Iga Confident Before Coco Showdown

Iga Swiatek sounds ready to administer another beatdown on Coco Gauff at French Open semis today.

A 64 62 and 61 63 winner vs Coco the last two years at French Open, Iga expressed confidence ahead of the clash of titanettes.

“My game is getting better and better every day,” Iga said at her QF press conference, a rout of Vondrousova.

Iga did give Coco a small dash of credit though. “Her mental game is a little bit better. Before it was kind of easy to crack when you were leading. She’s making progress. She’s at that age when everything goes nicely if you’re working hard. Probably every aspect of her game is better.”

One could interpret Iga’s words as being very diplomatic or carefully kind or even patronizing to the rival she has already beaten ten of eleven times.

Gauff’s only win vs Iga came last summer in Cincy 76 36 64. After the US Open Iga curiously revealed she felt she wasn’t allowed to “play freely” at Cincy or US Open last summer. Iga then beat Coco in straight sets in Beijing and Cancun (hard courts) in late 2023 and in Rome this year, 64 63.
