I’m finding this Laver Cup really boring.
Bah, to be fully honest, aside from the epic edition with Federer and Nadal, I’ve never quite managed to get fully hooked on this competition.
I struggle to get into the dynamic Europe vs World.
Seeing this euphoria from the players that, at times, you don’t even spot in the Davis Cup. Hearing complaints from players about the packed schedule, but then you have them here competing. You watch, and suddenly you’ve got Alcaraz explaining to Ruud how to play against CerĂșndolo. I don’t know, it’s weird to me.
More or less, it just doesn’t click for me or draw me in. Luckily, there are ATP, WTA, and Challenger tournaments running at the same time.
Sorry if it sounds a bit hater-ish, but that’s how I feel.
How do you all see it? Do you like it, or are you in the same boat?

Frankly even the highlights are hard to watch. It just seems like a WWF production. I would rather see struggling lower ranked players fighting for big money than a bunch of multimillionaires pretending to care about the meaningless Laver Cup. It had a decent run but it’s over.

I watched Fonseca vs. Cobolli last year, it was good and, like you, I enjoyed Fed & Rafa teaming up in the past. I have not been interested this year. I always found Agassi cringe af (Mike Agassi built amazing hand/eye thoough) and he’s captain this year and he likes to bogart the mic so I’m ducking it.
De Minaur would be better “served” taking time off and re-tooling his serve that’s holding him back in slams. He already knows how to compete, he needs a better serve. I also don’t get the tuxedos & fancy suits aspect for these photo shoots. It just seems like they are trying too hard, it’s not the World Tour Finals nor is it a film premiere. lol

No interest either Steve, World vs Europe is an awful rivalry idea. I’d prefer a big money tourn randomly picking wta atp players ranked outside 150 but inside 500. A mixed event to give fans a look at unknown players with a chance to make it big in a special event. Plus it could create new stars. I think fans are tired of Fritz, Ruud, even Zverev, Demon, etc. They all play like robots. Tennis needs new ideas and new innovations. Laver Cup was a fair idea that unfortunately fizzled out. Or as some would say, Jumped the shark.

No offense to Ruud, Deminaur, Fritz, Cerundolo, even Tien, but they don’t really move the needle. In a sense they are all overexposed already. I think overexposing players with too many interviews is a disservice, it hurts their mystiques and auras.

Jason on x: The Laver Cup could have been huge for tennis if they delivered on the promises they made.
Imagine every year the event taking place in countries without any notable professional events.
Imagine tens of thousands of fans who would never get the chance to see the biggest tennis stars up close being able to.
Imagine the likes of Philippines, Kenya, Albania etc. all hosting the event.
Instead they chose greed in picking the countries, cities and venues where they could charge extortionate prices to fans.
What was sold to fans as something to grow the game and putting fans first was nothing but a lie.
For that reason alone I hope this event fails and gets cancelled for good.

I think you asked out loud last year “Why isn’t Wawrinka invited to play the Laver Cup?” I would have tuned in for that but I guess The Stanimal would prefer to play real tournaments anyways.

This year would have been most appropriate. I do wonder if there is some love/hate simmering between Federer and Stan?

Roger Federer has ownership in the Laver Cup. I think he controls the location and participating players.

NW, Yes my understanding is RF co-owns it with his manager Tony Godsick. And both are very involved in all decisions. I think they miscalculated the value of the World vs Europe value and how tennis fans would respond to it.

Surely Anna Wintour would support a Laver Cup in Nigeria or Manila and sit courtside.

Honestly I more enjoy the energy and determination and will at the Elizebeth Moore Sarasota Open ATP Challenger https://www.tennis-prose.com/articles/is-sinner-a-liability-or-asset-for-atp-world-tour/

The rivalry point is the heart of it for me. When Team Europe win again, as they did this year, the Europe against World framing needs more history behind it to feel like it matters. A captains’ draft, with players picked across both sides, might give it the edge the calendar complaints never will. Would a draft format make you watch more, or is the calendar clash the bigger problem?

Netsports, thank you for your comments. I just don’t believe in or buy the world vs europe rivalry. It’s nothing but a manufactured business phony rivalry created to make profits. It has no soul, no history, no true emotions, nothing, unlike the electric Ryder Cup. I think the whole thing needs to be trashed and reconstructed with a totally new format. Times change, tennis evolves, there would be no shame in trashing the original current format. It was sort of fun for a while and it had its moments but it’s dead now.

When I see it, Laver Cup looks like an imitation, like Federer and Godsick told everyone, Hey, just act like we’re copying Ryder Cup and the fans will eat it up just like they do Ryder Cup. But the acting looks faked, forced, contrived, scripted, and not natural. Sorry, I see so much real hard fought authentic life and death tennis for 30 years, Laver Cup just looks awful in comparison. Just telling it like I see it.
