Netherlands TennisI was at the Djokovic vs Lamonf match US Open semifinal yesterday in Section 122 for the first point to the last and the heavy criticism of the Frenchman's effort are extremely unwarranted in my opinion - Gael got off to a bad start and it just snowballed - He came into the match on a career best surge but quickly fell behind Djokovic - Djokovic was playing perfect tennis and he Gael just couldn't do anything about it - Suddenly down two sets to the same guy he has an 0-12 record against caused Gael to feel extreme frustration and anguish - The worst feeling in tennis (and boxing) is to be in a fight you know you can't win - Archie moore said that about his fight against Cassius Clay Continue to read full article...

Thursday at the Open

unnamedI arrive on the scene with eleven Facing McEnroe books to deliver to the US Open bookstore and media. John and Patrick McEnroe are just finished playing on old grandstand, as they beat Jimmy Arias and Henri Leconte in front of a pretty big crowd. Kenneth Raisma of Estonia is playing Riccardo Balzerani of Italy on court 14 and a junior boy is watching from a bleacher. I ask him if he's scouting to play the winner and he replies that if he wins he will play the winner. He's a really laid back friendly kid who points out the clock which runs twenty seconds on each point to make sure the server does not stall. It turns out the kid is the number one junior in the world Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. Continue to read full article...

DjokartNovak Djokovic and Gael Monfils played each other for the first time as professionals at the 2005 US Open on an outer court, I believe it was court 8 or 9. It was a late afternoon match in the hot sun which extended the five set distance. Djokovic was still largely unknown at age 18 while Monfils was a top rated ITF junior at 19. Djokovic lead 75 46 76 before being bageled in the fourth set. I arrived at the match in the fifth set just in time to witness the drama. The match was on serve in the fifth at 3-3 if I recall correctly and then Djokovic appeared to suffer from the heat. After a long rally which Monfils won, Djokovic collapsed on the court near the service line. He was basically given a long timeout by the chair umpire and received medical attention. Dissecting Rafa’s Loss To Pouille

rafanaIt was another heartbreaking loss for Rafael Nadal - for the second year in a row he lost an epic five setter - last year to Fabio Fognini and last night to Lucas Pouille - Rafa still looks great and his fighting spirit hasn't waned a fraction but there is a difference now - There is a difference because Nadal used to win these matches and in the last two or three years he is losing these battles - The difference in my opinion is that the other players are better now and they are getting better and better while Nadal is still the same player who is not improving anymore and compounding his troubles Rafa could be losing that quarter step or even half step to certain regions of the court Continue to read full article...
