Maybe we should have realized all along Djokovic was going to be better than Federer

P5221651
These are interesting factoids —

It took Federer 17 tries to win his first masters series title – Djokovic won his first masters in his tenth attempt —
Fed won his first grand slam in his 17th major appearance while Djokovic won his first in his 13th try —

There is a school of though that adheres to the notion that the current era today is the most difficult of all time, with Rafa, Fed, Murray and Djokovic, with several other very dangerous floaters – and the early Federer era is generally considered to be a weaker era or a, as some term it, a “transition” period of tennis —

The fact that Djokovic was able to achieve such early success in such a brutally tough era could be interpreted as a clue that he always was the heir apparent and the superior of Federer (3-1 head to head in major finals) — and it just took a long time for the general consensus to realize it —

But it’s becoming clearer and clearer now, that Djokovic is a very special super champion in his own ways – and barring an astonishing permanent transformation of Stan Wawrinka into The Stanimal, it looks like Djokovic could be well on his way to winning several more majors on top of his current stack of ten, and Federer’s immortal seventeen is certainly within reach if Djokovic stays healthy and fit —

@ scoop – pls dont post this stuff..

FED is the GOAT, period ! LOL

Brilliant what Djoko has done, absolutely brilliant, particularly coming from a poor war-torn country like Serbia. Definitely, if he reaches Fed’s 17 slams, because Fed isn’t getting anymore unless Djoko gets knocked off by a Wawrinka or Nadal or Murray, he is the GOAT. But even if Djoko wins 4 more slams by 30, he’d still have to win 3 more slams after the age of 30 which no other tennis player in the last generation has ever done. Take Fed, he’s won only won slam in his 30’s, maybe Agassi won 2 or 3.

mm – Fed absolutely is one of the greatest but Djokovic is changing the history books — this year’s Wimbledon and US Open finals symbolized the turning point —

BTW, B Klein won his match first round in Cary NC Chally, Kozlov lost in three to second seed Krajicek and Harrison got a WC and is playing Facundo mena –

Well, I do think its unfair that you say Wimbledon and US Open this year were the tipping point. Fed is 34, the very fact that he’s gotten to the last two slam finals means he’s playing at an amazingly high level. He is still ahead of Djoko on the GOAT list and will be until either Djoko gets 17 or in the neighborhood and also competes at this high level in his early to mid 30’s.

Dan, Fed is arguably playing his best tennis now – Goodall looked up the stats of Fed’s serving and he’s actually winning more first serve points now than his prime years and he broke his own record for consecutive service games held successfully — this illustrates that Fed is very likely playing better tennis now than before, and he’s doing it against tougher competition, if Djokovic had Delpo’s wrist problems, Fed would easily be number one the last two years — but Super Djokovic has blocked Fed from regaining number one —

People STILL can’t accept it and likely never will.

  • Moskova Moskova · September 16, 2015 at 9:14 am

this is some blasphemous stuff on this site LOL

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 16, 2015 at 9:16 am

Exactly S, like in boxing many fans and media still believe Muhammad Ali was the greatest and always will be the greatest, but several of the following heavyweight champions have been superior to Ali but they are ignorantly not accepted or approved of, for whatever reasons — sport goes on and greater champions follow, it’s the natural evolution of sport —

let’s see djoko get closer to 17 then i may consider him as a paper-GOAT….

    FED is the GOAT !!

  • Moskova Moskova · September 16, 2015 at 9:31 am

at the end of the day the GS tally and prize money are primary factors…

GS tally – FED is #1
prize money – FED is #1

other factors (that carry lower weight) :

    fanbase – FED is #1
    endorsements – FED is #1
head to head records – FED is #2/3 ?
    masters 1000 tally (or %) – FED is #2/3 ?
tourna wins tally (or %) – FED is #2/3 ?
match wins tally (or %) – FED is #2/3 ?

    FED is the GOAT !!!

I’d rather chew on aluminium foil than watching Đoković against another retriever.

If the fed era was a transition era why over the last say 3 years has Hewitt, haas, robredo and probably a few others able to hang up in the top 30 and or get top ten wins somewhat regularly. If these guys were part of a weak era they should not even be able to compete at this level anymore. You can even throw roddick in there too. I don’t get this weak era crap.

Tennis Observer, I agree somewhat that Djokovic vs similar style players to himself like murray and seppi is not the best tennis to showcase to the public — but Djokovic against a contrasting style like Stanimal, Fed, Rafa, is far more interesting and entertaining to watch —
