Sock and Kudla are talented but their results are so strange. Good to see Harrison score a big win over Isner 64 64 in Sydney. Blake vs. DY should be interesting. Nostradmus could not pick that unpredictable match, anything can happen and probably will.

Tough one for Dancevic. Like you said he just ran into a hot player.

    Congrats to Rampras!

Klahn is just a great player. I hope he goes far.

Isner is apparently has a bad knee bruise and is seriously considering withdrawing from the Australian Open. From what I’ve read, it doesn’t sound like he expects to play.

It is, Scoop. Ferromagnetic practically came out of his sneaks hitting those forehands against Reynolds, but Bobby slayed him in the end. Doesn’t look very promising for Kudla. He’s talented, but he’s been out there for a couple of years now without much positive results.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 9, 2013 at 8:04 pm

Hope Dustin Brown makes main draw and gets a big match for first round. If you have never seen him play, you will love his style. Brands is very good player who impressed Dan at Delray two years ago. SO many talented player out there. Jonathan Eyserric won first round of qualies, he showed promise at FO about four years ago and promptly disappeared but he’s still grinding.

I saw that Mitch, but he looked good in Hopman Cup I did not see him take a fall to hurt the knee. Hope he’s okay, he’ll be needed for Davis Cup.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 9, 2013 at 8:06 pm

    Kudla’s results have been orindary.

  • Mitch · January 10, 2013 at 9:04 am

Isner is out. I wonder if any Americans will make it past the 3rd round.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 10, 2013 at 10:14 am

No faith in Querrey and Harrison, Mitch? A surprise run by Rhyne Williams?

  • Mitch · January 10, 2013 at 2:57 pm

I have faith that Querrey will under-perform as he usually does in slams. Harrison is unseeded, so who knows what to expect for him.

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 6:00 am

Dolgo vs. Monfils in the first round should be a flashy if error laden match.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 9:07 am

Hewitt vs. Tips will be a war.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 9:08 am

Good straight set win for Young, he’s off to a great start so far this year. Harrison with a dud vs. Benneteau in Sydney QF. Stephens into the SF after beating Lauren Davis. Tomic is red hot now, seven wins this year counting all three singles wins in Hopman Cup.

Looks like we might get a Gasquet/Haas OHBH battle down the road.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 9:31 am

Haas is a great player who never gets a mention in that best-player-to-never-win-a-slam discussion. #2 in the world, long career, some big wins, overcoming injury. I like Gasquet in that match though.

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 9:48 am

Scoop, I think Haas does get mentioned ALOT for slamless GOAT. It’s either him or Nalby and some say Rios. 🙂

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 9:51 am

Would be nice for Rochus to beat Ferrer just so he can play Dr.Ivo in the next round.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 11:05 am

Todd Martin was 2-0 vs. Rios and in more major finals.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 11:06 am

Rochus has no chance to even win a set vs. Ferrer. Oli is in a bad slump, he could be at the end.

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 11:20 am

“Rochus has no chance to even win a set vs. Ferrer. Oli is in a bad slump, he could be at the end.”

    Would be nice though.

And Todd Martin had a nice serve but he’s well below Pioline & others. There are odd h2h stats all over tennis.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 11:39 am

Haas 3-1 career head to head vs. Martin, though Todd won their final meeting in straight sets.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 11:40 am

Rochus seemed finished two years ago, it’s almost miracle he’s lasted this far. He has edged out so many close hard fought matches in the last two years. Ferrer’s style is all wrong for him.

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 11:49 am

    O. Rochus won over 4 million bucks at 5’5″.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 11, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Just going to say, Haas does get mentioned a lot in the best player never to win slam. And when you said, OHBH, I thought you were referring to Over the Hill Backward Hat wearers, but Gasquet doesn’t wear hat backwards does he?

Besides Wimbledon a couple of years ago, Tomic has been great in Australia, and poor everywhere else. Who do you like to get into Aussie Main Draw, Johnson or Sweeting?

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 3:04 pm

If Gasquet drinks three glasses of OJ will you call him fat too?

And bravo on rephrasing my Haas comments. Well done!

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Big big respect for Rochus, he’s one of my favorites, fights so hard on every ball like it’s MP, he has to being like a featherweight brawling with these hwts. There was a guy from the Philippines named Felicisimo Ampon who was under 5 ft tall and could play with and even take down some of the best in the Emerson era. They said he was quicker than quick. WOuld love to see a film on him.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 4:14 pm

I like Johnson to make it.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 11, 2013 at 4:14 pm

    Overthehill backward hat wearers HAHA

  • Dan markowitz · January 11, 2013 at 5:37 pm

    Steve,

Your words are the gospel. Think of Blake’s plight. He flies all the way to Australia to play two matches, probably wins $500 and then he has to fly home. I don’t remember him playing warmup event.

I have a friend who pointed out how well the young American women are doing and how with Sloan, Keys and Laura Davis, you have three talented and attractive women, which means more in women’s tennis. It’s great to be talented, but if you look like a Sabatini or Sharapova, then the heads turn. Keys is so big and strong for 17. She looks like a more fearsome Alexandra Stevenson.

  • Steve · January 11, 2013 at 5:42 pm

Rochus’ record is good to looks at. He owned lesser players like Spadea.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 12, 2013 at 10:02 am

It’s Johnson, Scoop, and Rajeev Ram, 11-9 in the third set. These are the only two men USA qualifiers. Donald Young went down in the third to Jaime Baker. Alas, DYoung can’t get into the first major of the year.

How many majors do you think DY will get into this year?

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 12, 2013 at 5:20 pm

Johnson is the real deal, he’s a winner and this is an excellent result for him. Dy should handle the Jamie Bakers of the ATP.
