Nadal’s Intensity in Rio is awesome

RafaelNadal20X20So far the standout observation from the Olympics tennis is not the myriad of upsets – for me it’s the incredible intensity level Rafael Nadal is expressing in his matches – This guy is absolutely starving for a big title and he desperately wants to satisfy his insatiable appetite right now in Brazil – Nadal is flying around the court and his fists are flying – he his lips are kissing on the court – that’s right: Nadal planted a smooch on his doubles’ partner Lopez’s neck after they beat Delpotro and Gonzalez the other night – Nadal seems to have the same desire again to win that he had when he was a teenager – I’m in awe of watching Nadal play every point in singles and doubles in Rio because his intensity levels could possibly even be at their all time high – The hungry wounded starving animal is the most dangerous — (Nadal artwork by Andres Bella) (Note: This will be my last post for a couple of weeks as we’re going to China for a vacation – take care everyone)

Rafa losing to Coric 61 63 reads like a subconscious tank. Though I didn’t see any of it I would guess Rafa was probably feeling: Hey I am fried from having a great Olympics in Rio, I just need a match or two on North American soil to be ready for US Open. You can have this one young Coric but in New York I will eat you for dinner. Yours truly, Rafa Nadal.

Fritz vs Tiafoe is a fantastic match up. Two young guns desperate to beat the other and get on top the totem pole. Fritz especially driven by revenge for the IW heartbreak loss. Three hour bloodbath in WS between these two strivers.

Cincy women’s semi – Kerber/Halep: a reminder, if we needed one, how much of tennis is mental. This side of it has always fascinated me – how to judge, how to describe, write about.( Bearing in mind we can’t know what’s going on in someone’s head.)

Angie deserved to win because Simona lost focus and nerve. No other reason. She’s just as skilled a player, ref H to H record. So why ? Something’s bothering her.

Simona could do with a sports psych around – this seemed to work for Murray from time to time, according to him ie.

Darren C is a nice Australian bloke and a decent coach for SH but he can’t do the mental thing for her.

I would say Dimitrov has similar depressing experiences but he seems intent on playing his way through them.

I agree about the mental aspect of tennis being extremely interesting. Remember reading that Lendl recommended his “mental coach” for lack of a better word to Andy the first time they were teamed up.

Ryan Harrison: MVP of WTT with Gibbs. That tank is bursting.

Ryan Harrison confidence tank just cracked from explosion, needs larger size tank 🙂

Scoop, 1st time seeing Harrison smile as part of San Diego team. DY was enjoying the team also with the Philadelphia Freedom. Both guys enjoying the sport for once.

They say winning cures a lot of things.

Biggest decievers and not-important wins in tennis, World Team Tennis and doubles. They don’t count and they don’t help a player get out of the tennis hinterlands.

Spadea never played WTT. Said it was a total waste, and he got offered 20 grand to play for the 3 weeks. But he said you’re playing Challenger players and getting no ranking points. Not worth it.

Maybe WTT follows more in barnstorming tradition. Short of pro players hitting at U.S. public courts (or college players hitting on local courts), there’s zero access for the public. And with a lot of content buttoned up on ESPN & cable channels, is there any wonder the sport’s pro ranks have suffered (until the uptick recently).
