Delray Beach Open Notes

sockBy Scoop Malinowski

Lots to tell you today at the Delray Beach Open…

Juan Martin Del Potro postponed his 1 pm press conference till tomorrow at 11 in order to practice with Taylor Fritz who he first hit with two years ago in Miami.

Guess which player in one of the draws is a lifetime 4-0 vs Pete Sampras including one singles win?

Donald Young spoke to media about the Ryan Harrison incident and said he learned from the experience and is moving forward. Young was hitting with Nick Monroe and an unidentified player.

Radu Albot hit twice, with Ivo Karlovic then Steve Johnson. Johnson was chatty, talking to himself on overheads “oh theres sun here.” Steve played indoors in NY last week.

Jared Donaldson hit with Stefan Kozlov who lost in qualies to Ramanathan and is in dubs with Fritz. Kozlov bulked up and is using babolat now not Head. Kozlov tossed his racquet a few times, still mired in a slump. Hes being coached again by Stan Boster and Dan a Russian guy.

An obserever of last weeks Kyrgios Sock practice on Friday was stunned by how relaxed it was. Sock was playing his music list and both threw a football around with a lot of laughs. Not the most professional practice but Sock and Nick love to have fun and keep it loose.

Leander Paes coach Sanjay Singh said his man will play mixed doubles again in the rest of the three majors after missing Melbourne mixed, but he wouldnt name the mystery partner.

Max Mirnyi was practicing with his partner Philip Oswald at night. They just won NY Open. Max still has passion, while working on backhand returns from ad court he yelled “cmon Beast” after making good contact returns. When a boy asked for one of his Wilson racquets on a break, Max turned and asked the boy, “what if Im in a long match and I need the racquet back? Where will you be?” Then Max offered to take a photo with the boy named Shane from Toronto.

Scoop, that’s easy everyone knows Paes owned Pistol Pete.

Interesting that Scoop is the only one reporting that Donald Young knows he screwed up. What did he say exactly? Does he know how wrong it was to lie like this?

Sandgren advances in Rio to face Fognini. They have never met.

Scoop how about the withdrawals. Kevin Anderson lives in Delray and couldn’t be bothered after conquering NYC. He has his sights set on Acapulco.

    I have Gojowyk trouncing Lacko.

Darian King has some talent but he’s not an ATP player.

Check out the Challenger field in Bergamo – about three players I have heard of – Igor Sisjling, Luca Vanni and maybe one other.

Kokkanakis is in Mexico grinding it out. Wonder if he is truly a top-100 player or not.

    Duke,

I think you have to be smart if you’re KevAnd. He just had four matches all go deep into third sets. He’s not 25 anymore. I don’t have a problem with him dropping out of Delray.

These tennis players are big dudes. Scoop and I walked past DY yesterday and the guy is built like an NFL cornerback. Today in matches, Dr. Ivo, Ozzie and Raonic all play back to back to back on center court. You think there;s going to be a lot of aces hit.

I was having yogurt around 9 pm last night when Big Foe turned up after his first round night match win against Eden, 6-2 in third, and I got Big Foe to sign my son’s tennis cap and the guy is like 6-1 or so and chiseled. He’s got to play Delpo or Chardy next.

Good opening day, 11 am match today, between Opelka and Harry. I’m going to try to talk to Harry today afterward and see what he has to say.

Chung yesterday was spectacular in beating Norris 6-1 in the third after dropping the first set. He could very well win this event after not playing since AO. The guy has legs the size of Michael Chang’s but longer and he takes no prisoners. Norris with success was hitting a heavy top spin forehand eliciting mistakes on Chung’s backhand in the first set, but Chung just grinded and out hit the young Brit, who has leaped ahead of his compatriot and who I liked last year when he beat Gulbis, Liam Broady.

The Koz practicing with Donaldson has a pair of huge legs on him too. One wonders how these players bulk up so quickly or at least in the Koz’s case. Opelka was practicing with Shapovalov, who made a joke about his double’s partner’s no frills attire yesterday after their first round doubles win, Peter Polansky. Here’s Shapovalov decked out in Nike gear and Polansky apparently with no sponsor, wearing like Target tennis gear.

Dropouts galore in Delray but today is a blockbuster. Harrison vs a desperate Opelka. Fritz vs Sam. Slumping Steve Johnson vs Basilashvili. Albot vs Isner. Both Paes Purav and Mirnyi Oswald teams in action. I expect a full house.

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 20, 2018 at 11:08 am

Expect a full house? In Delray? Let’s hope it is half full.

Dan why ask Harrison anything. We know he is telling the truth. DY was the one caught lying. Harry handled that accusation better than me since I would have tried to get DY suspended.

Anyone watching Arnaboldi and Sakharov from Italy?

  • Duke Carnoustie · February 20, 2018 at 1:49 pm

Isner gets revenge over Albot! Gojo downs Lacko!

The big one is Opelka knocking out Harrison. No doubt Ryan was in no mood to speak after that and had a tantrum.

Opelka v. Sock could be your blockbuster match of the tournament along with another DelPo-Tiafoe matchup if that materializes.

It’s a shame Mannarino didn’t show. The event loses a bit without him.
