Kyrgios Controversy (again) at Roland Garros

Nick Kyrgios has a natural tendency to create controversy. He did it again yesterday in his tight three set win over Italian Cecchinato. Late in the first set after a sizzling point which erupted the crowd into a frenzy Kyrgios shouted “Towel towel!” to the ballkid. He voiced his request loudly to overcome the crowd noise and chair umpire Ramos gave Kyrgios a code violation for abusing the ballkid though it was a judgement call by Ramos and not an official rule. The alert and resourceful Kyrgios politely challenged Ramos and exposed the flawed call was not really a rule while also managing in a jab on Djokovic. Standing at his service box top line Kyrgios stated to the umpire and the viewing world that shouting ‘towel’ to be heard through the crowd noise was not a rule violation and certainly not a worse offense than Djokovic who pushed the arm of the chair umpire in Rome while checking a line call vs Nadal. Unaffected by the drama Kyrgios returned to play and then played lights out tennis to win the first set tiebreaker 8-6 with successive spectacular backhand and forehand winners to win seal the set en route to the hard fought straight set win.

Look, another reason I have trouble watching Djoko play is his incessant dribbling of the ball before he serves. It’s insane. My obsessive compulsive mind starts counting the number of times he’s dribbled the ball and it just rankles me. Guys like Kyrigios might dribble the ball twice while Djoko does it 20 times. They cannot get a shot clock in tennis installed fast enough.

Simple: After the previous point ends, the server has 20 seconds to get the next ball in play. There should be no extensions unless something wild happens. They’ve got to speed up these chronic stallers.

How Cilic going down to an Argentinian I’ve never heard of? And Kudla went down in straights and Sam “I am a terrible 5-set player” QBall lost to Frantangelo. Shelby Rogers beat Pliskova.

Got to give Steppy credit. He might have a chance to upend Murray in the 5th set starting tomorrow. One set if Murray comes out flat, Steppy might flirt and beguiling him just like he’s done to every Czech female player.

“Kyrgios stated to the umpire and the viewing world that shouting ‘towel’ to be heard through the crowd noise was not a rule violation.”

If you believe that excuse I will sell you the Golden Gate Bridge. Kyrgios screaming towel at a ballkid was repulsive. Anyone who berates children is a jerk. Lines men or chair umpires are one thing, kids are an entirely different matter.

Rafa is the king of all stallers Dan – I kind of like Djokovic’s ball bouncing – it builds anticipation for the fans watching –

Agree it was wrong Bryan but heat of the battle players to bad things – Fed even his the kid last year in monte carlo at the net – Hewitt hit a ballkid vs Russell in memphis sending a ball down to the other end of the court late in third set – some players have to vent –
