Richard Gasquet was a surprise winner in Auckland in January, reeling off five wins to snatch the title with a stunning performance vs Cam Norrie in the final 46 64 64. The big win and 16th career title vaulted the 36 year old back into the top 45.
But since that astounding triumph, Gasquet has lost his stride. In the first round at Australian Open, the week after his Auckland title, Gasquet lost first round to a player he previously had never lost to in two meetings – world no. 106 Ugo Humbert 36 46 36.
And then this week Gasquet lost in the first round of Montpellier French wildcard teenager, Arthur Fils, ranked 168. Gasquet lost to the 18 year old 57 57.
Perhaps the Auckland title was the last surge of greatness from Gasquet. Or he even shocked himself with that sensational week and is struggling to believe he can ever play that level again.
