    12 minutes to tip off!

  • Dan Markowitz · August 29, 2016 at 11:36 pm

Is it just me or does Taylor Fritz look like Herman Munster’s son? Only a bigger lankier version. Can Sock’s performance tonight finally put to rest that this guy is or one day will be a slam contender? I mean he’s up two sets to love and then looks like he’s not crazy about winning in straights and drops the third, tanks the 4th winning one game and can’t serve the match out in the 5th against an 18 year old, who’s good, but not in the Zverev-Coric class. Sock served something like 18 doubles. He’s a mercurial player, but Sock is not a serious player. There’s something just a little bit off about him.

Djoko gives a new definition to the phrase “clinical tennis.” I’m sorry, anyone who thinks he is an entertaining player or crowd pleaser is just seeing something I’m not.I think something might be off now with Djoko.

Can we all agree that most of women’s tennis is pretty much unwatchable? They had to show the snooze fest between Murguruza and Mertens before they showed the 5th set between Izzie and Tiafoe.I really feel that if the US Open only featured the women, there would be like 1/10 the crowds if not less.

Andrew, do you seriously think that Harrison will beat Raonic? Did you see Raonic dispatch Brown, who can be a tricky opponent, very easily?

  • Dan markowitz · August 30, 2016 at 6:13 am

Real good win for Harry, but Manny has slipped this year. No Harry has zero chance of beating Raonic. Amazing Puig lost in first round. She had a good two weeks to recover. Going out to Open today and looking forward to watching C Harry.

  • Jg · August 30, 2016 at 6:37 am

Dan, looks like Kyrigos will be playing in the old grandstand

  • Andrew Miller · August 30, 2016 at 7:27 am

    Harry, anything can happen.

  • Dan markowitz · August 30, 2016 at 7:47 am

Didn’t see that on the schedule for today, Jon, I’ll have to take another look I guess. What’s so bad about Sock’s backhand? Can someone who’s a pro and reads this site tell me? Like Coach Skelly. He seems to hit it flat, but he gets good extension.

  • Dan Markowitz · August 30, 2016 at 8:01 am

How’s this for a journeyman’s delight, 34 yr old Paolo Lorenzi vs 33 yr old Carlos Berlocq. How can I not go out and watch Steppy v Gilles Simon today? Great match of players with contrasting styles. As is Kohly v Mahut. Can anyone guess my two other favorite matches of the day?

    Dolgo-David F
    Feliciano v Coric

Also like Mmoh v Alize Lim’s squeeze, Chardy.
    Thiem-Millman
Granollers v Monaco should be a war

You’re right, Jon, the old Grandstand has three nice matches all in a row:
    Giorgi-Stosur
    Bernie-Dzumhur
    Nick-Bedene

I will be a fixture there today. Alright, I will pick the winners of everyone of these matches now. If anyone else can do this they are brilliant.

    Berlocq
    Simon
    Kohly
    Ferrer
    Coric
    Stosur
    Bernie
    Nick K

  • Andrew Miller · August 30, 2016 at 8:20 am

Hartt yes I think he will. Raonic is one of best players since January. And this is also the kind of match RH wants. He’s been playing the best I’ve ever seen him and he enters the match with a surge of confidence and support. He’s been flying under the radar and this is the level he believes he should be. In contrast to past no wildcard. He’s also playing for more than himself. Plus he is serving well, really well. Things are lining up well for him to enter with a nothing to lose attitude. Tall order and the right match for proving himself. He loses no big deal. But he’s the only one of the two of then to enter the match with four straight wins on the premesis and a wtt championship, his first team trophy of any kind. If his brother puts up a fight today yes, I think Harrison gets the better if the matchup tmmrw

  • Andrew Miller · August 30, 2016 at 8:21 am

Keys win. Shaky match for Madison!

  • Jg · August 30, 2016 at 9:27 am

Fritz will not lose another match to Sock, you can see it in Fritz’ face after the match, real disappointment like he never expected to lose

  • Dan Markowitz · August 30, 2016 at 9:49 am

One of our readers, Ryan, says he only watched a bit of Sock-Fritz match yesterday–and he was there all day–and he was snoozing off. He said American tennis is all bang bang tennis while European tennis is “elegant.” Ryan’s idea of a great match is watching Benny the Jet Benneateau or the Sela-Cuevas 5 setter yesterday. I have to admit, I love Sela’s backhand, might not be the best one hander, but I think it is for small guy.

  • Dan Markowitz · August 30, 2016 at 9:50 am

Tiafoe has some elegance to him I think. His forehand is snappy and his footwork has flair.
