Biofile: Scott Lipsky Interview

The veteran American champion retired from professional tennis yesterday.  Scott, a standout NCAA champion at Stanford, won a Grand Slam mixed title and sixteen ATP doubles titles during his pro career which lasted almost two decades. Here is a Biofile I did with Scott a few years ago…

By Scoop Malinowski

Status: 2011 French Open Mixed-Doubles Champion. Winner of sixteen career ATP doubles titles.

Height: 6’1” Weight: 175 lbs.

DOB: August 14, 1981 in Merrick, N.Y.

First tennis memory: I’d say hitting balls at the back of the house when I was five.

Tennis inspiration: My favorite player was Pete Sampras.

Nicknames: My nickname is Lipper.

Last book read: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

Favorite movies: Any comedy.

Pre-match feeling: I don’t really think about much. Getting ready to play. Just go out there and just do my thing.

Favorite meal: Pasta.

Favorite ice cream flavor: Chocolate.

Current car: A red Jeep.

First job: This is my only job.

Greatest sports moment: Winning the French Open Mixed-Doubles Title with Casey Dellacqua over Katarina Srebotnik & Nenad Zimonjic. You watch these matches on television, and you wish that someday you can be there. To be on this stage playing a Grand Slam final, and to come out with a win, and to say now for the rest of my life that I’m a Grand Slam champion, it’s amazing.

Most painful moment: Losing in the finals of NCAA doubles. We lost to a team from Auburn.

Favorite tournament: Wimbledon.

Closest tennis friends: Any of the Americans.

Funniest player encountered: Jordan Kerr because he says a lot of stupid things [smiles].

Embarrassing tennis memory: Can’t think of any. Never lost love and love.

Best you’ve ever felt on-court: I played a tournament in Barcelona  and we beat all the good teams. We beat the Bryans (who were on a 10-match win streak) and we beat Jurgen Melzer & Nenad Zimonjic, as well as Max Mirnyi & Daniel Nestor. Yeah, those were good matches.

Strangest match: I played a match in Kuala Lumpur. We won 21-19 in the third set tie-break against Santiago Gonzalez & Travis Rettemaier.

Favorite players to watch: Roger Federer … and I like watching Grigor Dimitrov. He plays a lot like Federer.

Favorite sport outside tennis: Football.

Funny tennis memory: I got one from Wimbledon. The baseline umpire fell asleep during the match [smiles].

Favorite TV show: Seinfeld.

Hobbies/interests: I like to watch sports on TV and go to sporting events.

People qualities most admired: Sense of humor.

Education: Stanford University.

Sounds like a pretty vanilla guy. Favorite donut? One with a hole in it.

Lipsky is low key but is a wealth of information and anecdotes and insights. He’s been on the tour for two decades playing all the same tournaments as the legends. He’s not one to seek attention or blow his trumpet but I’ve been lucky to have had many conversations with him for the last five years.

Guess you’re saving all the good stuff for Playing Scott Lipsky book????

Scott could write a very good book, I can promise you that. I suggested he consider it. He’s played all the greats in doubles and basically lived with them on the Tour for fifteen years. He’s seen a lot and knows a lot. Scott won 266 ATP doubles matches. Not bad at all.
