Delpo Agrees Fed Could Be Playing His Best Ever Now

Juan Martin Del Potro entered the media room after his 63 64 defeat to Roger Federer in yesterday’s Miami Open third round clash of titans but no English speaking reporter requested the microphone so the ATP rep suddenly pointed to me to ask the first one. I guess she likes my press conference questions so here is what I asked Juan…

Is this the best Roger has ever played? Federer’s backhand actually broke down the Nadal forehand in Indian Wells. We had never seen that. Some so-called experts are saying Federer could be at his very best right now. Do you agree with that?

Del Potro replied, “Yeah, he always has a good backhand. But at the moment even better because he is moving so fast so that backhand and his legs are moving faster than years ago. I think that is the key of his improvement with the backhand.”

Del Potro then discussed the difference of Roger’s level now and hus level the last time they played three years ago.

“He always play good tennis. He’s the best of the history. I think today he played better than me. He played solid in the important moments. He’s the guy winning the big events of the season and I wish all the best to him. Would be great if we see him in the top positions again.” by Scoop Malinowski

Del Potro would know. I think its very possible Fed at 35 is moving his fastest ever. In my late 30s many people remarked how fast i ran on court. Even in my 40s i still felt as fast as ever. Even two days ago i hit in Key Biscayne with a local teaching pro and he said “you move like a cheetah.” and Roger is faster and fitter than me. I can see Fed still playing top five tennis into his forties.

I hope you are right about Fed playing top 5 tennis into his forties. They must have a tutor for their daughters so school won’t be a problem because Fed definitely wants his family with him.

I think we’re beyond whether he’s the greatest of all time. We are getting to the point where we can at least discuss whether he’s the greatest athlete of all time.

    Scoop,
Congratulations for being chosen to attend the press meet and ask these questions to Del Potro!

Great question and good answer from DP. I have come to understand not all teaching pros are that tennis savvy actually. Some don’t even see the improvements that Fed has made to his backhand. I have a theory on how he was able to make all these improvements at this stage of this career.

    Anyway, nice job Scoop!

    Cheers,
    Gans

Excellent point Chazz. Nobody personifies the essence of a champion better than Federer.

Thanks Gans! Wish you would have revealed your theory though! Missed your observations the last year. Welcome back friend.

Phenomenal footwork helps 🙂 speed is a weapon, footwork is too.

Speed kills. Im not surprised by Feds speed. I actually felt my absolute quickest at 38. Gene Scott and I played and he said I was as fast as Rosewall and Laver but they could do more with the ball when they got to those tough gets. Federer is a far better athlete than I. So dare I say his quickest days are yet to come? Anything is possible with Mr RF.
