photo (1) Some big events in Asia in Tokyo and Beijing, the return of Rafa Nadal, but I'm most intrigued by the first round match up at the Sacramento Challenger today between wildcard sixteen year old Stefan Kozlov vs. struggling American Ryan Harrison. Continue to read full article...

Dissect the Harrison forehand

1903-104414 This photo is from March at the Sony Open practice courts, Harrison is hitting with Klahn, they are playing baseline games. I recall Klahn was clearly besting Harrison with his depth and penetration. This photo seems to show some flaws in the Harrison forehand. Continue to read full article...

This Week In Tennis

0607-113437 France opts for red clay for the Davis Cup final vs. Switzerland. With Fed and Stan both to play at the indoor ATP World Tour Finals, you have to wonder if both players will give a full effort - or even pullout, given how important this Davis Cup final is for both Federer and Stan. I remember the year Spain beat Argentina in the Davis Cup finals in Argentina, how Nalbandian criticized Del Potro for participating in the WTF in Asia which he felt adversely affected Delpo's fitness and energy levels for the final, which was won by Spain on a fast indoor surface. “I didn’t play my game, I played your game”

scoopten2 We had a USTA tournament this weekend, park teams meeting two other park teams at Van Saun Park, NJ. It was a lot of fun, we did doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles and singles. Just like a Davis Cup WTT format. Our captain told us it would be a bunch of 3.5s and 4s and that it would be light and for fun with free food, and a chance to meet new players. I agreed mainly because the event was held at a beautiful county park I played my first leagues at over a decade ago. Continue to read full article...

Facing Hewitt book interview

2406-095016 An interview I did with an Australian media outlet about my latest tennis book "Facing Hewitt"... Question: What inspired you to do a book about Lleyton Hewitt? It started out as a magazine feature idea that was eventually published in the Australian Open program in January. The feature was well received and I decided to develop it further into a book. Question: Was it a challenge to get interviews with ATP players and were they willing to discuss their matches and experiences with Hewitt? Continue to read full article...

The String Master By Dan Arnold index Today we are going to talk about Hybrid stringing. Many players wonder what type of string they should be using in their rackets. With so many choices it could be overwhelming to choose what is best for your game. For many players 4.0 level and above, a hybrid set up is a good call. This is a combination usually of a polyester main string and a multifilament cross string. Continue to read full article...

P1011200 While there were plenty of surprises at the 2014 U.S. Open, the final TV ratings statistics were certainly not one. CBS televised it's final US Open after 47 years of coverage and Marin Cilic vs. Kei Nishikori will go down as one of the lowest rated finals in history. Lacking marquee names in a final that began at 5 p.m. EDT on a Monday afternoon (that's 3 p.m. on the west coast), it is hardly a shock that the Croatian Cilic’s straight-sets victory against the Japanese attracted just a 1.9 overnight rating, down 32 percent from Rafael Nadal’s win over Novak Djokovic one year ago, according to Sports Business Daily. images By Guillermo Morales-Rubert Recently I had the opportunity to interview Bill Oakes, the Tournament Director for the Winston-Salem Open. Bill is also the Associate Athletic Director of Wake Forest University Tennis commentator Patrick McEnroe was quoted saying the following: “I’ve heard that players just love the Winston-Salem Open because they are so well taken of, and that’s what the players want. The hospitality was really felt when I was there for the Davis Cup. People like Bill Oakes have tennis in their blood, and I know he does a great job”. After spending some time with Bill I concurred with Mr. McEnroe’s assessment. Bill’s passion for tennis and keen ability to accommodate player’s needs has led to his success as a Tournament Director. Therefore, I am certain Bill will be able to attract more quality players to Winston-Salem. The interview provides an inner look to one of eleven professional tournaments at the ATP level in the United States. The Winston-Salem Open is the only professional international event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This is a must see tournament. Continue to read full article...
