Richard Pagliaro
Richard Pagliaro, is a life-long, devoted tennis fan and mediocre recreational player, who has covered professional tennis for more than two decades. A graduate of New York University, he was tennis columnist for Gannett Newspapers in New York for several years before serving as an editor for Tennis Week.com for a decade. He is currently a Senior Editor and “Gear Guru” at Tennis Magazine and a Tennis Channel contributor. Richard has interviewed dozens of Hall of Fame players including Rod Laver, Don Budge, John McEnroe, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal, Bjorn Borg and Gabriela Sabatini yet none of these legends have been able to help him improve his sporadic serve that moves with the speed of a slinky. He is an avid recreational player who welcomes the opportunity to hit with you in the New York City area.

I tried to reply to Richard (he has written to me before) to his old email address and it bounced back. Below is what I wrote – if you can forward this to Richard, I’d like to send him the one-page attachment which explains the idea…
I saw you on the Tennis Ch. and thought I’d write oncemore. I forget if I sent you the attachment previously of an INSTANT OUT-BUZZER in tennis which would solve the problems of line’s people errors and the whole Challenge System. It would ELIMINATE THEM! Can you imagine the end of lines-people as a thing that really could be achieved soon? It all depends on getting Hawk-Eye/Shot-Spot computers to recognize an OUT-ball much quicker…and ring a buzzer.
I have sent the idea out to numerous tennis people with virtually no response. I have mailed hardcopies to John McEnroe’s Academy hoping he would get behind the idea and push (computer-people) for an INSTANT BUZZER.
Thought I’d give it a shot – maybe you could pass it along to someone appropriate in the tennis community. Coming from little ol’ me, no one listens. This IS the future; it’s just a matter of when will tennis decide to develop and use it?
I received a response from a person at the Hawk-Eye Company who told me it was not up to them to develop the INSTANT BUZZER. I wrote back that it was squarely on the shoulders of companies like Shot-Spot and Hawk-Eye to develop this FIRST…then, present it to tennis authorities. Never heard back from the person…or received a response from Johnny Mac, of course.
One day, I’ll see tennis WITH THE INSTANT OUT-BUZZER and tell people, ‘see that…I thought of that first, but no one heard me.’
Take care. Love to hear what you thought, Richard. THANKS. Sincerely, Doug

Richard:
I had promised you a free Etcheberry Certification Clinic experience awhile back, and I just wanted to make sure you knew it was still available. Our final clinic for this year is at Pat’s training facilities outside Orlando on the 10th and 11th of October, FYI. After that we will offer a clinic at the PTR World Conference at Hilton Head in mid-to-late February 2011.
We are actually hearing from coaches and trainers that major centers are giving preference to Etcheberry Certified candidates now. And PTR is offering Etch Certification Clinics all over the world under Pat’s direction. PTR has also requested permission to sponsor some domestic clinics in conjunction with us, so the experience is timely and worthwhile. We have also had USPTA regional chapters sponsoring clinics over the past three years.
If you can make it down to Orlando, we’ll provide the Experience and accommodations at The Mission Inn Resort.

Hi John:
Thanks for contacting me. I am sorry I did not reply sooner – have been swamped at the Open daily. I will call you once it is over – very much interested in attending and my mom and some good friends live not far from Orlando so I have a place to stay down there. I’m up for it for sure. Thank you.
all the best,
