Slaying The Dragon

ivoShock upsets are rare occurrences in the world of pro tennis, where top players seldom surrender a centimeter of their hard-earned territory. In this feature, pro players talk about memories of their major upsets…

Scott Draper: “I played Thomas Muster in Rome. He was the King of Clay, number two in the world, defending champion. And I just went out there, I don’t know, I just had a great day where I committed to what I was trying to do and I beat him in three and a quarter hours. He went to the hospital after the match. It was one of those matches where I played unbelievable.”

What Do You Do If You’re Ernie Gulbis Now?

10408123_321586321384328_5832249443466172693_nYou’re going to turn 28 in a couple of months. You’re ranked no. 61, an uptick after the French Open where you made it to the 4th rd where you beat the highest-ranked player of the year, no. 29 Joao Sousa (you also beat Dr. Ivo, no. 29, in Rome) at the only slam you’ve won a match at in 2016.

Wimbledon begins

wimbThe highpoint of the tennis season is here. It looks like Novak and Andy are on a collision course but you can never count out Roger Federer who is especially hungry and eager right now because this could very well be his last chance to win a major title. There are some fine first round battles – I like the Fritz vs Wawrinka showdown and Karlovic vs Coric and Isner vs Baghdatis as well as Gulbis vs Sock.

safe_imageFrances Tiafoe is only 18, but since he extended world no. 18 (at the time) David Goffin to three sets after beating Taylor Fritz at Indy Wells, Tiafoe has gone 15-9 in mostly Challenger events, and has not won a tournament. He has only beaten two Top 100 players in Donald Young and John Millman. And even more concerning is Tiafoe has not qualified in any of the three slams this year, winning a total of three matches in the three slam qualifying draws and making an early first round qualy exit at Wimbledon this week.

Free Sharapova

ccThe ITF is supposedly considering the appeal of Maria Sharapova of her two year ban for using an illegal performance-enhancing drug and because of her good standing and because it’s a first time violation there is speculation that the ban could be reduced to a retroactive six months. I say stop the persecution of a tennis icon and free Sharapova from the dungeon of being denied her job of playing tennis. It does seem like a witch hunt persecution in my opinion. Roy Jones tested positive for using steroids after his fight with Richard Hall and got nothing but a slap on the wrist -

McEnroe Trying to Stoke Raonic’s Inner-McEnroe

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI’ve been watching Johnny Mac now in his charge’s last two matches, Milos Raonic’s wins against Nick Kyrgios and Jiri Vesely, and I like what I see in Mac’s courtside demeanor. He’s not piping up, just talking quietly to Raonic’s main coach, Ricardo Piatti, who coached Djoko and more recently, Gasquet. But the intensity which made Mac probably the most fiery player ever to play the game, male or female, is ever evident in Mac’s tight-lipped stare and the way he never takes his eye off the court.

12592745_10206883825707426_765858074746143009_nNovak Djokovic just turned 29, an age at which most players are basically through winning slams, and bagged his 12th slam title. The question now is very legitimate, will Nole win more slams than Federer, a seemingly-Joe Dimaggio like hitting in consecutive game (56 games straight that’s been in the books now without being broken for 75 years) record, since Federer has 17 now, a record he’s only held for seven years.

Ashleigh Barty is back!

Barty WM13-001 (9461732276).jpgAshleigh Barty was apparently done with tennis in September 2014 when she quit the sport and started to play cricket.   It was an astonishing move because the talented Australian lefty  was just eighteen at the time and already a three-time grand slam doubles finalist (with partner Casey Dellaqua).  Suddenly and shockingly, Ashleigh’s tennis career was turned to ashes before it even really got going.

The Enigma Named Sam Querrey

I looked up yesterday and Sam “QBall” Querrey was 28. I said, “That can’t be!” I remember Qball when he was 18 playing the Forest Hills Challenger having a pizza delivered to him in the swanky Forest Hills bar/cafe. Actually, I remember further back to the year before when I saw the acne-laced Qball playing […]
