Wimbledon begins

wimbThe highpoint of the tennis season is here. It looks like Novak and Andy are on a collision course but you can never count out Roger Federer who is especially hungry and eager right now because this could very well be his last chance to win a major title. There are some fine first round battles – I like the Fritz vs Wawrinka showdown and Karlovic vs Coric and Isner vs Baghdatis as well as Gulbis vs Sock. How Kyrgios and Thiem and Raonic progress will be fun to follow. Thiem has his hands full in the first round with Flo Mayer. On the ladies side it’s hard to see anything but Serena vs Garbine or Kvitova. The world’s best tennis event has begun and it’s time to analyze and dissect the brilliant tennis we are about to observe over the next fortnight….

Sam a bad mover? Maybe my vision is going, but I always felt that he had decent wheels (even if he didn’t always employ them all that well due to poor/lazy shot decisions). The few times I’ve seen Sam, it always looked like he was pretty athletic and explosive, but his passive mentality pervades to all aspects of his game (including his movement). If he wanted to, he can run down stuff all day, but he didn’t want to, so he didn’t move. At any rate, Sam’s backhand seems a heck of a lot better than either Roddick’s or Sock’s. No, not at the Mardy Fish level, but well within “average ATP Tour backhand levels”, IMO.

I think a lot of times, too, Sam has not been in great shape.

Hartt: I agree I am picking Raonic now he look great and I see the little differences with mcenroe – this is it for Raonic this is what he’s been waiting for – how he handled Sock was awfully impressive –

Querrey has always been in top shape he trains hard runs the sprints at the track – I have never ever seen Sam tired or fatigued on the court – the problem for Sam was he was too soft mentally on court and he had the intensity of a golfer – not enough fire and desire – he would choke a lot of matches like in Davis Cup vs Ward – it will be very interesting now to see how/if Capn Courier decides to deploy his Querrey option in future Davis Cup ties as it’s been pretty clear in the last two years Courier has shown reluctance to play Sam after witnessing that total collapse in San Diego vs Ward – and it will be interesting to see how Sam handles now being the favorite as opposed to being the longshot (no pressure) underdog which he was vs Djokovic –
