Wimbledon 2015, It doesn’t get any better than Djokovic vs. Federer

P1011052
Here we go again, tennis genius on display. Two wizards engineering tennis magic on Center Court at Wimbledon.

Two supremely focused and talented marvels conducting a sword fight of with a yellow ball Slazenger, one point of awe inspiring combat after the other over and over.

You will not find a better rivalry in any sport, in the history of sport.

Federer got the early break at love but lost it immediately for 43. Federer earned a couple of set points at 65 but Djokovic unleashed two unreturnable serves to the Fed backhand in the ad court.

Suddenly, Djokovic found another gear and exploded to a 7-1 tiebreak win to earn the first set. But the best is surely yet to come…

They are playing on fairly even terms; the difference is Novak is playing more efficiently while the error prone Federer & his alter-ego “Shankerer” have resurfaced today… Too many netted backhands & forehands during pivotal points…HUGE set point save for Federer at 6-5 in the 2nd set tiebreak… Riveting stuff… You recently called Nadal-Djokovic the Best Rivalry Ever… The Big 3 Rivalries are pretty equally EPIC & we are all privileged to witness SUPREME GREATNESS that we’ll likely never see again in any era: past, present & future!

What a 2nd set tie-break & potentially a match saver for Federer…The Real Drama starts now… Enjoy fellow Avid Tennis Fans/Lovers & a pleasant day to you my friend, Mr. Scoop!

A Technical & Systematic Dismantling by the Top Player of the 2010s era – Novak Djokovic, the Tennis Machine that I refer to as “The Serbinator” over Maestro Roger.. Djokovic’s precision, highly efficient baseline tennis along with his impenetrable defensive & the best returning skills in the sport proved to be too much for an error prone Federer — who despite playing well & having his chances was unable to convert on the opportunities that were presented to him during the match’s most pivotal points; Federer repeatedly netting backhands as well as forehands during those crucial points… Credit where it’s due… Congrats to Novak Djokovic for winning yet another Wimbledon & Grand Slam title! The complete tennis machine that I refer to as “The Serbinator” is proving himself to be a very worthy successor to occupying the Top Spot that the 2 Premier Champions in History held for so long during their amazing run of greatness, Roger & Rafa… Truly the Big 3 & Big 3 only… The Djoker is making history of his own & it looks like he is far from done adding to his growing list of achievements… Always a pleasure to witness Tennis played at the highest level imaginable by the Premier Champions I’ve had the privilege of watching display their SPECIAL GIFT between the lines… Very Good Match but not the Classic we hoped for & that’s simply because Novak was his sound, machine-like Best today & Shankerer was shaky… It was worth getting up at 6:00 AM to watch though… Good Afternoon everyone!

Welcome back as well CS3, wow what a match, as always when these two titans lock horns it’s always an epic struggle, every single ball is such a mental and physical battle, requiring so much precision power daring intelligence guts perseverance etc. THIS IS the GREATEST rivalry in tennis and I say sports history. 20-20 now. THis final was amazing, Djok barely steals the first set, Fed steals the second, but remarkably Djok didn’t mentally falter and lose the early BP in the third, Fed and Rafa have built him into a mental and physical monster, he knows he must never mentally crumble against them and he does not. Stan can outhit Djokovic, he can’t mentally crumble Djok but he can KO him with the firepower and amazing shots. Fed and Rafa can’t quite do that to him anymore but Fed really really pushed Djok to the limits today as he always does. Djok has had to earn all of his majors, he never had a soft final opponent, no Philippousises, Martins, Clements, Schuettlers, Puertas, Piolines, Djokovic has to beat all time legends in his finals and he’s up to the task. He’s going to win many more. Just a magical day today for tennis, Wimbledon always delivers tennis magic.

Djokovic & Rafa have had to beat the stiffer opposition for their Major titles… Novak is benefitting from the Roger & Rafa being past their peak but in fairness, he held his own against them at their Best… He’s a worthy heir to their throne… He has more Majors left in him however this may be his last PEAK, PEAK kind of year… The age is approaching where the inevitable gradual process of decline starts to unfold… There are quite a few talented, emerging young guns who are going to break out SOONER than later too… Players usually come down to earth the year after an Amazing season & recent history suggests as much… Djokovic should be On Top for at least couple more years!

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Rafa’s records against fellow Legends in Grand Slam Finals & semifinals will be pretty hard to ever top… He beat them at their VERY BEST too… His rivalries versus Djokovic & Federer will be considered better & more memorable than Federer-Djokovic by most observers also & don’t get me wrong, Roger-Novak is an AWESOME RIVALRY also but Rafa has been involved in what many consider The Greatest Matches Ever against both of his Fellow All-Time Great, Legendary Champions… It’s all a matter of choice!

The real grass court event starts here in Rhode Island tomorrow. I’m on the media balcony now watching Dr. Ivo, Tommy Haas and Tomic warming up 4 on a court. There’s only 3 practice courts here at the Hall of Fame. How about these first round matches: Izzie v Ram, Haas v Mannarino, Stepanek v Sock. You know Radek will give Jack fits with his flat ball on these courts. And yes Distin Brown is in the draw playing a wc and Noah Rubin got a wc.

Dethroning a VINTAGE, STILL PRIME Federer on the lawns of Wimbledon in 2008 carries more weight than beating the 2014/2015 version… Novak’s impressive Slam wins over Rafa in 2011-early 2012 at: Wimbledon, the US Open & the Australian Open (ESPECIALLY) will always be his most impressive triumphs… IMO, Rafa’s Most Impressive Grand Slam Titles other than beating Federer at Wimbledon in 2008 & the Australian Open in 2009 have to be the 4 Slams he’s won against Novak in Paris & New York respectively… All of these guys have pushed each other to a level of GREATNESS that is EXTRAORDINARY & we’ll likely never see such a Tremendous Trio again!

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 2:18 pm

Dustin Brown has shown the ability to play great grass court tennis… I wish the Hall of Fame Championships at Newport weren’t so overlooked… Should get a lot more emphasis from the media & from more notable players… I know guys are drained after the French Open-Wimbledon European slam double on clay & grass but Newport is the lone grass event in America as well as a celebration for the Legends of the game… Just my take!

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 2:25 pm

Rafa could mentally crumble Djokovic up until the 2013 US Open & 2014 French Open Finals… This Djokovic is an iron-willed MACHINE who keeps it together better… There is still a shaky psyche there but he’s efficient enough with his game & DEFIANT enough with his attitude to overcome those adverse moments now!

  • Gaurang · July 12, 2015 at 5:22 pm

What an amazing match today! Federer won the come-to-net department (Djokovic failed to pass or lob him, and when he came to the net was easily passed/lobbed by the opponent). However Djokovic won the second serve (was much better than Fed’s, he varied it so well that fed kept guessing and couldn’t gain offense from returns), returns (huge gap, he neutralized fed’s first serve, as well as gained advantage in returning second serve), and mental strength (kept cool for longer periods of the match and on important points). I think they were almost even in the baseline play (roger was more aggressive so he won the short rallies and lost the long rallies), and in first serve (both’s were equally effective).

I am surprised at the poor play of Novak at the net. He tried to lob for 13-14 times and failed each time. He just couldn’t hit passing shots except near the very end of the match. I thought he could loose because roger could just come to the net more often but novels superior second serve and returns basically won him the match.

Awesome display by Novak. No doubt he is the best player in the world at the moment. He is the favorite for US Open unless he faces a peak wawrinka.

CS3 I don’t know if I can subscribe to the Fed is past his peak school of thought. He might actually be better now, but it’s hard to tell because Djokovic is playing better than anyone ever has. I believe Djokovic might have taken tennis to a new level of height of excellence. Fed actually might be at his best now, he looked amazing today also. But Fed’s best is not enough to make him the best now – because Djokovic is too good. That’s my theory. Rafa and Fed have created an all time great tennis monster in Novak Djokovic.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2015 at 7:35 pm

Dan, tell us about the big renovations done to the site. Since you haven’t mentioned them I assume it’s pretty similar to the way it was, which is not a bad thing because I loved the Hall of Fame just the way she was.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2015 at 7:37 pm

“There is still a shaky psyche there but he’s efficient enough with his game & DEFIANT enough with his attitude to overcome those adverse moments now!” That’s well said CS3, very well said.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2015 at 7:40 pm

Gaurang, Djokovic is just the mentally and physically superior player to Fed but it’s only by a very very small margin, Fed is right there, he very easily could have won this match today. But Djokovic is slightly better, smarter, stronger, younger, fresher, more confident. Both played magical tennis, as a fan to grade this major final, I’d give it a an A plus, today was as good as it gets on a tennis court.

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 7:59 pm

Having arguably the 2 Greatest Champions in History pushing you to get better & reach your potential is bound to help create that next Extraordinary Great Player within the ranks with that kind of ability… Adding on to Scoop’s point, that is Rafa & Roger inspired in Novak Djokovic… He’s an extension of the Greatness that was laid before him… Credit to him for enduring so many painful losses against Roger & Rafa & finding a way to eventually crash the exclusive table for two … My question is which young talent on the scene will emerge as the heir to Novak’s throne? He exists but has not revealed himself YET… Should be fascinating to watch the next couple of years unfold as yet another transformation will take place!

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2015 at 8:04 pm

Maybe Reilly Opelka the near 7 footer who won junior Wimbledon today, he also won Eddie Herr in Dec. Looks like Opelka will be a superior version of Isner, I saw him play, he moves more fluidly than Isner and is more accomplished at the same age than Isner. I just don’t see anyone in the top 200 now who has the goods to dethrone Djokovic. Delpo is out, Murray out, Fed out, Rafa out, Dimitrov nope, Kei – maybe but he’s a long shot, Kyrgios – longshot, Kokkinakis – longshot. I think we have to look at these juniors like Opelka, Tommy Paul, and rookies like Rublev, Zverev, Coric.

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 8:07 pm

Roger has more of his Top Form left than Rafa does at the moment… Rafa is battling major mental issues for really the first time I can remember… I think he’ll find himself eventually & put together 1 final push; I am not making a guarantee however & I am as Big a “Nadalista” as they come… Have to face reality in life sometimes… Given the tremendous fight that he has & the fact he still shows enough flashes of vintage Rafa like play, I can’t write him off yet… I will still say though Federer is near the top of his game & the sport, I don’t think he’s anymore near the level of 2004-2007 Federer… That Federer was RIDICULOUSLY GOOD!

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 8:09 pm

    *anywhere near

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 8:18 pm

I didn’t mean dethrone at the moment just to clarify… Dethrone in the next couple of years because as amazing as Novak is playing right now, he will come back down to earth & he is nearing the age of 30… Age isn’t as important as it used to be in Tennis with Serena, Roger, Stan & others confirming as much but time is”still on the side of the up & comers… Someone will emerge, they always do… When Ali left, many predicted the demise of Heavyweight Boxing… Larry Holmes proved to be a worthy heir & then Mike Tyson took DOMINATION & DESTRUCTION to a never before seen level; creating mainstream interest like fighters ever have or will… 1 of the Best things about sports is that they evolve Mr.Scoop, just like the cycle of life!

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2015 at 8:33 pm

But the heir apparent is not apparent right now CS3, in the past you could sense the young Fed was going to be the next one. Rafa produced the same energy and look of a cant miss kid, as did Djokovic. Right now, that can’t miss kid is definitely not apparent, just as Serena’s heir apparent is not apparent. But as we know things can change quickly in tennis, and the heir apparents could announce themselves sooner than later.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2015 at 9:02 pm

I am not the only one to say Roger Federer may be playing his best tennis right now, Johan Kriek said it also on Facebook:

Roger playing the best tennis I have ever seen in his career and definitely the best I have ever seen him play on grass. He is peaking as we saw against Murray.
Novak is the best player in the world however losing the French has “opened his eyes” and he is perhaps more focused now not to lose two majors in a row.
Both players are as fresh as one can be after 6 singles matches….
I like both these guys and respect their accomplishments. The best we have ever seen! But today I pull for Roger.

  • Dan Markowitz · July 12, 2015 at 9:43 pm

I don’t think Federer played particularly well after the second set today. I had no doubt that Djoko was going to win the match. I don’t know what you’re referring to, Gaurang, when you said Djoko couldn’t pass Fed. I remember two passes off his backhand that were superb. One was when Fed hit a knifing approach shot that landed just inside the baseline and Djoko hit a ridiculous down the line backhand pass. The other sealed the match, Fed served and volleyed and Djoko crushed a backhand return down the line that Fed got nowhere near to touching. Look, when Djoko moves the way he did today, serves as well and comes up to the net boldly (take note Murray), he’s unbeatable. Now when he played Wawa in the French, Wawa’s game is bigger than Fed’s and he prevented Djoko from approaching the net a lot or hitting winners.

  • CS3 · July 12, 2015 at 10:36 pm

I agree Scoop that’s why I said the heir exists but he hasn’t revealed himself yet… We never know who the next Great player(s) & fighter(s) are until they break through… Tuning in to find out is 1 of the things I love about sports!

  • Gaurang · July 14, 2015 at 4:47 am

Dan, if you check Net points won, you would see Federer won around 75% of net points in the first 2 sets, and 65% in the last 2. These are high percentages, especially 75 — thats why I think Novak was not good at passing or lobbing Federer when Federer was at the net. Novak did better in the fourth set though — he was more confident that time, and was sensing victory. Boris may have made some comments in the rain break as well which could have helped him.

Novak must really work on his passing shots and lobs — he is usually good at these, but looks like he has lost his touch on those recently.

  • Gaurang · July 14, 2015 at 4:50 am

I have always felt that matches between Novak and Federer are 50-50, or even in the favor of Fed, since Novak has not been able to beat Federer when he is playing well. He relies on Fed making errors.

However, finally, after a really long time, Novak defeated with a significant margin in the 3rd and 4th sets even when Fed was playing well. This would be a huge confidence booster for him in his future matches with Fed. I predict that from now on Djokovic will have a clear edge against Fed. He will win 3 out of every 4 matches with him from now on. And improve his 20-20 record.

Novak has a 21-23 loosing record against Rafa. Soon he will right that as well, and by the end of this year he would have winning records against both Rafa and Fed. Will there be anyone left who has a winning record against Novak then?

This will be an important point in the discussions placing him on the all time list.

  • CS3 · July 14, 2015 at 10:51 pm

The H2H is will be key however the H2H Novak has against Rafa in Grand Slams will be something that really elevates Rafa’s All-Time standing… Rafa’s H2H versus all his top rivals in Grand Slams will likely not be duplicated or surpassed… Sure, the French Open does significantly play into the H2H he has but he’s beaten all of them in other Slams as well including Finals on their preferred surface which the same cannot be said the other way around… They are The Top 3 Tennis Champions playing simultaneously in history & it’s a matter of opinion as to who will be considered the GOAT… We as Fans are privileged to be witnessing something so SPECIAL… It’s Novak’s time right now but the 2 who came before him left a legacy that will never be erased as they set a standard that elevated the entire sport… Credit to Novak for carrying it on & setting an extension of that standard of SUPREME GREATNESS… I stand by what I said that Novak will come back down to earth next year… He’ll still be on top but he’ll lose more matches than he is losing this year… His 2012 season is proof as are the 2011 & 2014 campaigns for Rafa following his out of this world type seasons… It’s simply not humanly possible to stay playing SUPERHUMAN TENNIS for consecutive seasons… These RARE kind of amazing years are physically & mentally taxing on the Top Players who are gifted enough to have them… Novak is at his peak at the moment & he needs to enjoy it while he can… Time is on the side of the young guns but like Scoop & I were discussing, the future heir is yet to reveal himself!
