Alexandra Stevenson Update

The former Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson is still out there grinding her way through low level pro tournaments.

This week she played qualies in Honolulu, her eighth tournament of the year. Now 37, Stevenson lost her first round quali match to Alyssa Tobita of America, 61 64. Tobita is a 22 year old with no WTA points. Tobita just finished her career at University of Oregon, going 18-11 in singles in her senior year.

Honolulu is a $60,000 ITF event with Nao Hibino as the top seed. Hibino was 56 in the world in 2016 but is now ranked 119.

Stevenson is currently ranked 849 in the world.

In case you’re wondering, Michelle Larcher De Brito, now 25, has fallen to 753 in the world. She hasn’t played a tournament since March when she lost to Salome Devidze in Tampa.

Late last year Michelle opened up a dog boarding facility for traveling pet owners in Bradenton called www.Barksbnb.com.

Fascinating Stevenson would still be out there trying to play pro tennis at 37. She must feel she’s Serena-like. Is it sad or just the love of the game for her. She had so many interests besides Tennis when she was younger. Maybe she still pursued them, but one wonders how she supports herself. Tennis stunts some pros in that they never move on to other pursuits. One would think if she can’t even come close to winning an ITFcwualies match it’d be time to face the music and realize she was a one hit wonder.

Stevenson had a good win in three sets last week beating Dominique Schaefer who I saw play at Eddie Herr five years ago, a pusher creative type but making no impact on pro level. Still a good win for Stevenson, any win is a good win.
