Marion Bartoli’s Latest Eccentric Training Concept

Marion Bartoli and her father/coach Walter think outside the box. Some might say FAR outside the box.

Her training techniques have been called “unorthodox” by court observers in the past, but now the Bartoli’s have taken unconventional to a new level.

Bartoli was seen on court 11 on Saturday playing shadow tennis and hitting balls while strapped up in those rubber bands to her feet and wrists. As well, Bartoli was wearing weights around her ankles and waist. The scene recalls Muhammad Ali jogging in boots and sparring five minute rounds with 20-ounce gloves.

The rubber bands the Bartoli’s were using were then originated at her father’s ankles and then harnessed on Marion. The result was a brilliant concoction of resistance training in a most extreme and ingenious manner.

I remember seeing Tim Witherspoon and other boxers chopping wood and Evander Holyfield throwing punches and combinations in the gym while harnessed to resistance contraptions but this new method by the Bartoli’s takes the cake for creativity. Tennis training techniques sure have come a long way from the Don Budge and Rod Laver eras, hasn’t it?

Bartoli’s form looked excellent despite all the weight and resistance handicaps. I gather that once she is freed from this apparatus, she will blossom to play some outstanding tennis in New York…and maybe even win the tournament.

Keep your eyes on Bartoli in New York.
