Marcelo Rios Amazon Documentary In The Works

Amazon has teamed up with a Chilean production company to produce a documentary about former ATP world no. 1 player Marcelo Rios.

The usually media-shy winner of eighteen ATP singles titles is fully supporting the project and has an interest to have the story of his spectacular and controversial career and life told at last.

Rios, whom Roger Federer has many times cited as one of his tennis hero inspirations, has been living in Sarasota, Florida for the last two years with his wife and five children.

The film will focus on the illustrious and colorful career of the infamously controversial world champion who remains a hugely popular figure in his native Chile. Rios became world no. 1 in April 1998 after beating Andre Agassi in straight sets in the Miami Open final. The reign of Rios as the world’s best tennis player lasted six weeks. The film will also share some interesting revelations about Rios, which can’t be discussed at this time.

Because I authored one of three books on Rios (“Marcelo Rios: The Man We Barely Knew”, the only one in English), I will be assisting the research team to secure interviews with tennis players who played a role in the career of Rios. Like the recent Netflix film on Guillermo Vilas, this project about Marcelo Rios promises to be fascinating.

Before Federer came along, Rios was my all-time favorite player and so will be looking forward to this. But…did you actually find that Vilas documentary fascinating? One and half hours to explain the statistical truism that if a ranking is based on a trailing average, then calculating rankings at irregular intervals will lead to a different result than if you calculate weekly. I had to stop watching when the reporter said his family spent 12 years trying to “prove” Vilas was no. 1. That’s like 2 hours excel work tops.

Bill McGill, We have in common Rios being our favorite player, though I did not let Federer overthrow Rios ) Yes that statistical emphasis was somewhat tedious but it’s admirable how much effort these people voluntarily dedicated to help Vilas state his case. Vilas is one of my all time favorite players, mostly for having the honor and privilege to meet him and interview him many times at US Open, and the film showed him in a very personal up close way, there were so many poignant moments in the film. Also mesmerized by the old film and stories. Maybe because Vilas was before my time, a lot of the content of the film were new territory for my tennis experience.
