Super Serena Subdues Spirited Challenge By Safarova, Wins French Open

Serena[1]

Serena Williams overcame a tremendous rally by Lucie Safarova, to win her third French Open, 20th major title, and third career Grand Slam.

from a set and 4-1 up, Safarova somehow managed to raise her level, with fierce baseline striking, which stunned Serena. Clearly flustered, double faulted twice to give away two service games, three in all in the second. To a second set tiebreak it went and it was Safarova, in her first major final, who came up with the shots and won the tiebreak 7-2.

Safarova continued to roll in the second set, breaking Serena again from 0-30 down and then holding for 2-0. That’s when Serena said enough was enough and raised her intensity to the maximum level. Walking around the court in a trance-like focus and screaming at herself after hitting winners, including close to a dozen F bombs, Serena effectively summoned her inner beast. Safarova, like all the other players of the last two decades, could not match Serena’s highest intensity level, and was conquered easily. Serena won six straight games to win the final set 6-2.

After the match Serena said she was choking but it looked more like Safarova, now 0-9 career vs. Serena, amazingly escaped her stranglehold, with perhaps the best tennis she’s ever played. But Serena, the experienced and physically and emotionally explosive champion that she is, managed to weather the storm and reapply the stranglehold which killed off the courageous challenger from Czech Republic.

Super Serena’s dominance appears as strong as ever, and 25 total majors seems a very attainable goal for the greatest female tennis player in history.

Cool to see like minded people and realize no one gives a crap about wonens tennis. No comments on a Major final.

Game is boring and sixteen years later Williams still makes these girls all quake at the sight of her late in a match

It’s interesting Harold, a lot of talk about the Stan-Djok final at my courts, but nothing, nary a peep about Serena beating Safarova. Serena may be the GOAT but she is not much of a crowdpleaser … but then again which womens champ can be considered a great entertaining crowdpleaser? Martina? No. Evert? Kinda boring actually, she was so focused and unemotional on court. Graf? She had a nice aesthetic game but a boring personality. Seles? She was fun to watch, pure violence, power tennis. Hingis? Yes because she was so young and not afraid to speak her mind. Davenport? Awesome baseline game but not much charisma. Henin? Fiery and that wondrous backhand. Capriati? She was America’s girl and her comeback story was one of the great dramas in WTA history. Venus? Such an amazing story, showed such joy on the court. Amazing athleticism. Sabatini/Kournikova? The beauty factor. Not sure if women’s tennis has ever had a star who captivated and intrigued like Fed Rafa Mac Borg Agassi etc. Serena is fascinating because of her longevity, power, and her incredible desire and intensity which I rate as actually higher than any male player, even young Hewitt and Rafa.
