Courier Says Agassi Secretly Collected Inside Info of Opponents

agassiJim Courier shared an interesting anecdote on the Tennis Channel last week revealing that his arch-rival Andre Agassi employed a most ingenious method of collecting inside information about his opponents. Agassi would ask top ATP players if they would be so kind and generous to donate one of their racquets to his charity foundation. The racquets would later be auctioned off and the profits earmarked to help the kids. But Courier said before the auctioning process Agassi would take the racquets home and he would practice with them and gain valuable information about the equipment technology and specs. Courier did not divulge how he gained knowledge about Agassi’s undercover technological warfare.

I heard this before. Smart move by Andre. That’s how he beat the jeepers out of Connors.

Hmm … that seems to be more in the realm of “industrial intelligence” in business. Interesting that Agassi did that; a bit sly, perhaps, but Andre was well within his rights. (To be clear, I personally think of that tactic as one step above abusing legal breaks on the tennis court, but since there is no rule about that …)

Players can be so so sensitive about their racquets. A stringer told me Arnaud Clement told him repeatedly not to touch the grip while doing string job. Certain players are extremely protective of their weapons.
