Biofile: Michael Russell Interview

P1011200 Mike Russell is retiring at this year's US Open where he will play doubles with Donald Young - here is a farewell Biofile I recently did with the long lasting veteran grinder, who once had match point on eventual champion Gustavo Kuerten at the French Open -- Greatest Career Moment: "Playing all four stadium courts in all four grand slams is pretty special. Fourth round at the French Open was quite amazing, 2001. And reaching semifinals of three different surfaces - grass, indoor, and clay - and especially in my hometown tournament of Houston was special as well." Continue to read full article...

Tommy Paulmania at US Open Qualies Friday

tpaul2 Tommy Paul was sensational today, just dominating Fed friend since teenage years Marco Chiudenelli on court seventeen, with Reilly Opelka, Jay Berger, Jose Higueras and Dan said Mardy Fish in the house. I spoke with Chiudinelli's coach Jan Vacek after and he said he was surprised more how poorly Marco played, but also credited Paul's forehand and his overall game, adding his serve can be improved, most of all Vacek, a former ATP player, likes Paul's demeanor on court and his attitude which he said is great but also humble. He doesn't like the younger players who think they know everything even thought they are still teenagers. Continue to read full article...

Thursday US Open Qualies, Tommy Paul Stars

unnamed First time seeing Tommy Paul play live and I was very impressed. He comes out to court seventeen looking like a California surfer, parks his stuff and even applies the sunblock onto just his nose, like a surfer. But boy can he belt the ball, he has long arms and good athleticism and he plays, believe it or not, like Monfils, but with less showmanship, but the physicality is Monfils like. But Paul understates the showing of emotion, when he wins big points he mouths two or three come ons silently to himself and his box (which included Higueras and Berger), he makes quiet fistpumps and he smiles gently after a miss or a silly miss and he shows the correct swing to his box, like if he hits to flat to the net, he shows them a loop swing. Wednesday at US Open Qualies

11908216_10152909583097693_1680693507_n I arrive to Stefan Kozlov vs Geno Andreozzo on serve at 2-1 in the first set, it's the first match on at 11 on court seventeen. Andreozzi is a tough Argentine who beat Harrison at Wimbledon qualies, so I don't want to sit next to poppa Andrei Kozlov because the last match I sat with him I did not bring good luck - Stefan lost first round to a hard-hitting Russian at the Sarasota Challenger this year. 11070260_926583784061140_7229436411336171210_n Locked in at 20-20 in head to head meetings, every single battle they compete is just an awe inspiring experience to witness, how much each combatant has to lay on the line to win produces the greatest tennis we've been privileged to see. Probing, punching, pounding, pummeling, pranking, poking, provoking, we see it all and then some more in a Federer vs Djokovic clash of titans. Continue to read full article...

bbencic In an unbelievably impressive performance on all levels, Belinda Bencic conquered the queen of tennis Serena Williams in the Rogers Cup semifinal 36 75 64. The score may look like Serena was a little off her top form, but after watching the third set I'd give all the credit in the world to Bencic for an amazing display of tennis that will absolutely send massive shockwaves through the WTA and the tennis realm. The Outrageous Vilification of Nick Kyrgios

1606870_1382968971973163_303268550_n Nick Kyrgios mumbled an insult about Stan Wawrinka during a heated battle in Montreal on Wednesday evening, not long after Wawrinka targeted a beanball shot right at Nick's head. So now the ATP has fined Kyrgios $10,000 with rumblings that additional punishment may be meted out - to the tune of a fine ten times more along with a three year suspension. Examples of incidents of violence in pro tennis

2908-212048 With the Kyrgios-Wawrinka near brawl in Montreal the talk of tennis today, I decided to collect memories and examples of violence and near violence in the sport of tennis... Perhaps the most memorable incident in pro tennis was when Roger Taylor punched out Bob Hewitt in the locker room, an overflow from flared tempers after a doubles match they played. But there are more... Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic had a physical confrontation after their 2008 US Open quarterfinal match, inside the locker room. Continue to read full article...
