Turning it around

mail.google.comSteve Johnson started the year off with a very disappointing 6-14 record - stumbling after a career high ranking finish to close out 2015. The most devastating shattering loss was in the second round at Delray in February blowing a set and two break lead to Benni Becker to lose in three sets. A down and probably depressed Johnson staggered through a very poor and frustrating stretch until June when suddenly he regained his groove on grass at Nottingham where he won his maiden ATP singles title defeating Pospisal Anderson Seppi and Pablo Cuevas in the final - all in close tough hard-earned matches. Up in Newport Dan and I were in the press center and Dan said "Scoop you have to see this photo of McEnroe it's the best photo I've ever seen."
Facing McEnroe Book's photo. Instantly I agreed it was a fantastic photo - the photo credit was by June Harrison who I contacted over the weekend (to ask to be able to use for 'Facing McEnroe" book cover) and she responded with a very nice reply:  "That image will be in my book for sure.  It’s called AMERICAN CHAMPION." Young Vanquishes Kozlov

newportA very intense Donald Young had too much firepower and fury today for Stefan Kozlov winning their second round clash 60 64 from a break down in the second. Dressed in all white Boast attire and black socks Young came out looking like a raging Nadal bull pounding winners all over the court. Kozlov was overwhelmed but saved two set points in the first game of the second set by pushing forward to the net and converting two very nice volley winners. Continue to read full article...

Newport Day Two

Scoop Malinowski's photo.
Stefan Kozlov looked incredible today in totally outclassing (6162) veteran Benjamin Becker who is known as fine grass court player. Kozlov was sensational in every aspect of his arsenal and Dan even stated during the blowout win that Kozlov has not only the potential to win Newport in the future but also Wimbledon. Yes Dan actually said that and you know what? He's right - Kozlov was spectacular today with his grass court tennis variety and especially big serving earning a stunning abundance of free points via aces and unreturnables. Day One At Newport

newportThere are two structural changes to the eye-arresting beauty of this wonderful haven called the Newport Hall of Fame. A new bleacher for the center court and a clubhouse building on the opposite side of the grounds. But the changes blend perfectly and the venue still has the old style feel which is so alluring. The first action I see is Dancevic vs Weintraub with Dancevic up a set and two-love. Then they engage in a long third with plenty of deuces which is eventually won by the Israeli who appears to wallop the ball a little harder than the Canadien who has the superior serve. Raonic is frozen in final vs Andy

No fire no emotion – just stoic robotic Raonic – he’s down a set and on serve in the second and just saved break point and closed out a very tough service game for 5-4 but expressed nothing despite playing two excellent points – a slam at net and a big serve winner – it […] Continue to read full article...

Will Querrey be the Spark which Ignites US Tennis?

AEGON Championships - Day FiveThe Sam Querrey upset of ATP World no 1 and defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic last week sent major shockwaves through the tennis universe. It was arguably the biggest surprise upset in the history of Grand Slam tennis. Querrey had lost first round at Queens to Agut 76 in the third and had recently endured losing first round three events in a row on red clay. Even at his most confident top form Querrey is still the kind of "soft" player that nobody would predict could beat a mighty player like Djokovic. But yet it happened - Querrey did slay the Djokovic Dragon in London Continue to read full article...
