Player Biofile Chelsea Smithback

CS
College Team: Soph on St. Petersburg College Lady Titans junior college tennis team. Undefeated so far.

First Tennis Memory: “Playing a club sort of tournament in Germany.”

Inspirations: “John Isner, when he played the incredibly long match. And I think Serena Williams. Just comebacks are a huge inspiration as well.”

Racquet You Use: “Babolat.”

Shoes: “Wilson.”

Greatest Tennis Moment: “Hmm, good question, winning States maybe (Florida). (Score?) In finals, 60 62.”

Most Painful Tennis Moment: “When I had a match and I played absolutely horrible. I could have easily gotten it but just absolutely horribly played. Yeah, that hurts. (Where?) Home match. One of our first matches on the college team and it just all went bad.”

Why Do You Love Playing Tennis: “Because it’s fun actually. It’s fun to like hit the ball, to really try to strategize, try to figure out the points, try to get in the other girl’s head. Yeah [smiles].”

Funny Tennis Memory: “If you go to Wats You Tube, watch those, it’s actually EuroSport, a German thing. But it’s like they hit the ball between their legs and the ball goes in. Things like that, pretty funny.”

Strangest Match: “Somebody I was playing with once hit a bird. Maybe that.”

First Famous Player You Met Or Encountered: “Jack Sock I think. Actually right here on that court. Last year (in Delray Beach).”

Favorite Tennis Book: “Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert.”

Place of Birth: Wuerzburg, Germany.
