, 2018 at 7:23 am

Catherine, Fed will play to 2020 Tokyo Olympics and most likely beyond.

  • catherine · August 21, 2018 at 8:08 am

Scoop – Roger might play but he won’t be winning. Getting old – we all think it won’t happen to us.

(You know I can see quite a few players making their farewells after Tokyo 2020.)

  • Hartt · August 21, 2018 at 8:23 am

It is far from certain that Fed will play Tokyo 2020. He said that his discussions with Uniqlo did not even include the Olympics. He went on to say that he did not know what the requirements were to play. He had better find out quickly, because he will need to play Davis Cup next year to fulfill that requirement, if he does decide to play Tokyo.

  • Gaurang · August 21, 2018 at 9:28 am

I am beginning to think that Fed could retire after US Open or ATP Finals this year. He is still playing well, but I am beginning to think that his motivation to win and desire to keep going are going down a bit.

But yeah, Olympics is the only thing that he hasnt won, so that could be one reason for him to play on.

Agree that Rafa is the best player right now. Djokovic, if he continues to play like he did since Queens, could be second along with Roger. I do feel Delpo is becoming very strong though. He has finally, after a LONG time, reached his peak level that he had reached in end of 2009. I would put him second as well along with Roger and Novak.
