Focusing On Wimbledon Third Round Matchups

By Scoop Malinowski

We’re now into the stage of Wimbledon where each player has won two rounds and their game levels and confidences are rising. We’re into the meat and potatoes of the tournament. The match-ups in the third round can make or break a tournament and in some cases, a career. Let’s take a look at the third round matchups…

Federer vs Struff: Fed leads the series 2-0 but both matches were of the 64 76 variety, which suggests a shocker is possible. Struff has the firepower and the volleys to trouble Roger.

Mannarino vs Medvedev: The French lefty leads the h2h 2-0 and both wins were decisive straight setters.

Querrey vs Monfils: They’ve only met twice, 11 years ago on clay in Austria and two years ago in Washington DC. Monfils won both.

Anderson vs Kohlschreiber: Anderson leads 3-0 h2h and should continue his mastery of the German veteran.

Pella vs McDonald: First meeting between these two surprise third round debutantes.

Raonic vs Denis Novak: The big serving Canadian has a favorable draw and should be quite pleased to meet the winner of Macpella.

Isner vs Albot: Fourth meeting of the year for these two opposites. Albot won on Long Island but Isner has won the next two revenge encounters.

Tsitsipas vs Fabbiano: 35 ranked Greek won their only meeting in three sets at Roland Garros qualies last year.

Khachanov vs Tiafoe: Heavyweight match up of two fast rising forces. This first meeting could build into an interesting rivalry.

Edmund vs Djokovic: Nole won their first three clashes but Edmund won the most recent in Madrid this year 63 in the third.

Nishikori vs Kyrgios: Kei has won all three matches vs Nick, all in Masters Series events in 2016 and 2015 but this is their first meeting on grass.

Gulbis vs Fritz or Zverev: Gulbis is back on track after a career freefall which saw the Latvian lose to players ranked outside the top 400.

Del Potro vs Paire: Paire won their one meeting in Rome 64 76 five years ago.

Ebden vs Simon: It’s ATP no 53 vs 51 and you wouldn’t know it but the higher ranked Ebden leads the h2h 2-0, with a win last year in Miami and seven years ago in Shanghai, 76 and 75 in the third.

Vesely vs Fognini: Fog is 3-0 vs the lefty Czech including a straight set schooling last year at Wimbledon.

Nadal vs deMinaur: no. 1 vs 80, veteran super champion vs 19 year old wonder boy. The Demon backs down to no one and surely will give Nadal all he can handle. Lleyton Hewitt knows how to motivate this kid who is a natural born fighter.

Uh, Scoop, let’s not get too carried away with Gulbis. I’m happy to see him get into the 3rd rd of Wimby, but beating the Brit WC Clarke in 5 sets in the first round and then beating Dzhumur in 5 in the second round means one thing, Fritz or Zverev will put a hurting on Gulbis in the next round.

Now Baghdatis has been most impressive, beating Thiem in Rd 1 and losing 8-5 in fifth set against Kachanov. Big match for Qball. He should beat Monfils, but he’s 0-2 against the Frenchman who usually toys with clumsier players like Qball.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 5, 2018 at 10:43 pm

Dan last year Gulbis beat Del Potro at Wimbledon. And Dzumhur just won a title on grass. Gulbis is surging. We talk about the downward spiral of Sock but Sock is still ranked in the top 25. Gulbis crashed to like 400 something from the top ten. The fall of Gulbis was far more tragic than Sock. So with Gulbis battling back there is still hope for Sock, though it looks so bleak at this moment.

  • Jackson · July 6, 2018 at 12:56 am

Jack Sock is No. 150 in The Race for this year, one spot ahead of Filip Peliwo. He’s coasting on the points he got from Paris and WTF at the end of last year but once those drop off, it’s back to Challengers for him.

  • Dan Markowitz · July 6, 2018 at 3:50 am

Yes, but Gulbis’ fall was due to injury at first while Sock has been relatively healthy. Plus Gulbis hit the skids at 28-29 while Sock is only 25.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 8:05 am

Jackson, Sock still has time to jump start his career from now until November, he can suddenly spark a win streak and get back to normal. Spadea lost 21 matches in a row and somehow managed to right the sunken ship. Sock is a sinking ship right now but he can still sail the seas again.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 8:07 am

maybe Sock’s injury is to his heart, maybe the break up with his gf has taken something out of him. Dan did Spadea ever go into detail about what caused him to go into that 21 match losing streak funk? These things don’t just happen, something or some series of events conspire to wound a player’s confidence.

  • Dan Markowitz · July 6, 2018 at 9:19 am

I think with Spadea it happened right after he made the Olympic team in Sydney and he had been 18 in the world and he just started losing. There was probably–although Vince wouldn’t admit it–a lot of denial happening, like I should be getting to a slam semis (he’d just gotten to a slam quarters) and I’m losing in the first round of all these tournaments.

How about Fritz getting blitzed after going up two sets to one yesterday against Zverev.

This is how women’s tennis drives me crazy. I get on the Keys’ bandwagon and then she loses to Rodina? I’ve barely heard of Rodina. She’s 120 in the world. How can Keys lose to someone like this?

  • Dan Markowitz · July 6, 2018 at 9:22 am

Geez, I see Jonathan Erlich’s still in the draw. The dude’s 41. We’re going to see a male doubles player play into his 50’s.

  • catherine · July 6, 2018 at 9:43 am

Only 3 of the top 10 women remain in the draw. Not sure what to make of that – except Serena William’s seeding seems pretty irrelevant now.

    Maybe it’s the weather 🙂

Here’s a lesson Dan – don’t get on any player’s bandwagon in the WTA.

  • catherine · July 6, 2018 at 10:07 am

Naomi Osaka or Camilla Giorgi will win Wimbledon 2018.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 10:50 am

Keys is too nice, too predictable and lacks variety, she just fires away on everything. She seems too nice, too one dimensional tactics wise. The great players have a ruthlessness and as Chrissie Evert just said about Serena, she actually called her “greedy.”

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 10:51 am

Catherine, have you been drinking today? 🙂

  • Hartt · July 6, 2018 at 10:58 am

Keys is very inconsistent. She often makes terrible decisions on the court. I got off her bandwagon years ago, despite the way the American commies keep hyping her.

My two picks on the women’s side – Kvitova and Muguruza – are out, so I will go with Serena at this point.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 6, 2018 at 11:09 am

How about suspended matches changing this men’s draw. Cilic and Fritz were on their way to wins. Fritz was barely on the court today after outplaying Sascha.

Just shows you how on any given day some players are on their game. A day later, it can easily be reversed.

I am sticking to my guns and saying Cilic would have won it all except for the misfortune of that match being stopped.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 6, 2018 at 11:20 am

Gulbis could be a tricky opponent for Sascha. Plus there’s the Latvia-Russia dynamic between them. Don’t be surprised to see the Russian go down.

  • catherine · July 6, 2018 at 11:20 am

    Scoop – I think I’ve got heatstroke 🙂

  • catherine · July 6, 2018 at 11:23 am

Duke – who are you talking about ? There’s no Russian in that match.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 11:23 am

Good points about the suspended matches and don’t forget Monfils fell and froze today’s match at a set and 22 down to Querrey and he went off court for ten minutes of treatment and then came back out and dominated the match. These matches being halted and then started later or the next day prove a pattern.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 6, 2018 at 11:32 am

My goodness, Serena is hitting harder than ever before. Does anyone else feel the same? She just blew Kiki off the court those last few games.

Interesting how both Williams sisters are playing Kiki at the same time.

Meanwhile Mannarino just wins matches. As Scoop would put it, he is one of the greats of this era.

  • catherine · July 6, 2018 at 12:20 pm

Venus out, Vekic wins, Julia G and Strycova battle for 3 hours before Julia wins. Serena about to bt Kiki.

I think this means out of the top 10 only 2 now survive.

This is the first year Julia has gone past the first round at W’don since 2011.

  • catherine · July 6, 2018 at 12:51 pm

Hartt – you’d have liked the Julia/Strycova match I think – apparently S did a fair bit of serving and volleying. I only wish I’d seen it. No highlights needless to say.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 12:54 pm

Serena i s looking very good, very powerful, serve is as good as ever, Chrissie says she thinks Serena is 75% of her best form which may be enough to win this title. Big win for Serena, Venus showed tremendous heart and drive to force Bertens to 8-6 in the third after being down a set and a break.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 6, 2018 at 12:56 pm

The top seed in doubles Marach and Pavic are down 14 in the fifth to a hodge podge team of Delbonis and Varela.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 6, 2018 at 5:10 pm

Scoop, who do you like in Ramirez v. O’Connor? I think dumping Freddie Roach was a great move. The guy is a leech and a bad influence. I like Ramirez in front of the home crowd. He’s a rising star.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 6, 2018 at 9:03 pm

    Q. Back to the scheduling. One of the matches that for me personally I thought was surprising being on Court 1 was Zverev versus Fritz today. Fabio Fognini at the French Open was complaining that the NextGen guys are getting court boosts at major tournaments. He was not very happy with that kind of notion, I won’t use his words. Wondering what your thoughts on that is and whether they’ve earned that right to be playing on Centre or 1 above three-time champions like yourself?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I mean, Fabio is my generation, born ’87. Obviously it’s hard for him to deal with the fact that he’s not young any more (smiling). Maybe we should make our own PresentGen, CurrentGen, or OldGen tour.

Jokes aside, I don’t see it as necessarily a wrong, so to say, bad decision from ATP to kind of promote the young players. I mean, the end of the day, I had this conversation with you guys for so many years, we don’t have new faces on the tour. It’s been the dominance of the four guys. You want to see new players.

Everybody was saying that the time is going to come, so it came. Now we have Zverev, Coric, Thiem that has been around, a couple other players. They deserve the attention. I mean, they’re trying to also make them big stars.

I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing. Obviously when you are affected by that, then obviously you might dislike that a little bit. In general, if you see it, it’s good for sport. Why not promoting other players than maybe the big four guys that have been dominant on the tour. I think it’s pretty good thing.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 2:47 am

There are virtually no highlights at all available for W’don this year – a move motivated entirely by greed, commercially understandable but bad for publicising and promoting the game among casual viewers and people who can’t follow any other way for various reasons.

Luckily I’ve watched a lot of tennis in my life and I also catch up via smaller tournaments, which often get good coverage, so I’m not too bothered, I know the players and I’m familiar with the game, but the more pirating the better. I’m all for breaking monopolies.

  • Jg · July 7, 2018 at 8:04 am

Agree, there is a void with no highlights and ESPN has changed it up with that paid for streaming unless you sign up for the 7 day free trial, which everyone is doing and dropping after 7, I guess they hope most forget to drop after the 7

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 8:07 am

Kasatkina bts Barty in SS. Daria served only 7 dfs.

I don’t know about Ashleigh – I wonder if she has the right build for tennis, or whether it’s a mental thing. She was leading in the 1st set and then lost the plot.

    Kontaveit out.

Kevin Anderson is leading a worthy campaign to get rid of all the unnecessary plastic in tennis, from racket covers to water bottles. I’d support him on that.

  • Hartt · July 7, 2018 at 8:11 am

Dasha Kasatkina just won her match over Barty. Ash started off very strong, and Dasha was having her DF problem, but Dasha finally played better and took the first set. It was fun to watch 2 women players who both have a BH slice.

The video for my stream died in the 2nd set (and it was even a “legal” one for a change), so I did not see the rest of the match. Apparently Ash’s level dropped. In any case, Dasha got the win, much to my delight. She made her seeding, which is better than a lot of the women!

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 8:19 am

Joe – yes I’m sure ESPN are banking on inertia selling – people just forget and ESPN has snapped up another unwilling customer. Someone commented on Youtube that the lack of highlights only encourages the idea of tennis as just for the rich – and I can see the point because Youtube is followed in countries where many people are poor.

Something that baffles me – you can see 15 mins of a stupid boring press conference and not a second of the actual match.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 8:25 am

Hartt- I can see slice making a big comeback – maybe everyone’s been listening to Scoop 🙂

As I said above I have reservations about Ashleigh – she’s not making the progress you’d expect.

  • Hartt · July 7, 2018 at 8:31 am

Good for Kevin Anderson and his campaign against plastic.

  • Hartt · July 7, 2018 at 9:12 am

Milos had to finish his match against Dennis Novak today. Yesterday he was off, not making easy shots and getting very frustrated. Today was the exact opposite – Milos was at his best. He served well, but also returned very well, was effective at the net and made some terrific DTL winners. The commies seemed very surprised at the difference and thought that this Milos had a good chance at winning the title.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 10:32 am

I don’t believe it. I just don’t. Scoop will be thrilled.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 10:38 am

Nine of the WTA top ten seeds are out before the second week. I can’t think of any explanation at all.
    Serena will cruise this.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 7, 2018 at 11:25 am

I think it’s a shrewd move but not a good one for fans to protect the highlights. People tend to watch highlights and skip the entire match or skip buying tickets to see it live. Blacking out highlights is good for the bottom line of the tournament and TV ratings and advertisers.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 7, 2018 at 11:27 am

Barty will be fine, she is in position to contend for majors, one of these majors she will put it all together. Not this time though.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 7, 2018 at 11:32 am

Hsieh beating Halep is another one of those tennis miracles, from 25 down in third and looking spent, she wins 86. Hsieh is one of the most amazing players, she even awes Chrissie Evert who has seen it all. Evert praises Hsieh more than any other player, even Fed and Serena. Hsieh is more amazing, she is slightly built and plays a style that no one else ever has. Then she signs more autographs and takes more photos for fans on center court than Maria or Serena do all summer. She does this with her fans at all tournaments win or lose. She’s just an amazing player and a true champion. As expected Rafa manhandled the kid deMinaur who managed to put up a fight despite his strings popping three times in the match. Rafa must be really hitting the ball with a lot of velocity right now.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 7, 2018 at 11:57 am

Wimbledon is smart to protect its assets and not show highlights or much coverage. That’s why its ratings suck and the World Cup is destroying it.

Cibulkova showed Wimby what fools they were not to seed her with this run. She is proving her detractors wrong.

Osaka was pulverized by Kerber in a horrible effort and bad advert for women’s tennis.

I really believe the seeds tumbling is due to Serena’s presence. Subconsciously, the other women know they cannot compete and they fall apart being mentally fragile in Serena’s wake.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 7, 2018 at 11:59 am

Tiafoe is up two sets on Khachanov and is about to make the breakthrough we as U.S.fans so deserve.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 12:23 pm

I honestly don’t think highlights on Youtube have any effect on ticket sales, and who would watch highlights when they might have the opportunity to watch the whole match ?

Many people who watch highlights don’t live anywhere near where the tournament is played. They live in all sorts of different countries. I think it’s a silly selfish move and just driven by commercial greed. But what isn’t ? The AO by the way had good highlights and I doubt the tournament suffered much. Probably the opposite.

I think Angie has her eye on the Rosewater dish. Very confident win.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 7, 2018 at 1:37 pm

Looks like Tiafoe is falling apart. Pity he may not have what it takes.

Catherine, I agree SW19 is being stodgy and difficult about highlights. How British.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 2:02 pm

The women’s draw next week isn’t going to set the Thames on fire but I’m not sure I think the mass exodus of seeds is down to Serena’s presence. It’s something more complicated.

Women players do too much, a lot of stuff which is only distantly related to their performance on court. They’re forever being marketed, displayed, dressed up, interviewed, followed on social media, pressured to have a presence everywhere, – be available, be distant, be sexy, be ‘athletes’. I’m surprised they have a moment to play tennis with all these distracting and peripheral activities.

We can’t go back and dis-invent Twitter and Facebook etc but I think the WTA could remove its sticky fingers from the pie and stop behaving as if every single thing a player does is noteworthy and can be used to sell the game. I once heard some advertising genius refer to Carling Bassett as a ‘marketing mantel’, as if that’s all she was. Not surprising she retired early.

Men players don’t have these problems. Life is a lot simpler. ‘See ball, hit ball’ and then go out and lead their own lives.

There’s a lot of rubbish associated with women’s tennis and I blame the WTA. I always have, even back in the day when it was just a set of initials. Too many people running around getting paid for doing nothing.

Playing pro tennis at a high level is a difficult job.
The pressure to be always in the limelight doesn’t make it easier.

Just my thoughts. Oh, and some people prepared for Wimbledon sensibly and some people didn’t. They know who they are.

  • catherine · July 7, 2018 at 2:08 pm

Duke – it’s not Wimbledon so much, it’s IMG who have locked up highlights I believe – not particularly ‘British’. They were ok last year as far as I recall. RG this year were bad – 2 mins max.

  • Hartt · July 7, 2018 at 2:25 pm

Scoop, Evert (before today) called Hsieh a “club player,” and got a tremendous amount of grief for her comment. Presumably she has changed her mind about that.

  • Hartt · July 7, 2018 at 2:29 pm

Talk about a shocker, Gulbis beat Sascha, including taking the fifth set 6-0. Ernie played surprisingly well, but Sascha was far from his best. And then just seemed to give up in that last set.

  • Tom Sawyer · July 7, 2018 at 2:36 pm

Spot on Catherine. Social media impact to athletes in general is more negative than positive. Certainly there are positive examples but overall I am not a fan of the impact. One of my favorite players is Cibulkova (yes, ok, I have a crush too) but she is such a warrior and her passion for tennis and competing really shows through. That’s what tennis players need more of and less concern for their ‘brand’ or entourage. And congrats Hseih!

  • Tom Sawyer · July 7, 2018 at 2:48 pm

Do you guys see Djoker blowing kisses and sticking out his tongue at crowd? He is so irritated the crowd is going for the home-country player. Grow up. Novak wants to be adored the same way Fed is, but it will never happen, get over it. Not a Novak fan but I appreciate he is top 3 all-time and had one of the best years of any player ever. And I love that he is coming back well…making things more interesting.

  • Hartt · July 7, 2018 at 4:47 pm

Kei Nishikori won over Nick Kyrgios in SS. As Darren Cahill said, Kei was the better player and wanted it more. It’s great to see him back playing well.

The officials must have been super relieved that the match finished just in time in terms of the light.

  • Dan Markowitz · July 7, 2018 at 5:22 pm

Gulbis!!!! Huge win. Shows you that Zverev and Kyrgios, they’re great in smaller tournaments, Masters 2 out of 3, but neither has showed up yet at a slam.

Can’t blame the Djoker for wanting to be loved. It’s a natural human emotion. But with Tiafoe falling apart in the 4th and 5th sets against Kachanov, maybe slams aren’t child’s play and the days of the teens and young 20’s player going deep in one is all over and this seems true even in the women’s game for the most part.
