Halepmania Inspiring Simona at Miami Open

miamiopen
Simona Halep is becoming a sensation. I spoke with a Romanian journalist named Gabriel Morariu, the only one here covering her and he shared some interesting facts about the WTA World No. 3 ranked player.

Halep has admitted that the only way she can become number one in the world is when Serena retires. Her primary goal is not to be number one in the world but to win her first major.

Halep has attracted a lot of fans here in Miami and many of them have traveled from great distances to support her here in Key Biscayne. The Romanian journalist did an interview with fans in the crowd after last night’s match win vs. Flavia Pennetta and learned some have even come from as far away as Detroit, Seattle and Chicago, just to support Simona here.

Interestingly, as he was interviewing the fans in the crowd last night, he missed the post match press conference with Halep. The WTA rep saw him after and asked with curiosity why he wasn’t there? He explained that he simply mistimed it and needed to do that feature interviewing fans in the audience.

So he asked if it would be possible to still interview Simona for Romania TV. She could have easily rejected the second chance, and more work for herself, but she agreed to, which was most convenient for the bosses and tennis fans back in Romania.

Halep is enjoying tremendous support from her Romanian fans, who are a small contingent but they are very vocal, very animated and they dress in the Romanian colors or yellow, red and blue.

Though the Romanian fans are not quite as impactful as the singing and flag waving Chilean supporters of Marcelo Rios back in the late 90s, or the raucous Brazilian, Argentine or Colombian fans which decorate the Miami Open every year, they are no less impressive or memorable.

Halepmania is a growing movement and Simona Halep is clearly thriving from its positive influence.

“Everywhere I go I have many Romanians supporting me,” Halep said after he win vs. Camila Giorgi on Sunday. “I can say it’s amazing, because, you know, I can hear my name on court. So it’s really nice to hear that. Gives me more power and more, you know, power to fight and to win a match. So it helps me a lot, and I just want to thank them for coming. I’m waiting for them next round, as well.”

I think Halep’s success in the last four years has completely overshadowed that moment of her career. Nobody talks about it anymore. Except for a few hooligan type fans 🙂 Halep’s tennis has been a thrill to watch.

Halep vs Serena was the best game of the year. Amazing! There were all kinds of nations cheering for Simona not only Romanians. She was the underdog.

Steve, several people have said the same thing, this was the match of the year. Let’s hope Halep rethinks her previous statement that the only way to be Number One is when Serena retires. That’s the wrong mindset, Simona can be the best, she can take down Serena, if she really wants it and believes. IMO.
