Just a quick observation about Djokovic beating Murray in London today

Murray at the end, 4-4 in the third set, looked more stressed, as if he knew he had to do something big, something extra, to win. He seemed to feel he was mental underdog. Djokovic kept his cool and total focus on the task and got the job done. Djokovic has some kind of edge on Murray mentally and it showed again today. Great match between the two best players in the world – mark my words Murray and Djokovic will be #1 and #2 in 2013, not necessarily in that order.

They may be #1 and #2 in 2013, but will either win London? Federer still will have a word about that. Surprisingly, no one else, Del Po, Tsonga, Berd-man seems to be able to step up.

Truly amazing what Fed can do when he’s not spending 3 hours at night in meetings on behalf of the player’s council. 🙂

Interesting that he’s on the player council making political decisions. What Federer wants Federer is usually going to get.

I’m assuming he’s subtle and smooth in his council dealings just like he his on court. Apparently he’s for more money for early round players.

I wonder if the other top guys are involved anymore.

Could he walk away with three trophies here? The Edberg, Fan Fav and the WTF? WTF?

Steve I have heard from reliable sources the ATP players are not happy at all with the 50-50 split of $ at majors. Wonder if Federer would have the cojones to take on that controversial issue.

  • Steve · November 8, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I’m sure he’s addressing this issue but he’s just not gonna to do so in a hasty way.

Scoop what do you think of the prize money system in place?

Should the mostly empty stadiums/venues for many matches mean anything? Is about sponsors & TV rights?
What would be a fair yearly wage for the 200th ranked player in the world to be earning without doubles play?

  • Scoop Malinowski · November 8, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Steve; I think it’s fair and it’s been accepted by all sides. If attendance, TV ratings and sponsorship diminish then so will prize money accordingly. I do think maybe doubles prize money should be cut because no one is buying tickets to see Horia Tecau or Robert Lindstedt or Jon Marray. The doubles are unquestionably piggybacking off the singles. Also, the women do not deserve equal prize money to men in the majors. This needs to be changed somehow, I fully agree with Simon and Tipsarevic and the rest of the mens players who have not spoken out publicly about this yet. I think a 60-40 split would be more fair.

Interesting. How great is it when Rafa plays doubles with Mark Lopez. That sells some tickets.

Not sure Steve. I remember in Miami last year Djok and Murray played doubles together and they played it on an outer court which was quite full. Though this year Nadal played doubles with I think Granollers and they held it in the stadium. Maybe you are right, if Fed or Rafa play doubles it will sell tickets. But it seems most people pay to see singles and accept the doubles as like a bonus.

Mark Lopez was beating Isner ground stroke exchanges in the Indian Wells doubles finals. He must raise his game to new levels when playing with Nadal and it’s great to see. It’s amazing how much Lopez has improved in the last two years as a doubles player.

Wonder why Lopez can’t do anything in singles, maybe he lacks th ephysicality to cover the whole court. He looks really capable in doubles.
