New York Open: The Intrigue of Korda vs Tiafoe and Harrison vs Young

harrison
By Scoop Malinowski

The New York Open could not have scheduled a more dynamically interesting opening night card double bill which will feature Sebastian Korda vs Frances Tiafoe and Ryan Harrison vs Donald Young tonight.

For a tennis enthusiast these are two fascinating clashes. Tiafoe is or was one of the leaders of the American #NEXTGEN brigade but in the last six months his poor results have diminished expectations. After showing such bright promise earlier in 2017 with heroic losing efforts versus Federer, Del Potro and Isner, Tiafoe has failed to get over the hurdle and is suffering bad losses to the likes of Matt Ebden.

Now to add to Tiafoe’s pressures, he has to face a new American teenager, three years younger than himself – Sebi Korda who has earned a wildcard into his first ATP event as a reward for winning the Australian Open junior boys title three weeks ago.

One year ago, Korda and Tiafoe both played the Sarasota Open Challenger in April. Korda received a wildcard, as he lives literally just a short walking distance from the venue of the event at El Conquistador in Bradenton, FL. Korda played the first round night match against Blaz Rola and though he put up an impressive effort, the then 16 year old was outgunned and beaten in straight sets by the former top 100 player.

Tiafoe ended up winning the Sarasota Open, defeating Tennys Sandgren in the final in two very impressive sets by Tiafoe.

But a lot can change in a matter of ten months in tennis. Now Tiafoe must deal with the pressure of subduing an explosive, confident teenager who certainly has the capability of causing an upset tonight at Nassau Coliseum. Korda has all the weapons, the movement, the serve, and the confidence of winning big matches. He also has his father, Petr Korda, the former ATP world no. 2, in his corner. Petr Korda has a genius tennis mind and it’s not a stretch to wonder if he will be able to figure out the winning formula for his son to knock off Tiafoe, who has only won one match this year against Stefan Kozlov in Dallas.

Ryan Harrison vs Donald Young is also an intriguing clash. Both are young Americans from different generations, Young is 28 and ranked 65, Harrison is 25 and ranked 44. Young of course, like any player with pride, abhors losing to a younger compatriot. The two have had several thrilling clashes, including last year in the Memphis Open semifinal, won of course by Harrison 64 64. They also played against each other last year in the French Open doubles final, again that match was won by Harrison and Michael Venus over Young and Santiago Gonzalez.

Harrison leads the overall head to head 5-2, since their first match in 2010 at Winnetka Challenger won by Young 63 62.

Adding to the intrigue is Harrison’s coach Michael Russell, also played six ATP matches vs Young and won five of them (not including six other Challenger and qualifying matches which were split at 3-3).

So tonight will be a terrific night of tennis at the inaugural opening night of the New York Open ATP tennis event at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, NY and both matches will be televised by Tennis Channel.

Felix Auger-Aliassime just played his first ATP main tour match, against Filip Krajinovic, ranked No. 38. He showed nerves at first, but settled down and played better. winning the 2nd set. Krajinovic prevailed in the end, winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

But there were times during the match when Felix made some terrific shots, showing his considerable promise.

The linespeople hear a player say a curse word and they run over and tell the chair umpire who then issues the warning or penalty. I saw a lineswoman do that to Daniel Evans in Miami last year playing Escobedo and Evans got a point penalty on a key point in third set and freaked out. Obviously the umpire heard nothing and the match went on. Young could be Tawana Brawleying this up into a fake news racial incident. Just like Duke lacrosse also. There is clearly an agenda to replace whites in all white nations and this nonsense is just a symptom of the agenda. The agenda is to turn all non whites against whites and eventually genocide the white race. The extremists like George Soros want this and have made statement about replacing whites but of course the media hides it. It's a shame this is happening but it will eventually explode. It's no coindence that all the white nations in Europe are being forced to take in millions of third worlders.

Son of a Biscuit is definitely a whiner at times and it's clear he has a grudge with Harrison based on who knows what, I sensed it during their Memphis match last year. Harrison is very smart and he's not racist so he would never say something very stupid. He can spout off and swear and yell, even Federer has done that many times. I hope the media does not try to demonize Harrison here, what he said was harmless.

Harrison is a great guy, and a fair and cool person. Interviewed him several times, he's a level headed, very intelligent young man off the court and a ferocious competitor on court. Never saw him do anything dumb but he can vent his frustrations and anger which is normal and healthy. He's just a little better player than Young and Young can't accept that. The head to head record, the rankings comparison and the French Open doubles final prove Harry is the superior player. Young has to swallow it and shut up.

Young got those WCs because the USTA wanted him to become an elite ATP player and gave him shortcuts to the top that he did not take full advantage of. SOmeone figured it out, he made like six figures on just the WCs alone. Guys like Kozlov and Paul and Opelka barely got any WCs compared to DY. Which reveals a lot.

well he said something that is borderline racist to Serena and went on to praise pova when she was caught doping that she didnt do it on purpose..he comes off as an entitled pos and ignorant…I am not surprised because he is from Louisiana..

Johnson dropped in the rankings last year and this year he's falling even more. I know for a fact Johnson trained like a beast in the offseason before 2017 and it did not pay off, he dropped. A player loses confidence from that. Johnson was moving so well early last year. Strange how he has had poor results. Maybe the loss of his dad is still affecting him.

Are you as offended by Serena's ugly hot head moments as you are of Harrison's which pale in comparison to threatening murder of a linesperson and bodily harm on a chair umpire in a dark alley.

    Scoop,

Let’s stop the talk about a genocide against white people, Ok? Your politics are to the right of Joe McCarthy so let’s not bring them up on this site. It just tarnishes the reputation of the site and makes you sound and look like an extremist. So let’s keep the talk to tennis, alright?

Harry is playing with a conviction and a purpose that I haven’t seen from him before in his career. I’m interested to see now that he has a fine coach and has a real direction, how far up he can go.

I watched Felix today against Krajinovic who had that great run in Paris last winter, and I was really impressed by the young Canadian. He comes to the net a lot which I like, has a big serve for a 17 year old and he’s just a lot of fun to watch play.

How about Kohlschreiber with his win over Khachanov today. The German is such a smart player. I really enjoy seeing him build points, especially against bigger more powerful players. He’s had a real solid career; not as good as Gasquet’s who’s game he reminds me of, but very solid.

  • jg · February 13, 2018 at 7:29 pm

I’m thinking by the French open Korda and/or Felix will make a move, it may happen at Indian Wells, the bounce on the IW court will be right in Korda’s strike zone, assuming he qualifies or gets a WC.

  • Chazz · February 13, 2018 at 7:36 pm

FYI and for what it’s worth, a NY Times reporter, David Waldstein tweeted that the ATP has found no evidence to support Donald Young’s claim that Harrison made a racial comment toward him.

  • scoopmalinowski · February 13, 2018 at 8:16 pm

Felix was sensational in defeat. Battled all the way and pushed Krajinovic to the wire and made him suffer. That Felix can push top 50 players like this at 17 as an atp rookie is miraculous. Just wait till hes 20. I can see the nextgen final now…korda vs felix.

  • scoopmalinowski · February 13, 2018 at 8:19 pm

If DY fabricated this fake news fake racism he should be fined and suspended. These fake racism allegations against whites are terrible and too frequent. I still like Young. Hes just in a bad place as his career is on the rocks. Hes a journeyman and it may never change.

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 13, 2018 at 8:45 pm

Scoop, Young should definitely be suspended. I still like him too but he made a mistake here. Who knows, the girlfriend may have influenced him, just like Colin Kaepernick’s Black Panther girlfriend turned him against the country.

I said 6 months before but 3 is probably enough. You are right, he can’t accept that Harrison is having the better career.

Young was always going to lose this argument because Harry saying he is black is flat-out not racist. It’s a fact. What if Harry said to Tsonga, you French guys all eat baguettes? Like would that be a problem. Most of the French guys probably like baguettes. The idea that these characterizations are racist boggles the mind. I mean no one was raised to think this way. What if D-Young said to Harry, you Louisiana guys like Cajun food? See what nonsense this is?

Harrison is a good guy and he’s smart and definitely not racist but he loses his cool way too much. You can find meltdown after meltdown on YouTube. Can’t represent the U.S. acting like that; bring in Sandgren who beat a top-5 player en route to a Slam QF along with a rout of a wounded Wawrinka. You have to reward a performance like that. I don’t care what he does on clay in South America; Sandgren said on a Tennessee radio station that he wanted to avoid the media hoopla in the States so he skipped NY and Delray. It’s clear he hates the left-wing media.

No reason to bash Louisiana. The fans in Asheville, N.C. this past weekend showed how big tennis is in the South. The Winston-Salem Open thrives as well as does the Atlanta tourney; these are events that were once held elsewhere.

Scoop you are dead on about Young’s wild cards. It should be obvious to anyone who watches tennis what that was all about.

The talk of replacing white people is real. You hear it all the time on the news about the population changing. It only makes sense for whites to fight back and that is what is happening in the country.

It’s been too long to use Johnson losing his dad as an excuse. He is getting married soon and his wife needs to get his head straight. One thing he has going for him is his friendship to Harrison and Sandgren, whom he defended on Twitter. They know what it’s like to be attacked by the left-wing media.

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 13, 2018 at 10:24 pm

Some more info has surfaced, courtesy of the NY Times that makes things look worse for DY…

About 30 minutes after the match, Harrison said, the ATP supervisor for the tournament, Tom Barnes, called him into his office and, with Young present, notified Harrison of Young’s charge.

“I was totally shocked,” Harrison said. “I begged him to find a tape of the broadcast. I said I would sign a document right there on the spot saying I would accept a three-month suspension, without appealing, if it’s true.”

Doha here since this thread is most recent – good line-up today.

Garcia’s demolition of Cibulkova in 3rd set was a sight – Cibulkova won 4 pts.Caroline has a beautiful game when she is on – who’s got the best forehand, Garcia, Georges, Kvitova, Halep ?

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 14, 2018 at 2:37 am

4 points in 6 games? Insane.

Garcia could get Kiki in an all-French showdown. Kiki has been boosted by true love.

Keys and Bellis set for an All-American showdown.

  • catherine · February 14, 2018 at 2:57 am

If Garcia plays Kiki that could be one grudge match. Caroline doesn’t play Fed Cup which must annoy some people – don’t know the reason – French tennis politics ?

People have been complaining on Youtube how handshakes have been clipped from WTA matches – I had to laugh.
Is that what they watch for ?

But WTA site had Garcia/Cubulkova at the net. Perfectly ok.

Trouble with that Nike gear is that most of the women are wearing the pink and you can’t tell them apart. I know at W’don they all wear white but the outfits tend to be different.

I suppose Simona will turn up in pink as well, to suit her new Pollyana-type public personality. Actually I preferred the old one. Nike’s probably writing scripts for her.

  • Hartt · February 14, 2018 at 6:25 am

Speaking of Nike kits, I am watching Rublev vs Pouille who are in Rotterdam. Thank goodness Rublev is wearing the grey and black version. I’m not sure I could cope with seeing the skinny redhead in bright pink. His kits always seem too big for him, although this one is not too bad.

I only saw the last few games of the first set, but woke up in time to see a truly marathon one – it went something like 15 minutes, but Pouille held in the end. However, Rublev took the first set 7-5. Apparently he’d been down 1-4 in that set. He is now up a break in the 2nd set.

  • dan markowitz · February 14, 2018 at 6:47 am

The ATP is investigating the Harry-DY situation. Again if Harry said, “All black people….” it is way out of line. A lot different than saying to Tsonga, “All French people like baguettes…” Why?

Well, let me tell about our history in this country. Let me tell you about blacks being slaves and then being lynched and being treated like third class citizens in this country and going to jail at like 10 times the rate of whites. I worked for the New York Times doing articles about inmates in prisons like Sing Sing, and most of the inmates are black.

So that’s why making a black smear is different than making a French or Italian or Polish smear, although those aren’t good or right either. It reflects bad on American players that this kind of flareup happens. There are two prominent French black players and I’ve never heard a white French player say anything derogatory about Tsonga or Monfils.

Dan like 1% of whites and Jews owned slaves over 200 years ago and a lot of slaves were treated with care and love but the media doesn't focus on that, the media wants to incite racial hatred with a hateful slant on slavery. Let's face it, blacks commit most of the crimes and murders in USA and the stats show it. Take a look at the situation in Chicago. I never knew a white racist in my life. The damned media has to stsop inciting this racial hate division tactics that it loves to do to divide and conquer us. Blacks are not treated like third class citizens. We give them billions in welfare and aid and affirmative action. If whites treated blacks like second class people the NBA and NFL would go bankrupt. Whites are very generous with blacks and charities and helping poor in Africa. Look up Heidi Albertsen's work and Shoes 4 Africa I resent you saying white people treat blacks like third class citizens that is patently FALSE and anti white racist. Jews call black people the derogatory term "schwartze." That is racist. I asked a black friend who was a top junior from NYC if he ever experienced racism in tennis? He said once at a hotel a white woman mistook his mother for being a worker at the hotel. That's the only damned racism he ever experienced. I think the damned leftist media fabricates a lot more racism and fake news incidents because it suits their agenda which is to incite racial hatred between blacks and whites and blame whitey for everything. If Young faked this Dan, what should be the punishment? A slap on the wrist because 1% of whites and Jews owned slaves over 200 years ago? Stop this anti white agenda of smearing whites as hateful bigots, it's just not true. Whites are very good to blacks in America today except for a few isolated incidents which the media goes crazy over, while totally ignoring the outrageous numbers of black on white hate crimes.

    Dan/Scoop

Can we stop this please or move it all to a more appropriate website ? Scoop, why don’t you set up one for your own particular agenda ?

I come here to get away from contentious social issues – of course I know they exist and must be discussed and dealt with, but surely not on Tennis-Prose. And a lot of this talk is US centred and we are are not all Americans – I wouldn’t comment on US based problems because I don’t know enough about them, not in detail, and I wouldn’t, and don’t, appreciate comments on the race situation in Britain and Europe.

Eventually other tennis followers will stop coming here, if they haven’t already, and that would be a great pity.

I don’t know when this started – certainly wasn’t the case when I first came here around a couple of years ago I think. I really enjoyed the talk then – I don’t now. Seems we can’t last more than a couple of posts before veering off into the same old stuff.

Let the ATP sort out Harrison’s situation. Nothing we can do about it anyway.

Try to get it back on tenins and less on political. Maybe the ATP should force Young and Harrison to play doubles together for ten tournaments 🙂 That would force them to be friends. Kind of like the Indo Pak Express or forcing an Israeli to play with a Palestinian or Syrian or Iranian or Lebanese.

  • Dan Markowitz · February 14, 2018 at 8:42 am

    Scoop,

Do you respect Gregg Popovich, 6-time NBA champ, Air Force graduate, this is what he says about racism and I totally agree:

“We live in a racist country that hasn’t figured it out yet. And it’s always important to bring attention to it, even if it angers some people. The point is, you have to keep it in front of everybody’s nose so they understand it still hasn’t been taken care of and we have a lot of work to do.”

I know you’d like to ignore it, but we live in a racist country. That’s the truth. And if you think it doesn’t affect players of color on the pro tour then you didn’t read my article on the subject back in 1991 in The New York Times.

Here it is for your reference:

    http://www.nytimes.com/1991/02/17/sports/views-of-sport-charges-of-racism-now-a-tennis-problem.html?pagewanted=all.

Here’s a quote in the article from Arthur Ashe about the fear he believed the USTA had
    about developing black tennis players.

Arthur Ashe, the former Wimbledon and United States Open champion, said that administrators of the United States Tennis Association, whose mandate it is to promote the game and develop young talent, held “a latent fear” of black players’ potential. “They’re worried that if we made our mark, we’d take over the sport,” Ashe said. “They’re worried that we’d start producing tennis players like we have basketball players.”

And another article I wrote on the New York black tennis player, Phil Williamson, who was the no. 1 player at Columbia in the 1990’s:

    http://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/31/nyregion/athlete-traces-tennis-successes.html

  • catherine · February 14, 2018 at 8:49 am

Scoop – ok, I know what you mean about political differences. I do have a couple of friends whose views are not mine and we’ve agreed to avoid politics generally and it does work, we are still friends.

Meanwhile – back on the court Kvitova took over 2 hrs to subdue Radwanska in Doha and everyone is waiting for Simona’s appearance.

Will Simona be Kerberised in 2018 ?

  • catherine · February 14, 2018 at 8:52 am

  • catherine · February 14, 2018 at 8:55 am

    Looking easy for Simona.

  • catherine · February 14, 2018 at 9:04 am

Simona’s in pink with shoulder stripes but the cut of the kit isn’t as flattering as her adidas line – the tank top suits her better. If I were Simona I’d ask Nike for a rethink.

And I don’t like that separation between top and shorts on any player.

I like Julia G’s dress – don’t know the make, same as CoCo’s.

    End of fashion comments 🙂

  • Hartt · February 14, 2018 at 9:34 am

I want to second Catherine’s motion about getting back to tennis. Or at least have 1 thread here for political discussion that the rest of us can avoid.

Like Catherine, because I am not an American, I don’t feel involved with these political discussions and wouldn’t feel qualified to take part even if I were. What happens within countries is so complex. I have enough trouble keeping somewhat up to date with what is happening in Canada.

In the meantime, there is a lot happening in tennis this week. I can’t see the WTA matches, but it sounds like there are some intriguing matches happening in Doha.

I am watching the Rotterdam matches. Of course I was glued to Felix’s match against Krajinovic yesterday. I thought he played well for his ATP main tour debut. He acknowledged being nervous in the beginning, but he settled down and played well over all. He said his goal this season is to get close to top 100 (imagine he wants to make top 100). He is about No. 163. Felix has a WC for Marseille next week. These tournament directors want to establish a relationship early on with a future superstar.

Right now Dimitrov vs Sugita is a very entertaining match. Sugita is playing very well, and although he lost the first set 4-6, he is up a break in the 2nd. Grigor has his hands full.

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 14, 2018 at 10:10 am

My last comment on this is that Harry did nothing wrong and saying black people say come on just isn’t racist. Like how? I mean use your heads. This is not a political commentary though I agree with what Scoop is saying that slavery greatly benefited African-Americans and that they were better off in that system since they were treated well. Scoop is not wrong in saying that and plenty of reasonable white people agree that blacks thrived under slavery and were well respected. And of course, white people do plenty for black people in terms of charity, scholarship, etc.

Anyway we shouldn’t demonize and a three-month suspension for DY should be enough, though I don’t think the ATP will suspend him. I wonder why?

Dimitrov downs Sugita. So is Fed really going to win this tourney? If he does on entering at short notice, it makes the young guys look bad. Fed may be No. 1 for quite some time. Is Rafa a lock to play IW and Miami? I would doubt it.

Whites have done everything and more, like Duke says, charity, welfare, donations, handouts, scholarships, affirmative action, supporting NBA, NFL, black music, etc. Nothing is ever enough. Nobody is worried that blacks will start producing dominant tennis players like basketball players. If it happens, let it be. White people love Serena and Venus and Blake and Monfils. White people support these players very much all over the world. Stop crying racism.

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 14, 2018 at 2:15 pm

Scoop your words and rationale are completely spot on. Yes sadly most people can’t handle the truth. Slavery was one of the greatest things the United States ever accomplished and many of our founding fathers who are idolized to this day owned slaves and treated them with great respect. Africa was a wasteland and slaves found a much life here just like many others.

If we can’t respect the people who founded our great nation, who can we respect?

Keep fighting the good fight Scoop and keep educating people on how great slavery was for whites and for blacks, who also owned slaves.

Goffin and Berdych set to meet for the first time since the shocking 6-0, 6-0 for the Belgian two years ago on clay. That won’t happen indoors. This match will let us know if Berdych is any kind of threat now or if his time is past.

Young is in danger of dropping down the rankings, he's in the 60s now but he won rounds in IW and Miami last year so he will need to protect some points. Young has put in the work and gotten in good shape for the last two years but he was unable to do anything special in singles or set a new career high ranking. Last year he finally beat Isner in Memphis, first win over Isner after four close losses, but then he lost to Harrison in the SF. Young is a frustrated player, like so many others 🙂 To stoop so low to fabricate a fake racial hate accusation on Harrison is totally unacceptable but I'm sure all offended whites will forgive Young for this and wish him the best and still support him because he is a good person and he has an entertaining, stylish game.

And Young refused to talk to the media today in NY so clearly he made the whole thing up. I know it all along.

Yes, it’s super low to tell a lie like this but society somehow accepts it and there will be no punishment. Only me and Scoop pointed out the truth and got vilified for it. We’ll take solace in being right. I credit Harrison for not throwing DY under the bus.

I was one of the Ball boys working that match I was standing right behind them. Not one thing was mentioned about race . There was cursing and threatening to fight outside and Ryan made fun of Young’s height.

I’m returning here for one last comment.

Duke said ‘ Slavery was one of the greatest things the United States ever accomplished’.

It beggars belief that anyone can seriously make that statement in the 21st century. And go unchallenged on this website.

Many people worked heroically during the 19th century to abolish slavery and outlaw the slave trade, and that work is still carried on today because there is, unfortunately, still a need for it in some parts of the world.

As for other obnoxious comments around here, I’ll say no more except it’s given me an insight into the way certain minds think and I don’t like it at all.

    So, bye.

Moxie – you’re right but Scoop will never change.
