Did Su-Wei Hsieh Silently Retire?

Former WTA world no. 1 doubles star Su-Wei Hsieh last played a WTA match at the WTA Tour Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico in November 2021. She and partner Elise Mertens were defeated in the finals by the Czech Republic duo of Barbora Krejcikova and Katarina Siniakova 63 63.

Strangely, Hsieh did not play one single match in all of 2022. Adding to the intrigue, Hsieh did not retire from pro tennis either.

Hsieh turned 37 years old yesterday. She’s in France and according to her social media, she’s been learning how to ski in the Alps and also recently she took equestrian lessons. But she hasn’t mentioned anything about any tennis career updates or comebacks or injuries.

While Venus Williams continues to compete at 42, Hsieh, one of the most colorful, appealing personalities in the WTA, has just quietly departed from pro tennis without any explanation.

If Hsieh’s days as a pro tennis player has ended or unofficially ended, it will go down as one of the most mysterious and odd career conclusions in history.

Here is the Su-Wei Hsieh Biofile Interview I did at US Open years ago.
