Miami Open Day One Qualies

sonyericsonRyan Harrison had a three hour war with Horacio Zeballos which came down to 4-4 in the third. With Fish brother Christian fiancee Lauren and friend Venus looking on Harrison got stun-gunned by Zeballos who suddenly hit his turbo gear when it really counted - hitting winners and lines and stretch volleys. He couldn't miss. Harrison played well but Zeballos - fueled by a raucous Latino crowd - was magnificent in winning eight straight points to close the show. Continue to read full article...

Flagrant Behavior by Jerks in Pro Tennis

2610-145613Since Alexander Zverev is being unjustly criticized for his on court behavior - I have compiled a list of offensive conduct by professional tennis players: This former ATP world no 1 and multiple grand slam champion wrecked two complimentary European sports cars at an ATP tournament. The star player told the automaker representative (a woman) that he wanted a third car but was rejected. In response to the verbal rejection of not being give the third car to crash this star player told the woman: "You can suck my Continue to read full article...

RafaelNadal20X20Rafael Nadal needed every trick in his book and then a few new ones to finally thwart the formidable challenge of eighteen year old Alexander Zverev in the fourth round at Indian Wells 75 in the third set. It was a fascinatingly arresting slugfest to witness - the young tiger vs the aging legend. The teenager had the upper hand at the end serving for the match enjoying an early break lead and then serving for the win at 54. All through the battle Zverev kept his cool and acted like the more confident man in charge while struggling Nadal exuded desperation and panic and fury - as if his life and career were at stake. The Agony of Del Potro

dbo-del-potro-miniJuan Martin Del Potro is back in the saddle competing again on the ATP Tour after a long hiatus. But he's clearly not quite the same force he used to be. The serve and forehand are still potent weapons but the backhand does not have the same range of motion in the left wrist and thus the once lethal shot is considerably weakened. Delpo's suffering was on display today vs Tomas Berdych as he lost 76 62. Del Potro fought off a slew of match points in the 51 game but his agony was apparent. Continue to read full article...

Tiafoe TKOs Fritz in Indian Wells

tiafoeSince it was arguably the biggest and most interesting match of the month in professional tennis we may as well start a special discussion about last night's blockbuster Frances Tiafoe vs Taylor Fritz showdown. The levels of intrigue about this clash of eighteen year old American titans are endless - from the physical and sociological aspects to the on court duel itself. It turned out to be an epic tactical battle eventually won again by Tiafoe who seems to have Fritz figured out. Continue to read full article...

“Facing McEnroe” Book Sneak Peak

McEnroeJohnfhvolleygoodMay20I'm happy to announce that I just about finished with my fifth tennis book "Facing McEnroe" which consists of over 60 interviews with various players and tennis world figures about what it's like to compete against John McEnroe on a tennis court. Here is one interview with the Swede Christian Bergstrom who played McEnroe four times ... Christian Bergstrom: "My first memory is when I saw him on television against Borg in all the exciting matches in Wimbledon. He was only seventeen or something when he reached the semis. Very young. And then went on beat Borg in '81. Interesting." Question: Your most memorable match with McEnroe? You played him four times... Christian Bergstrom: "I don't remember, really. I remember one second round French Open. It was the match of the day with all the journalists and everything else. And on clay I was supposed to have a decent chance. But I got killed on center court, 6-3 6-4 6-2 or something. And he played really good - and I couldn't get my play going. But then we had some matches indoors. Close ones. 7-5 6-4 or 7-6 6-3, things like that. I didn't beat him but came kind of close in a few sets. So he was tough to play against [smiles]. No rhythm at all. Very strange. Played serve and volley all the time. You'd get no rhythm at all. So he was obviously one of the best players in the world." Continue to read full article...

isner By Jayita Belcourt Controversy erupts in Australia following the host nations heartbreak at the first round matchup of the Davis Cup after Bernard Tomic’s loss to USA’s John Isner 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) in the first reverse singles. In a match that was full of high charged anticipation, with Australia needing to win the match to keep their Davis cup hopes alive in 2016, the 23 year Aussie struggled to build any lasting momentum as he moved sluggishly around the court for most of the first 2 sets against the tall American who dished down 49 aces and clocked his fastest ATP serve at 253km. A normally cool and composed Tomic spat bursts of frustration at change of ends, not only because he was a mere observer to the sheer power of his opponent, but more so because of his fellow countryman.
