Healthy Snacks for Tennis Players

larabar

If you’re a competitive tennis player you need to monitor what you eat and how much you eat. Playing a match at full strength and perfect health is hard enough as it is, if you’re not feeling well or have a bloated stomach, it will affect or ruin your performance.

Bjorn Borg, even at the height of his career, when he could play ten sets a day, measured his meals by scale. If I remember correctly he would only eat about 7 ounces per meal. Borg’s discipline indicates how important diet and nutrition are related to playing your optimum level of tennis.

Of course it’s hard to skip or limit our favorite meals and soft drinks or cold beverages. And it’s very hard to skip junk foods and snacks.

In my 20 years of competitive tennis I want to share some of the best healthy snacks, outside of fresh raw fruits…

Fage yogurt – easy to digest, strong protein source, tastes great too.

Skinny Pop popcorn – light yet tasty, doesn’t leave you with stomach pain. Comes in three flavors – regular, pepper and light cheddar cheese.

All natural peanut butter – high protein – 2 tablespoons has eight grams of protein. Tastes great especially mixed with raspberry or strawberry preserves.

LARABAR – my favorite nutrition bar. “The original fruit and nut food bar.” A bit sweet but so tasty, Lemon is my favorite, Apple and Blueberry are also very good. Actually every flavor is very good. Lemon bar has 6 grams of protein and 22 grams of sugar.

Shawnee’s Greenthumb Popcorn – Tasty popcorn with five grams of protein with such nutritionally potent ingredients as Spirulina, nutritional yeast and cayenne. Gluten free and no GMOs. You can get this popcorn at Whole Foods for around $4.

Clif BUILDERS 20g protein bar – my favorite is the vanilla/almond.

Interesting your list of snacks is almost identical to mine Sccop. I have a box of Builders Bars and Larabars right now. Peanut butter on celery sticks — a healthy low carb, high protein snack — is also key. I would add trail mix and coconut water. Sometimes you need to hydrate with more than regular water.

Bryan, I hope we can link up next year at Indian Wells like you suggested earlier. Be nice to hit some balls on the courts on the desert. Gotta try that Coconut water, hear it’s very good for tennis players. Gatorade diluted with water tends to bloat my stomach but it tastes good.
