Is Djokovic Cracking?

An ex WTA star who is (or was) a very ardent supporter of Novak Djokovic is appalled at his on court behavior this year: “I am sorry to say I am losing all respect for him now. After seeing him here in Miami, and now one tantrum after the other. What’s up with this guy? I think he is having withdrawal symptoms from ‘something.’ Rafa or Roger would have NEVER done anything like this. I am posting a video in the comment section regarding his racquet toss. It seems the French Tennis Federation and Roland Garros deleted the original video! Wow, if the linesman hadn’t dodged and moved, DISQUALIFIED! Embarrassing.” Djokart Djokovic won in straights sets today to beat Berdych to reach the SF but during the match he tossed his racquet to the ground and it strangely bounced towards a linesperson who alertly dodged being hit. Berdych said after that if the racquet hit the official it would have been an instant disqualification for Djokovic. The disgusted WTA player who once revered her beloved Nole added: “He has been horrible pretty much all year. In Madrid he angrily shoved his racquets into bag after he WON. In Rome he shoved an umpire when he was checking a mark (vs Nadal). Then, he almost hit a ballboy full force (who was at the net post), and it was an angry blast after the other player missed the first serve. And now this? I find this very strange, it was one of the worst behavior of ANY top player except McEnroe. If he had hit that linesman (and his racquet is super heavy) in the face, career over. He is acting like a crazy person. Something is very wrong.” Djokovic is under heavy pressure to finally win his first but ever so elusive Roland Garros title after so many torturous failures where he was so so close to victory Could it be that the incredible pressure – which we can’t even begin to understand or relate to – is having a very adverse effect on his nerves and character?

You sound like a whiney little girl. It’s happened before and shit happens, grow up and don’t take everything so personally.

some valid points. I’m still a nole fan but I haven’t seen much of the footage so I haven’t formed an opinion. Nonetheless racket throwing is risky. Racket smashing I always see as a waste of a racket (which someone else could happily use) even though it can be entertaining to witness

People were trying to tell you Scoop that Djokovic was acting like a total jerk but you complained that they were ‘nitpicking’.

Djokovic is very lucky that he hasn’t been disqualified from several matches. In Rome he threw his racket so hard it bounced four feet high into the stands and hit a spectator. His pissy tantrum against Pascal Maria the other day that carried on into the post match interview would have gotten any other player into a lot of trouble.

His pathetic groveling for love from the crowd is embarrassing. There are huge posters in the Metro stations in Paris of him with hearts and cheesy lines about love and begging fans to ‘bring the love’ and then he does that phony overly dramatic thing of presenting his own heart to the crowd after every match which is getting a very tepid reaction. I don’t know what he is most desperate for – the FO title or for the fans to like him. I doubt he’ll get either.

    djoko’s a phony – that’s who he really is !

understandably so and nothing wrong with being a beast in pro-tennis but you gotta see past the faรƒยงade – if you can.

obviously, when he’s squeezed – his acting subsides and his true colors come out.

also, off tangent here but he may even be a muslim for all we know – why not ??….majority of former-yugos are muslim….why not ??…..because he wears a necklace with a cross and he crosses himself after wins ??….please ! ๐Ÿ˜‰ LOL

I haven’t seen Djoko do anything except exhibit alpha-male tendencies on the court that guys like Connors or Lendl did all the time. As for him winning the tournament, who’s going to stop him? Thiem, very unlikely, Murray in five sets, near impossible, only Wawa has a chance and this doesn’t seem to be the same Wawa as last year so again very unlikely.

Djoko’s winning the French Open and you heard it here first.

Sharoten: Evidently Djokovic does have a prickness to him – I was very surprised that this ex top player and a good friend was so repulsed by his arrogant behavior which she experienced in person – she said Djokovic went to practice during the womens final in miami and she was the only person there watching it on ct 1 and Djokovic was rude and mean to his own team and even yelling at them treating them like slaves – she was shocked – But I guess it’s par for the course as young Agassi mcenroe connors rios were also major pricks – I can see why Djokovic has a me vs the world attitude – every player is hunting him and trying to destroy his empire and his career – I still support Djokovic but will surely look at him differently – it makes me appreciate Nadal who has never once as far as I know exhibited any even remote prick-like qualities –

djoko the least popular #1 of all time barnone.

that heart to the crowd thing is sooo f-ing gay and cheeseeey.

not so fast Dan – let the bloodbaths commence ! ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol

Djokovic was perfect today – he didn’t give the kid any chance – he is a man on a mission a man possessed – Andy was also superb in slaying Stan but had to work an extra set – looks like Djokovic has his date with destiny on Sunday but Andy will pounce if any opportunity presents itself – The very small crowds for the womens SFs were disappointing – and proof that the WTA product is just not selling as it would like to right now –

I think the womens final is a compelling matchup, should be 2 good finals, although the tournament was a bit of a dud.

Novak Djokovic is not a muslim. He’s an orthodox christian. While it was possible 60 years ago to be a muslim and a Serb, today it’s not.

About his team: I don’t remember that he has fired any member of his team, and they work together for years, good times, bad times. And from what I know, they are very well paid.

Then, about the ball kid: your depiction is wrong. Federer did the same thing once, and nobody noticed. Novak had the decency to apologize.

Yes, I think he overdoes it a bit with the “bringthelove” campaign (and you can’t be sure it wasn’t directed by his PR agency), but he also does a lot of genuine, good things. Then, when Guga draws a heart on the court, it’s not ridiculous. Double standards, as usual?

About the match against Bedene: Bedene used every opportunity to asked the umpire to check the mark. It was gamesmanship and irritating. But, I understand, it’s always Novak’s fault.

I guess that everybody would be nervous in Novak’s place. The draw in Rome, and the schedule, were outrageous. Today, he was scheduled on the SL court, although clear no 1 for years. He was forced to play in the rain to accommodate the French organizers, and allow them not to refund the tickets. Somehow he’s always the one “without luck”. (Just check his draws 2008-2012.) And he’s on the verge to accomplish something historical.

Finally, I haven’t noticed Novak saying anything about his pairs, fellow players, making insinuations (like Murray does all the time). So, cut him some slack. He deserves it.

Scoop, although I don’t agree with that pro (who could well be resentful because Novak voiced the (un)official stance of the ATP about prize money), it’s was a good article.

Nice defense of Djokovic mat – I could see how this person was offended by saying Hi to Novak and he ignored her could be disturbing and insulting – I talked with a tennis figure who met Johnnymac and loved him but he wasn’t pleased about their first meeting and said “I loved his game and his tennis career but I wish I never met him” – It’s hard for these super champs to make a nice impression on every single person they meet – they have lives and are busy and it’s hard – I chalk it up to that – Still support and respect Novak all the way – he’s under super intense pressure to win this tourney and I understand how he could be in the mood he’s been in and if he’s been curt or rude to a few people – he’s still a great GREAT champion one of the best we’ve ever seen –

    Lets go Murray!!!

  • Mat4 · June 4, 2016 at 10:11 am

I recently read about a few examples where Novak was the “ordinary man” and other stars were acting like primadonnas. I really doubt that Novak would, without reason, avoid to say hello to another tennis player, especially since his cordial behavior toward colleagues is very well documented (if needed, I can’t quote links, examples, etc. just ask).

I guess that, just like it happens to everybody of us, he was absorbed in his thoughts, and didn’t notice the WTA player.

Yelling revisited: many of us tend to forget that Novak is a southerner, just like Fognini. While I have heard Novak swearing a lot of times, the only times it wasn’t directed at himself was in Madrid, a few years ago, where he indeed insulted the public. But to make things clear, he was insulted FIRST. And, those who know Spanish, if they rewatch the match on YT, will know clearly what was said to him, and it was worse than his answer.

I’ve never seen a player out-hit a Williams sister until now. Murguruza is bludgeoning Serena. And Serena’s compromised movement is hurting her. But Murguruza keeps double-faulting so even though she’s up a set and a break, she might lose it.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 4, 2016 at 11:38 am

Pierce like play by Garbine – Serena did not have a plan B – or maybe she never had a chance to think of any plan B – Garbine’s power kept her off balance all match long –
