Did you see what Alize Cornet Did?

It’s been a while since tennis had a bad girl.  But Alize Cornet won the honor of “Queen of mean” yesterday with her calculated trickery at Roland Garros in a second round clash with Tatjana Maria. Stall tactics, cramping, medical timeouts, massages on changeovers were utilized by Cornet to beat Maria of Germany 63 67 64. Like a lot of curious cramps in professional tennis, Cornet’s cramps happened AFTER the point but never during. Isn’t it funny how most cramps strike so conveniently like that? But that’s another story for another day – perhaps better suited for the Lee Strasburg Acting Institute web site. Cornet finally won the match 6-4 in the third and then fell to the clay like she won Roland Garros.

After allegedly cheating the German woman out of fair play, Cornet wouldn’t even respect her with a customary handshake. Nope. Finally the drama queen got up after being overcome by her triumphant emotions and THEN decided to go over to the opposite chair and shake hands with Tatjana who gave her a mean scowl and a finger point to the face. Cornet didn’t care though as she was elated with joy having got the ill-gotten win and the next round date against Venus.

One former WTA pro was quite displeased with the shenanigans by Cornet:  “It was plain and simple illegal. On time violations, she would have been given a point, game and match over!!! Simple as that. She technically lost. Tatjana Maria got robbed... Lindsay Davenport just said (they repeated it just now), that Cornet got a massage on her legs on EVERY changeover since the end (or middle?) of the second set?! She also said that is unheard of. Plain and simple cheating in the highest form… Tatjana is getting great publicity, and Cornet is absolutely disgraced by the worldwide press!.. Cornet personally attacked Tatjana. I heard the pressers, did you? It is also a personal attack to cheat, and then turn around and say your opponent was not doing ‘fair play’. This girl is being shredded by the worldwide media. And so will I, whether you like it or not.”  According to reports, after the match, when Cornet and Maria exchanged words, the Frenchwoman accused Maria of being unfair for asking the umpire to give Cornet warnings as she repeatedly took treatment.  Maria replied:  “Afterward she’s telling me I’m not fair play? I don’t know where this girl is, in which world?”…

Nothing like a good drama to spice up a great tournament and Cornet has delivered with this epic sideshow. Now it will be very interesting to see if Cornet tries to pull another fast one on Venus Williams and if or how Venus handles such a potentially volatile situation.

I think it was wrong but controversy like this is good for tennis – we talk about tennis lacking villainous or Kyrgios like firestarters and now we have one in Alize Cornet –

Does anyone has video where I can see that handshake – end of the match?
    Thanks.

She is a troublemaker and very very emotional on the court – recall she had a very dramatic emotional match somewhere indoors with Flipkens.

I’ve never liked Cornet. I don’t like her nose. She’s so snooty. And what she did, getting massages at every changeover and just acting like a French patrician was wrong (also I have the hots for Tatjana Maria). But I guess if the chair umpire let her get away with it a player’s going to take it for all she can get.

Cornet’s “theatrical” performance was disgraceful, and magnified by the equally disgraceful behavior of the crowd. Seems like some of the French feel the same way, too — a number of online French comments expressed dismay at Cornet’s antics. If they can allow that, why not let me stand inside the service line when I’m starting my serve? Heck, I should just go all Tonya Harding on every opponent. Rules, schmules. Winning is everything, right? What is this, Davis Cup 1972 in Romania (and the infamous Romanian fanboys, excuse me, linesmen)?

Llodra said today she is considering legal action against Cornet and Roland Garros – interesting – I didn’t see the match (just highlights) and I do confess the overall match could have been a lot more disturbing than from my incomplete perspective –

Llodra, how’d he get involved in this situation?
