Indian Wells Chatter

DSC_8457[1]

Wow, Taylor Harry Fritz just decimated Dudi Sela 63 60. Ouch for Dudi, to lose to a teenager in his first ATP event. Or should we now officially anoint this kid as ‘the one’?

Rajeev Ram beat Trungelitti.

Poor Delpo is out again.

Tommy Haas withdrew but will return at the Miami Open after long layoff because of right shoulder woes.

Mardy Fish is back after over a year off from tennis and a foray into professional golf. He’s been hitting with Grigor Dimitrov at UCLA so if he’s holding his own with Super G, one could easily see Fish back in the top 50 again.

Federer vs. Dimitrov right now at Madison Square Garden before a packed house in NYC.

Michelle Larcher De Brito, struggled this year, but is one match from qualifying for the main draw, her first main draw of a big tourney in quite some time. Cmon Michelle.

Mike Russell vs. young Alexander Zverev is an interesting quali match between youth vs. experience.

What are the odds on a Federer vs. Djokovic and Maria vs. Serena finals? I’d say under even money.

Will Gulbis win a match this year?

Your two cents?…

    Hello Scoop,

it’s a pleasure to browse this site and read the views of some knowledgeable tennis enthusiasts. What do you make of Mary Pierce and Yevgeny Kafelnikov being once again snubbed for the Tennis Hall of Fame?

Well done by Fritz. What a name to chant, isn’t it?

Federer has a very kind draw, but we’ve said that all too often in recent years. Kyrgios – Dimitrov is the standout Rd. 2 match for me. Really looking forward to this.

I have never heard of Taylor Fritz, but as a 17-year old beating a solid player like Dudi Sela 3 and 0 is impressive. Taylor also beat Kozlov and Novikov a couple months ago. He is worth watching..

    Fish vs. Harrison 😉

Gulbis draw for the first matches looks good on paper, but that doesn’t mean a lot with his current form.

It will also be interesting to see how the “comeback” players like Fish, Cilic, Kyrgios & Sock will play.

Novikov also had a big win in qualies yesterday. Fritz beating Sela is astonishing by that scoreline. But I know Sela hasn’t been feeling well since Memphis/Delray when he got a bad case of flu, his fitness coach Isaac told me this.

Scoop the big name out here as I get ready to drive out to desert from LA tonight is McKenzie McDonald, the UCLA player. Nowadays even as the Bruins play big match vs USC on Saturday,, top college players play pro events during the season. Mac Mac beat Dustov in first round of qualis.

But Gulbis has maybe the lowest confidence level of any player in top 200 – he hasn’t won a match since last October. I believe he will play a qualifier in first match, that’s a tough draw because the qualifier has won 3 matches to make the main draw. Tough times for Gulbis. There are so many intriguing angles about this tournament Loreley.

Qualifiers have to win only two matches to qualify for events like IW. There are not a lot good players in the draw. Coric might be the most dangerous there. So maybe it will be Groth for Gulbis. He can be tricky like any servebot. Tough times for sure.

Read that Gulbis and Thiem hit with other partners yesterday. Could it be they are going in different directions? The union of Gulbis and Thiem obviously was helping one player more than the other.

A trip down memory lane from the spring hard court season what seems like many moons ago

    @Scoop

It’s even more mysterious. Bresnik wasn’t seen at Gulbis’ practises at all so far & Gulbis had a lot of practise sessions since he arrived in IW. But Bresnik was seen with Thiem.

  • Scoop Malinowski · March 12, 2015 at 4:47 pm

Loreley, it makes sense if Gulbis decided to break away from Thiem and Bresnik. Clearly, the system is not working for him anymore. It’s time for change. All good things must come to an end.

  • Bryan · March 14, 2015 at 4:01 pm

Bummed Delpo and Tommy Haas withdrew, they’re among my faves. I’m pulling for Gulbis, Jerzy and Isner as always.

Been out of the loop so far due to a screwed up work schedule and only saw Serena and a couple other matches so far. It’ll change today, watching all the matches I can.

  • Bryan · March 14, 2015 at 4:04 pm

“makes sense if Gulbis decided to break away from Thiem and Bresnik. Clearly, the system is not working for him anymore. It’s time for change.”

Cosign Scoop. This losing streak has reached a dire situation. If he doesn’t go deep at IW he’d better make changes ASAP.

  • Scoop Malinowski · March 14, 2015 at 4:43 pm

Bryan, Delpo is in doubles w Cilic. Haas to play Miami, that’s the plan.

  • Scoop Malinowski · March 14, 2015 at 4:44 pm

Gulbis in doubles also, can’t recall ever seeing him in a doubles draw. So he’s making changes already. Good idea.
