Memphis Notes

By Amanda H. LeMay

Just a few notes about today’s men’s matches in Memphis. American Sam Querrey takes on big hitting Kevin Anderson in what should be a cracker of a match. It will be interesting to see what Brad Gilbert is bringing to Sam’s game since this is the first tournament they have spent together. At the same time on a side court Jurgen Melzer will play Ivan Dodig who knocked off the #8 seed Bernard Tomic. Melzer has struggled of late but a win here could set up a possible show down with #1 seed John Isner. Isner takes on fellow American Donald Young in the night headliner. It’s a big test for Young as he has not done well previously against the higher ranked Americans. Also in action is Ryan Harrison who struggled to beat American wildcard Jack Sock. He will play Olivier Rochus of Belgium who scored the upset win over Alex Bogomolov Jr, the 5th seed. The winner of this match will get the pleasure of possibly playing red hot Milos Raonic in the quarters. Milos served up 15 aces and won 84% of his first serve points in his win over Ernests Gulbis in the late night session Wednesday. Sergiy Stakhovsky will be his next opponent. Xavier Malisse, who got his first win in 9 tries over Andy Roddick yesterday, plays Benjamin Becker of Germany and the #3 seed Radek Stepanek takes on Ryan Sweeting. All quarter final matches will be played on Friday.

Excellent marquee matchups, Isner should go all the way now, it will be him or Raonic, looking forward to see that one. I like Harrison over Rochus but Rochus has so much experience, great match. Isner vs DY – I remember at the Davis Cup final press conf in Portland Isner and DY were sitting right behind us in the next row, they were in town as practice partners for the team, they seemed friendly. Steps vs Sweeting, Becker vs. X Man, these are good matchups.

Nice to read all this syruppy stuff about Memphis, but theres an actual tournament going on..Roddick(gonna fall further in the rankings) loses in 2 to the Xman, Ryan (BLUFF)Harrison loses to little Rochus on indoor hard in 2…Shouldnt we discuss that?

Harold, I didn’t see it but Rochus beating Harrison is not a shock, Rochus is having a strong year, he is winning a lot of close matches and his confidence must be high. He is very smart, very experienced and a TREMENDOUS fighter, fights tooth and nail on every ball like it’s match point and his life is on the line. Seriously, you gotta watch this guy live if you can, how hard he still fights is incredible. Not surprised at all he snuck by Harrison. Isner vs. Raonic is going to be tremendous.
