Facing Monica Seles book cover artist interview

A few years ago I discovered the stunning artwork of Miki DeGoodaboom on Instagram. It just so happened that the European artist had painted portraits of Serena and Steffi so we made a deal and her artwork was the cover of my Facing Serena Williams/Steffi Graf.

Later I found she also did a Monica Seles portrait which I saved for years with the intention of it being the cover of Facing Monica Seles book., which was finally completed this week. So far the positive feedback is that I made the right choice. Everyone has complimented the cover art including former pro Justin Gimelstob who praised DeGoodaboom’s Monica Seles art in a text message, “Love the cover.”

Here is a quick interview with the prolific artist Miki DeGoodaboom…

Question: What inspired you to make a painting of Monica Seles? Is it oil or acrylic?

Miki DeGoodaboom: I love to paint all sportsmen/women with a personal attitude and ways of moving their bodies. And she looks fierce, that is especially inspiring to me. Painted in a mix of acrylics and digital art. A first stage in acrylics, then I finish with some digital effects.

Question: Were you a fan of Monica during her tennis career?

Miki DeGoodaboom: Not really, I followed tennis from very close only when I lived in Germany and was fan of Steffi and Boris. I simply love to paint professional sporters, because of the wonderful movements. I am not always fan of the ones I paint, just love to paint them.

Question: What country are you from? Who are your favorite artists? What art education do you have?

Mike DeGoodaboom: Was born in France, lived most of my adult life in Germany, live now in Spain.
Love Van Gogh and Marc Chagall. No art education, self taught…not friend of teachers, especially in art, much too personal, cannot accept a teacher telling me how to paint [smiles]. I am in fact a mathematician, this was my profession before I dedicated myself completely to art, twenty years ago.

“We all know that Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth at least the truth that is given us to understand. The artist must know the manner whereby to convince others of the truthfulness of his lies.” -Pablo Picasso

“We have art in order not to die of the truth.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
