Whoa in Washington, Ryan Harrison takes out Hewitt

P8020265 Guess that spinny forehand and mechanical backhand aren't too bad after all. Ryan Harrison defeated former ATP No. l Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets today. After a disappointing first half of the year hampered by repeated difficult draws, Harrison seems to finding his groove now. He made the semis last week in Atlanta, bowing to finalist Kevin Anderson. rioseye "I played a couple matches with him. It's always something different because everybody said he was so talented, he was so gifted. And he had also a unique style of playing. He has very good hands. He used a lot of angles on balls at that time when we played (it) was not seen as often as nowadays because you see players like Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, they use the all court game. But this time all court game and playing angles and spin and taking the opponent out of the position and out of the court was very rare so he was one of the top players." The Journey To The U.S. Open Begins In Atlanta

ashe Atlanta is looking like an interesting tournament. Mardy Fish is back - he'll play Michael Russell and probably Jack Sock in the second round (if Sock can get by Santiago Giraldo). James Blake plays a qualifier. Isner plays wildcard Christian Harrison. Gee, those Harry brothers always seem to draw Big Iz, the # 1 seed. Continue to read full article...

Firsts

[caption id="attachment_8166" align="alignright" width="300"]Hewitt vs. Ebden on center court. Hewitt vs. Ebden on center court.[/caption] In Newport I had the pleasure to sit and chat with former ATP star and Newport champion Vijay Amritraj while he was watching his son and Sam Querrey play doubles on court 3. I remarked to Vijay that he won Newport twice and he corrected me that it was "three times. But who's counting." Continue to read full article...

Is Gulbis Sliding Back To Mediocrity?

Ernests_Gulbis_01 Ernests Gulbis rejuvenated his stagnant career by impressively winning the Delray Beach singles title and twice giving Rafa Nadal life and death matches in the first half of 2013. But after rebuilding his ranking and relevance on the ATP Tour, it appears Gulbis has taken a step backwards this summer. Continue to read full article...

Who Misses Fabrice Santoro? Here’s His Biofile

Hobbies/Interests: "Now I like to spend most of my time with my wife and my daughter because I miss them a lot when I'm on the Tour. And for the rest of the time, I listen to a lot of music, the French music. I have a passion, which is to stay busy. Building a home, trying to build a home in the south of France takes a lot of time." Early Tennis Memory: "McEnroe-Lendl final of the French Open, 1984. Devastation because I remember I was pushing a lot behind John and I remember I was very disappointed after the match. Because I knew it was a big chance for him to win the French (McEnroe led two sets to none before falling, 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5). And I was very, very disappointed." Newport 2013 Photos

P1011095 Brian Baker has been in Newport every day this week working on his return to the ATP tour with coach Todd Martin, who is a touring pro at a local club. Baker has been hitting on the public courts across the street from the Hall of Fame, where the courts are available to any player, on any level on a "first come first serve basis" as Martin told me. Baker is planning on playing next week's Atlanta event, his first tournament since injuring his knee at this year's Australian Open in a match against Sam Querrey. Continue to read full article...

Wednesday In Newport

P1011114 It looks like a rainout at 9 am, it's misty, cloudy, no sign of sun. It looks like one of those days when it will rain all day. But by 11, it totally changes and soon enough it's clear skies and sun. So the tennis is on when I arrive to the courts at 1. ATP #84 Jack Sock is down 1-5 in the third set to Jan Hernych. Hernych barely qualified, edging Bozoljac in three sets after being down a set and a break. He then beat Pavic in the first round. Continue to read full article...

P1011085 I arrive in Newport just in time to watch 15-year-old Stefan Kozlov make his ATP debut via a wildcard. His opponent is the Polish veteran Michal Przysiezny, who once beat Ljubicic at Wimbledon. Kozlov holds his own early, gets to 2-all. He's had to save a few break points, in his second service game he faced three break points and won all of them on second serves. Continue to read full article...
